  1. even better for MAF's concerns about our fish establishing in the water ways.
  2. there is that option to, to me a runt is totally different to a deformed fish. deformed needs to be dealt with but if a runt simply isn'y going to reproduce as well or not at all well that is a natural "un-selection process".
  3. interesting but i don't think that will do our hobby much good if we all left the fry in the tank as the numbers available will be significantly less. in the wild the fish have plenty of space, not 200L to share with all inhabitants so the mortality rate could be higher. If i use my trophs as an example, there is a group within the group that does the breeding. Keeping trophs, you generally need large numbers to spread the aggression so the runts that may not be very good for breeding later are excellent for keeping the numbers up in the group. horses for courses i guess, they all have their place in the small societies we keep them in.

    Fx5 help

if it has braces like this then i would expect greg made it as he is the only one i have seen that does it that way, it makes it so you can't fit your canister piping which i explained to him but it fell on deaf ears. his response was "it depends on what you use as a filter" but canisters are by far the most common way of filtering a tank. the braces are fine with overflow setups but it is still not ideal for any chords you need for heaters, wave makers etc. I got him to drill holes for the canister piping but it is not perfect as the holes are too far from the back panel for suction cups at the top of the tank.
  5. i don't know how it will be with no lids, i would be more concerned about the fish jumping out.

  12. that's so 20th century  & yellow online is so late 90's
  13. i regularly setup tanks & add fish the same day. I use water, substrate & filter from an existing tank, job done.
  14. 10mm has a safety factor of 5 which is massive, my 2.0m x 0.45m tank is made from 8mm which has a safety factor of 2.5
  15. stella has given a good explanation. here is an easy to use calculator http://fishkeepers.co.nz/index.php/tank_builder/
  16. exactly, it is business (profit driven) feeding into the hobby (emotion driven). there are always going to need to be safe bets made on the profit side for that supply to continue. We may be lucky & see "big risks" taken from time to time like the zebra plecos but the market here is far too small to sustain many risks & the big risks will be few & far between.
  17. if it wasn't there i doubt a viewing window would have been achievable, maybe at a reasonable cost in comparison to the setup. that is an awesome tank/pool what ever you would like to call it.
  18. when additional pressure is applied it will let go at it weakest point, if the front right corner was lower then the others then the water would have applied more pressure in that corner. it could be a number of things, hope it wasn't your username
  19. so, any idea of the cause? was the tank level?
  20. i have had great success with jager heaters, for a 1000L i would recommend a 300W plus another 200W as a assistant heater. The 300W is rated for up to 1000L but i would say that would be ok if in a warm room. the other consideration is the 300W heater is a little over 50cm long so if that is not going to be suitable then maybe a couple of 250W or similar.
  21. mate, i think you need to chill out a bit. i cannot see where you have been "called out", to me there are merely simple responses in the discussion of people learning latin names. i cannot see where any of those posts are challenging the encouragement of it, it just discussion.
  22. still less time that it takes an aucklander to get across town
  23. seeing it is local you could go & have a look. for me, one of the main requirements of a tank is that it does not leak. If it doesn't then there can't be too much wrong with it. Other components like filter & lights will need to be checked out, it doesn't matter what the quality is things can & will fail so another aspect may be how accessable are replacement parts. can a canister be fitted to it? if so then it's not a big deal if the pump stops working.
