  1. looking good so far. keep us updated!
  2. yeah. just catch it with a small, fine net and dump it in the net breeder, which will be hanging on the inside of the tank. the befefit of the net breeder over the betta containers is that there are only small holes in the net breeder so small fish can't be sucked out of it by larger fish
  3. HFF(Mt Roskill). I put him in a small well planted 30L tank with some guppies for mates. All seems to be going so far. I have been feeding frozen bloodworms- he is too small to eat anything else really! I have some frozen brine shrimp of freeze dried tubifex so i'll try those as well
  4. looks good. I keep forgetting to take pics and post up here. broms2 has seen them though
  5. Firstly- Welcome to FNZAS!!! Secondly- what level is this for??? I could recommend a heap of sources but if it is for a NCEA level 3 essay or something they might be a little more info than you need... Simply though- (If you haven't got this far already) 1. Fanning is a form of Parental care in Fish. They fan their eggs to keep fresh water flowing past them, Thus removing detritus and keeping fungus and bacteria from settling on, and destroying the egg. 2. The fish which fans its eggs is more likely to have a greater hatch-rate. It pretty much goes from there 3. ??? I don't get that question. I suppose it is talking about Natural selection. Essentially, with Natural selection, the most "fit" organisms are likely to have more offspring. By fit i am not referring to athleticism, but rather reproductive success. In modern human society, what is happening is that this is being distorted. For example, a Woman of higher intellect is likely to have fewer babies than a women of lower intellect, simply because their professional life gets in the way of their childbearing "potential". There are many more examples of this.
  6. Angels are overated Na seriously though- Many people get Angels when they are starting coz they look cool, then find out later down the track that they will eat their little Neons etc...
  7. Firstly welcome to FNZAS!!!!! While it is right to add more fish to eat the algae (Bristlenoses, Oto's etc) you also need to look at what is causing the algae in the first place- Lighting periods, stocking density, filtration etc- to work out what is causing the Algae- otherwise you will be forever fighting it!
  8. they probably found them in a stream! They are quite hardy and can cope with higher temperatures.
  9. royal gramma's are quite expensive...
  10. brackish tanks are not hard. they don't need skimmers, the only real difference is you chuck a bit of Red Sea salt in and start measuring the Salinity- oh and you need to get rid of your plants- Java fern is pretty much the only freshwater plant that can survive. On another note I heard Albany HFF has a red eye puffer- they are cool- and freshwater. I'm keeping an eye out for another Suvatii myself.

    seahorses

na you don't want one of those. I would recommend a Reef Octopus B100-F Skimmer ~RRP~ $244.90NZD. you don't want a cheap skimmer or you will have more problems down the track
  12. cool. I'll have to look at it now I have a new baby Senegal bichir! (he's only 4cm long!)
  13. you have it in a bottle? I made mine up so it was the right concentration for a 3L Juice bottle. I half filled the bottle with warm RODI water then put the cap on, gave it a really good shake, then filled it to the top. I then took out the 80 mL i needed for my tank that day. Then, each day before dosing the 80 ml I give the bottle a good shake. problem is you need a large water volume to dissolve it because it is only partially soluble. Once you stick it in a high flow area in the sump you will be fine as it will dissolve quickly into the tank water. Make sure you shake daily before dosing otherwise you will be dosing at a very low concentration till you get near the end of the bottle.
  14. try http://celestialpearldanio.com/ for a start

    seahorses

unless you are running a sump you would be better on a 90L tank with seahorses (thus lightly stocked) to get a decent Reef Octopus skimmer or the like... Maybe a AquaC remora
  16. i don't think it would siphon. Wouldn't i just syphon the water above the overflow bar then drain the box? that would equate to only 10L of water or so extra I think.
  17. it would probably gurgle. you could do similar with an external standpipe though and that would work
