  1. OOh I'm 'someone' now!  Yep, Stella I certainly will be raising the idea - it was actually mooted a few meetings ago. We have a few members who like and/or keep natives. Cheers for the reminder.
  2. I've got a big bow front (c300l) with demasoni, yellows, royal blue peacocks and 2 lionheads. The demasoni are so placid! Then there is the old planted tank with keyholes, kribs, saes, harlequins and gbas. Underneath that is a triple breeder (3 tanks?) with a Tanganyikan brichardi colony underway, as well as some bristlenose and an angel pair. Since the work tank started leaking yesterday, I now have added all the fish from there - my small jebo with more angels, and the bns are sharing with platys, a krib and some neons. The angel pair have albino corys in with them too. I do plan on changing the triple breeder for a two footer with the brichardi colony given more space to grow. They have second lot of fry now. Do come round again if you want to talk fish over coffee...
  3. Usually only once a year, but we've been having more lately!
  4. Try living in just 60sqm! My living room has six tanks though! Great looking tank TTK!!! Did you tell Glenn that it was the one he built? If you need any rock, let me know, I have a few spare pieces. I have also used pumice and coral to get higher stacks. I really like those Melanochromis, even if they are hybrids. Beautiful.
  5. Hi and Welcome! I do recommend the Siamese algae eaters - got rid of my black beard algae and have kept several tanks very clean. Hutt Pets do have several types of algae eater, including SAEs. You do have to know which ones are which though, as they have flying foxes and saes in the same tank. Whereabouts in Welly are you? There are three clubs in Welly: Wellington, Upper Hutt and KapiMana. The KapiMana club is meeting this Wednesday night, with an auction. Great fun and lots of bargains to be had. Meeting details can be found in the club section. I will be bringing some Java fern to the auction.
  6. Hey, maybe KMAC could join up on that tank crawl too! :bounce:
  7. That looks awesome!!! I'm so impressed. ..and a little bit jealous  :bounce: :bounce:
  8. Yeah I got them from Glenn who said as much too. I wanted just one species of peacock-like fish to go with my demasoni and yellows ok now and lionheads! I was really happy when the female was holding, but no sign of fry after she spat at 22 days. I really don't want to strip as I like the idea of fish following their natural behaviour. Is there something else I can do to make the tank more fry-friendly?
  9. yeah, that's what I was thinking. At least they are happy and not fighting. Thanks everyone.
  10. Full tank shot - I'm adding a bristlenose next weekend to help with the algae control, and going to rearrange it to make a larger sand area for the peacocks. I was reading an old PFK article by Mary Bailey and hadn't realised that peacocks prefer 'sand with some rocks' to 'basic rock wall' tank structure.
  11. Big one is maybe 10cm and little one 8cm - including tails.
  12. Thanks Afrikan! I'm glad you think they're in good condition - I think they look pretty jolly good. I got the royal blues from Glenn. I can't tell about body shape - but the fish was more blue at one stage. (I really wanted the really blue Sch... fryeri, but will have to wait till I've got a 5 foot tank... one day! )
  13. I'm not a fan of the widows - they pick on each other and other fish in my experience. I have had both glowlights and neons schooling together in the work tank - looked great!
  14. Hi, I have two lionheads (also called lumpheads, humpheads, buffaloheads...) The bigger one is dark blue grey, definite big hump and very secretive. The other: I just wondered if anyone thinks this is also a male? Sub-dominant, definitely, and they hang out in different areas of the tank, but don't fight at all. Opinions?
  15. This is my royal blue: After seeing LivingArt's fish, I'm really not sure what the differences are between the red shoulder and this! He beats up the smaller males and has shifted heaps of sand... maybe his mate will be ready for another go at breeding soon. The last lot of fry didn't survive after spitting. and here are two of the P.demasoni (from Ryan) They are all grown up but still very mild mannered compared with the big peacock. I just love demasoni. My favourite fish! :bounce:
  16. Hiya, I think it's a great idea to get an aviary! Wellington is fine for most birds. Our work aviary is 5m x 2m, with a hut at one end and double-door (escape-proof) at the other. We've got just cockatiels and lovebirds in it. They have been breeding too. Another hint is to mix pine needles in with your bedding, litter or nest boxes. They contain something that deters mites.
  17. Lava rock = Scoria. Pumice has a much better surface area.
  18. I work as a recreation coordinator in a rest home. Yay, I get to do fun stuff with my residents and help them enjoy life. I'd rather be doing the same job but for double the money!
  19. Last night the male was swimming in circles round his open cast pit (you should see the tailings dump at the front of the tank! ) and the female was too. Tonight I get home to see she has a distended throat so i guess she's got eggs in there. I've only had the fish a week and a half! They are Royal Blues. I've got an adult pair and four juveniles - from Glenn. They're in with seven electric yellows, two lionheads and fifteen adorable demasoni. (Ryan they are all doing well and not fighting at all). Once I'm back from my hols next week I'll clean the tank and take photos.

   Ha ha, SW you just won't learn, eh! You could try congo tetras or kribs as dither fish for the lionheads. Or, if you are keeping them in a higher pH, electric yellows. I just got a pair too! :bounce: :bounce: Wonderful fish. Mine are in my big African rift tank, which is now fully stocked. yay.
