  2. Mr Pleco wrote: I think those tails are "swallowtail" types. But I do think they look like finrot!  The show has been great so far and well done the organisers for putting on such a fantastic effort! The "Wainui liquid sun" hasn't stopped people coming in to enjoy the fish. :bounce: See you all tomorrow! :bounce:
  3. Congratulations! I too had a female peacock spit in the bucket on Saturday! I was transferring her to another tank and she spat in the bucket - rather a lot of fry that were much bigger than I'd expected. Close to 1.5cm. Once she was into the small holding tank I found another four fry... Best thing was once the peacocks were out of the main tank, I started seeing both electric yellow and demasoni fry! Ok not many, but it's a start. :bounce:
  4. Welcome back! :bounce: If you're interested, the Upper Hutt fish club meets next week, on Wednesday night. Details are in the clubs section. [This month's meeting will have a discussion on coldwater fish and ponds.] It's a chance to meet with like-minded fish geeks oops I mean people. I can offer you plant cuttings when you are ready for them. cheers, Hellen
  5. So far we have Riccia and Anubias nana. As for the current database, there are only line drawings. So please please get snapping! :bounce:
  6. We have some pics but not enough. So get that camera out girl and go for it!
  7. I think that the "No Cropping" rule is so that the pic is of the highest quality. I think ( not absolutely sure) that if you crop a pic it will reduce the quality down too low for our purposes. The pic must be at least 600x400 pix in size.
  8. Well, it will be useful if we get more plant pics! We can have several pics of each plant, which makes it better for identifying them.
  9. FNZAS is updating the plant database and requires images of plants from our members. Images must meet the following criteria: • Must be taken by the forum member submitting them - not sourced from the internet or taken from books/magazines. • Must show a clear focused image of the plant. • May be images of emersed, submersed growth, or the flowers of the plant. • Should be a minimum of 600 x 400px in size (Photobucket will do this for you when you upload) • Must not be cropped or altered in any way - this will be done before loading into the database. • Images will be watermarked with a FNZAS Logo and copyright will be attributed to the owner. • Please submit the following with your image: Latin Name Type of growth - Emersed/Submersed Copyright - Fishroom name/Real name (will PM the member if this is indicated, do not put this on the forum) • If there is dispute as to the correct naming of the plant, this will be discussed on the thread and the FNZAS Plant committee will be responsible for resolving this. • If the plant is not on this page: http://www.fnzas.org.nz/plant_survey the following information needs to be provided: Latin Name Common Name Origin Temperature range - deg C Ph range Hardness Light requirements - Low, Med, High, Very High Height Propagation method Notes - eg, general description of plant, habits etc So please post your best plant pics! :bounce:
  10. 8) Yeah sorry for not explaining. It is if you ate meat in UK between 1970s and 1986 or something... then you may carry the virus that causes CJD, the human equivalent of mad cow disease. But I prefer to say I have mcd cos I'm happy to be a mad cow rather than some completely unpronounceable disease.
  11. Not me! I got mad cow disease when I lived in UK... or at least they think I have it and I'm still waiting for the symptoms... I do support those who can and do give blood! Great thing you can do for others.
  12. Looks great! I spent a while enjoying my pond-full of minnows in the sun today. Glorious and nice to see the females starting to fill with eggs. :bounce:
  13. And don't forget it makes it much much harder to clean or reach in to get things!!!
  14. Hi Ryan, there are no wounds visible, and I hadn't seen any other fish taking any interest at all, so I don't think it is bullying. I wondered about the dreaded Malawi bloat. there is the lack of appetite, listlessness and possibly a slight (very!) distention of the anal area. I've shifted him to a separate tank, and will try Epsom salts - I don't have any here sadly, so it will have to wait till tomorrow evening. Mostly all the fish are doing well. I spotted a few yellow fry today, but no sign of them now.
  15. I have a Pseudotropheus demasoni that is just hanging out at the surface, gasping a bit and looking sad. It's fins are clamped, but using it's pectorals to keep afloat up there. The belly area looks a bit pale and almost translucent. What do you think I should do? I can move it to a hospital tank, but what meds, or treatment?
  16. Yeah :bounce: :bounce: I think some club members go regularly when the Marine Education Centre have their open days ( 1st Sunday of the month?) - after seeing them, rock pooling is great and close. whatever, we could do one trip out Pukerua Bay way and one to Island Bay area. OOH, and native fish hunts, night trips, Battle hill picnic, gosh there's so much to do!
  17. Ah Preacher, I know that small back track well... there are frogs and all sorts along that small stream - including scary dudes that stopped me going there alone. They "May" have been baiting traps for possums, but I dunno. Anytime you're going for a night walk, let me know... Last time I was at the dam, there were people "fishing" for koura using pantyhose bags on a line. They said there was lots in the dam.
  18. Actually as much as I like Pukerua Bay and the nearby (ish  ) Rocky Bay at Titahi Bay, I really would recommend Princess Bay or Island Bay. Princess Bay is between Houghton Bay and Lyall Bay. There is a good selection of rocks, great access and parking and toilets ( well they are important with kids!) The marine life there is varied - it has the full range of rocky coastal life, like lots of different starfish, anemones...fish.
  19. :bounce: :bounce: Sounds like a great trip! I'm real sorry I can't be there I love Papaitonga. I found paraphanta (oops, properly Powelliphanta) snail shells there along the streambeds. Have a great time! Are Margarette and Geoff still involved with Horowhenua FB? If so, give them my regards. We were in the Waitohu Streamcare group together.... ah happy memories of planting things and potting up... life before fish
  20. what about using hairgrass or something similar? I think it would fit well with the scale of the pagoda!
  21. A Life Member of Upper Hutt club, Trevor Sartorelli, passed away this week. Trevor hadn't been keeping fish for a few years now, but I'm sure there are fishy friends out there who will remember him. R.I.P.
  22. Upper Hutt club are having an auction in October. I'm pretty sure KMAC also have another auction planned, possibly also in October. 10% commission to club at both. Cam, Karen has offered to give you a lift to the club. She's in Stokes Valley too.
  23. It was beautiful here this morning too! :bounce: Then at lunchtime it poured down just as I'm organising a van drive.  But it was still fine enough to go out enjoy it. Yesterday it was warm and sunny at Lyall Bay in the afternoon - I saw people swimming! (mad people...) The beach/pavement was crowded and really buzzing with people. I think they were delirious by the sunshine. Then I drove home to the rain-sodden Hutt valley.
  24. :bounce: What a great time! Thanks heaps to Stella for organising, and the others who opened their homes to us. I'm too excited planning my new tanks to sleep! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: The Upper Hutt club contingent who went today are now planning a native fish hunt, once the river goes down (and warms up? ).
