  1. I have one UV filter which I use on my big male fighters tank. UV filters don't stop disease but they do get rid of green water and free floating parasites etc. They work by the water passing past the UV bulb which radiates the germs and algae and kills them. You are not supposed to put your hands in a tank with the uv steriliser turned on.
  2. Excellent - I couldn't find the thread. Importing - costs an arm and a leg and then they have to survive the quarantine period! Ask you lfs to look at the importers lists and ask them to order one if you like it. They get an updated list regularly of what is coming in. Now when I think about it I may have seen the others on list I looked at about 3 weeks ago.
  3. You will normally get one that grows way faster than the rest (usually a male). The smaller ones are normally the ones that I cull although if you have the space and time you will most likely find that the slower developing ones have the better fins and tails. I have some 6 weeks old that look like 4 months at the moment as well but there were only 15 in the spawn and they have grown up in a 100 litre tank. Bigger spawns tend to grow slower as they have to compete more for food and the smaller slower fry miss out at the start and then have trouble catching up.
  4. If you use something like daltons aquatic mix under the gravel or sand as your substrate you will find the filter clogs faster as when you gravel vac the tank there will be a certain amount disturbed. Your filter is the smallest size for that sized tank as a good base for filtering is a turnover of 4 x the tank per hour so you will probably have to clean it monthly. I have several filters of that size (Aqua Ones but the same filter) and I like them. Depending on your filter media you may not quite manage that as generally the flow rate mentioned is when the filter has no media. Suggestion for plants is to purchase plants that do not break apart easily as this will also clog the filter and the intake. Blue rams as in ramirez like good clean water. The others you have mentioned are not nearly as fussy. Post pictures when you get the tank set up. I love looking at other peoples tanks.
  5. My understanding from what I've read and also seen is that the trouble maker goes along nipping and chasing the other males but when the others get sick of it they all gang up and chase back. Thats how the male gets knocked about. I've got about 50 males in a small 100 litre 4 ft at the moment and have only had to take about 12 out so far. They are about 11 weeks old I think and about 3-4 cm long. I do find the cambodians to be more aggressive than the others, don't know why though.
  6. the ones with the bits missing are the trouble making ones - they are not the ones normally being picked on.
  7. what type is it and what sized tank is it on, whats in the tank - fish? plants? substrate, fertiliser? as they will all affect how long it will go before you need to clean it.
  8. My fx5 goes 6 weeks before needing a clean , the other cannisters I do when I can see they are getting dirty or when the water flow drops and this is any where from 8 weeks to about 4 months. Only rinse out about a 3rd of the media or one basket at a time and do it with tank water or you will kill off all the beneficial bacteria and that means you will most likely get an ammonia spike in your tank.
  9. I don't think HFF has them now but I have seen some around this year. They have like a dark circle on their sides and don't particularly look like fighters (imo anyway). I seem to remember they were called something else.
  10. Father was an imported red vt, mum was bred by me and had a small amount of crowntail in her. Your betta is not pure veiltail otherwise her tail would be smooth on the edges. I would call her veiltail but if I was selling her I would say she had a small amount of ct in her history.
  11. You sound like me - I can never remember what mine are called either.
  12. Aaron, SamH is up here in Auckland.
  13. Jonos correct - some flare and fight when they are very young. I find that cambos tend to be more aggressive as well. Different fish have different temperaments.
  14. I don't know what it is but she's not been inbred, dad was an import. I try not to inbreed my fighters as I find it really stunts their body size.
  15. I go by 1 adult discus per 50 litres. Its better to get adult discus if you are new to keeping them as they are easier to look after, particularly if you have a planted tank. The smaller the discus the more often the water changes and the cleaner the tank needs to be kept. My tank is 450 litres and I have 6 discus plus other smaller fish in it. I do water changes once every 2 -5 days depending on the tank readings but try to do 2 a week of about 50%. There are top quality discus up her in auckland at good prices. Read up on them, its a matter of personal choice which type you get. Some will remain the colour they are when you purchase them, some types like pigeon discus will pepper(get black specs over them) if you have a dark background to your tank or lots of dark areas)>
  16. He was lovely, the problem was out of the two spawns I got there were no males!
  17. Dixon must be on exam leave - he always gets like this when he's got nothing to do or he becomes the forum police too much time....
  18. I can assure you he's crowntail but not sure if you call him a double ray ct or a double double ray. You'll need to wait until discusguru comes on and has a look. He will know for sure. Your boys grandmother was one of his females. here she is This is his grandfather his father and his mother (from the top pairing) As for his colouring I suppose you would call him a platinum butterfly?
  19. forget what I said - I just looked at theres one for $50 on trade & exhange!!!
