  1. thank you!! I would love some - but would they cope with the lone male? I don't want breeding, just visual impact!
  2. I lost a female angel fish today. When I got to work ( she's in a work tank) she was head down in the corner, obviously dead. No marks on her, but a little reddish behind one eye. Her mate is a large black and orange stripe but with a bent fin. Now I'm wondering if I can/should replace the female and if so, do I have to get another large fish? Could I put more than one in? The residents at work really like seeing the angels. The tank is a three foot bow front (someone said 200l but that seems a lot to me) Other tank mates are a few glowlights, neons and four corys. The tetras are going soon, will be replaced by more visible platys.
  3. Does anyone know if cory species can interbreed? I would think it's only possible with very closely related species, certainly within the sub groups (punctatus, barbatus, aeneus etc.) Given the huge number of corys being discovered, I'm guessing some natural hybridisation has occurred. I've got four species, and discovered some large eggs in a tank containing adults of two species - C. metae and C. schwartzii. they are in different sugroups, so I expect they couldn't interbreed. As to the eggs, I'm picking it's the schwartzii. Only eight eggs so far, but here's hoping I can raise them!
  4. I just read in an old Aquatic World mag (thanks Eddie!) of using a plastic bag with holes punched into it. Take a large clear plastic bag, a piece of wire (coat hanger thickness). Use a hole punch to put holes in the bag. so water will go in and out but the fish can't. Thread wire all round the top and twist ends to make a handle to hang on the tank. Starve the fish for a day, put favorite food in bag and tip the opening so that the fish have access. This should mean that the fish will go in without having to drag a net through precious plants. I must try it. Now where's that hole punch?
  5. totally not meant to wound. I actually enjoyed my three circuits of the aquarium...and the extra squeezed tuatara samples!
  6. For both security guard and jellyfish?
  7. Thanks heaps!!! What a fantastic weekend. My first conference too and I had a great time. except for eating the yukky jellyfish. Now to get rid of the tune in my head..."the wheels on the bus go round and round"  Roll on Tasman's turn...
  8. Thanks! Now to find it a new home. Any one interested? PM me with offers.
  9. I bought this ages ago but now it's outgrown my tank. I want to sell it but need to know what it is first! http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x273/Foxglove_03/Largeswordplant.jpg http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x273/Foxglove_03/largeswordinternal2.jpg I think it is a sword - what do you think? Sorry for the poor quality of the photos. By the by, big thanks to Jono for the how to vid on loading pics! :bounce:
  10. You can also get the pill crusher from some pharmacies- they are used for people too! I have a ceramic mortar & pestle - thought I was the only one who ground up flake in it!
  11. Yeah, that looks great! I would suggest using rocks or driftwood to get the slope and height, then poking small containers with plants at the top - unless you want to silicone in a glass shelf to hold them. There is a great book called The Natural Aquarium (it might be by Takashi Amano) which features a couple of tanks like this.
  12. Also, gardeners describe Propagating sand as "Sharp Sand" so it really isn't a surprise that it could damage barbels. I've seen those glass shards in it!
  13. Yeah I thought that but they do seem ok in it. I prefer to use Plasterer's sand, washed well. It is really fine, and they love sifting through it. I've also got some fine beach gravel - I got it myself and found areas where it was pregraded by the tide.
  14. Hi, you can also use a piece of cucumber or courgette as bait too. I drop a slice in (weighted with a spoon through it) and by the next day it is covered in snails.
  15. Thanks. That makes sense. After all the hot n dry weather, the pond has been quite warm and evaporated lots. Apparently I have a good range of invertebrates for a pond of it's size, according to some biologists at last weekend's Otari Bioblitz. Yay. I'll have to get more oxygen plants, and hose the pond.
  16. Yeah, I like microworms too! I find them great for fry and also the middle ground swimmers, like harlequins and shy tetras. The culture is good value - as you can divide them immediately, to end up with two or three running. I like to keep a back up. I feed them with porridge oats mixed with water and active yeast. Go for it!
  17. Hi, have you tried microworms? They are small, and float slowly down, allowing time for the fish to eat them.

    HI EVERYONE!

Welcome Back! I had missed you. I'm sorry to hear of your loss. It is heartbreaking to lose a precious pet, and yes you can lose interest in others while you grieve. That's normal. After three years, my "new" cat has finally taken the place in my heart of her predecessor. Hugs and smiles, Hellen
  19. Yeeha! :bounce: :bounce: Go the white clouds! Sounds like them in my pond: I bought 12, lost about half, but they've multiplied up to a whole bunch.
  20. yay for my kribs! :bounce: :bounce: Today I've been watching the parents carefully, and they've just brought out their second spawning. Looks like it is a fairly small batch - about twentyfive. Both parents are hovering very close.
  21. hiya, I was browsing this site last night and found some good info: http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/ Especially the article on "Haps vs Mbuna". Happy reading!
  22. Congrats Jono! :bounce: :bounce: Those babies look so cute. By the way, the two pearl danios that snuck in with the platys are still doin' fine - have doubled in size already! Microworms are so good for fry
  23. Beautiful pic and lovely fish! Do you have them in their own Lake Tang tank? You have Leleupi too, don't you? Are they in together?
