  1. should be fine. Rock salt doesn't usually contain iodine, or "flow" agent, which are what you need to look out for in salt.
  2. hi, yes shelled. I put a few in the microwave for a few secs to blanch them, then squeeze to shell, and put in the tank. My ramshorn snails love them, as well as the otos and rummy-nose tetras.
  3. I've had my pond for about six months. It is raised-side, 2m square about 45cm deep. Lots of white clouds in it. And this weekend I discovered leeches in it! There are also damselfly larvae, which I've been removing since Spidersweb said they eat fish fry. I've got diving beetles and boatmen, daphnia and mozzie larvae too. I first spotted the leeches on a diving beetle, then when I was repotting a waterlily, got one on my hand. Yuck! They're really tiny, about 1/2cm at most. Does anyone know if they will be a problem for the white clouds?? I want more fry and haven't noticed any for months.
  4. hi, have you tried feeding peas? It seems to help alot of digestive problems. I had the same problem with some bristlenoses - they all died. I believe I was overfeeding and something must have gone bad in the tank. So maybe cut down the food and try the peas. Good luck!
  5. You could always go for anglefish. I also like kribensis - plenty of colour.
  6. Welcome in from the sea! Yeah I'd love a marine tank one day - and also native freshwater in my pond. Good luck with your studies, and have fun with the fishies.
  7. an update. The one lone fry is now about 1.5cm long, and happy as. :bounce: I have had two lots of eggs laid a week apart, with the first lot hatching day before the second lot were laid. I've seen at least one of these babies alive. Twice I've spotted pin-head sized wriggles in the gravel! :bounce: Advice from the KapiMana crew last night was to take the latest lot of eggs out and raise them separately, though sitting in the same tank in a smaller container.
  8. By the by, how many species of Danio do you have? And are they all the available ones in NZ? There were quite a few on that link you gave. I guess we don't have the devarios here. The kyathit and your latest one are certainly two of the pretty ones!
  9. Way to go Paul!! That is fantastic. Do you get anything special for it? Or "just" another certificate via the club?
  10. carrot Pumpkin pie or pecan pie
  11. I agree with Tsarmina re catfish. I had a betta that had various tankmates including Angels, Moonlight gourami, dwarf gourami, Kribensis; along with cardinal tetras and harlequins. The only fish the betta got on with were the small tetras and the harlequins. He flared and provoked/attacked all the others. Eventually I got sick of him being grumpy, sulking or agressive! Just my experience. He was Beautiful!
  12. Baked beans. Curry or Stir-fry?
  13. Just found one lone baby cory! :bounce: I was doing a water change and saw something wriggling by the siphon end. Took a closer look and it is about a cm long. Yay! Looks like it has some good survival skills. Pity there haven't been any other eggs laid.
  14. writes cereal or toast?
  15. TV1 ( don't get tv3!) Beach or river?
  16. Hiya, try this site for a compatibility chart. http://www.timstropicals.com/Compatibil ... Search.asp It isn't foolproof, but gives a basic idea. Local knowledge is better though.

    hi there

Welcome! Wow- you are new to fish-keeping and you've got a six-foot tank already? That is fantastic! I'm glad the pleco survived the shampooing. Very sad for the others. See you on Thursday.
  18. I have my first brood of krib fry! Yay :bounce: About 15 made it. They are now 1 month old, and still in the community tank with the parents and eleven tetras (rummy-nose and cardinals). So they are hardy! At what age are they ok to offer to others or sell? Their dad is now chasing mum, so maybe another brood will be on the way. Should I shift the fry to another tank? If so, should it be bare bottom or planted with sand/gravel? I don't have a sponge filter, but a spare hob. Would this be ok? So many questions...
  19. Wow, that looks great!
  20. I saw my angels doing the shaking and lip-locking thing last year, and now they're just past their second batch of fry. So I say it is likely to be mating/spawning rituals. Sadly my angels are in a slightly overstocked community tank, in a main thoroughfare! Maybe in a few months I'll sort them into their own place so they can have a crack at raising the fry beyond wriggler stage. They get stressed and the mum ate the fallen wrigglers, instead of spitting them back onto the leaf! Bad mommy!
  21. Congratulations! That is fantastic news. :bounce: :bounce: That will make Wed's club night news more interesting! A real shame that I will miss it. Anyhow, enjoy! Bask in the glory...
  22. ugh, I didn't know that about cories. The little kribsters are doing really well! I went away for a week and came back to see them swimming all over the tank, with parents on guard duty. The little ones separate and swim all over, and they don't seem to be scared of the tetras. They are now too big for one swallow, but not out of danger I guess.
  23. yeah, the eggs didn't last. I think they got to hatching stage but were eaten then. Next time!
  24. Hiya. I have had two pair of kribs, and have one pair with fry at the moment. They live happily with cardinal and rummy-nose tetras and harlequins, but the 2 gouramis (dwarf and moonlight) and betta all had to go, as they got too close and aggressive when the kribs tried to create breeding space. Even the rummynose tetras are a little too curious/daring for my liking, but the krib parents are really awesome at chasing them away. Kribs are great little cichlids and I really recommend them for beginners (like me!)
  25. I prefer tanks to be natural, but do like tastefully done ornaments - like Evil Elmo's example above - great! My two tanks have driftwood, rocks and plants. The work tank is more fake - white gravel and a fake driftwood ornament. But seeing as how the angels just succesfully spawned on it, I'm not complaining too much!
