  1. its not different just not working the same what's flukes?
  2. Hi all, have just noticed that my fryeri juvie male "has one oar in the water". at first i thought he was missing a fin on his left side but it actually is back against his body not doing much. as the other side happily fans away his left fin does about two ot three revs per minute while his right does a hundred or so. anyone know what the problem is or might be? there are no other changes in his behaviour.
  3. my angels try to pick on the gaurami but the gaurami almost behave like the angels are not there
  4. that a long way from up here for something that size
  5. there has been a few threads posting the calc method. as for the top frame I think it is good but will need a blast & paint at some point. avon industries in kamo have the facilities to blast & paint the frame
  6. i would go to a small kichen manufacturer & tell them what you want for size. i have my 2 footer sitting on a microwave box face down. microwave cabs are 632mm wide, perfect for a 2 footer
  7. matertrade will get you what ever you want, you may have to buy 500 bulbs though
  8. now that, in a democratic society, we have decided its nitrates that the reason behind it, what are they actually doing? I have seen mine do it very close up as they are in a tank right behind the couch so i sit literally am a few inches away. when i seen it happen they dont seem to actually scrape their bodies on the substrate. their fin gets close but not totally sure it actually touches the substrate either.
  9. on a design level is all about how you support & transfer the weight to the floor. the floor is holding your tank & stand up! if that tank is 500L it'll weigh 500kg plus substrate rock etc & plus stand. it may end up being 650 to 700kg total. i would recommend a flat base rather than legs to spread the weight evenly across its length rather than 4 or 6 legs that point load the floor.
  10. hi there, judging by the pics you have done a good job. it looks great. how many litres is the tank & is it going on top? I am a cabinet maker am am a little concerned it may not have enough side ways bracing. by the look of your tank im guessing its about 200L, maybe you could test it by getting 3 or 4 adults sitting on the cab before filling your tank. this is only a guess from the pics so may be well off the mark but i would rather suggest something than have it turn bad.
  11. my fryeri & yellow labs do that too, i think its either trying to show off or something similar. I have only noticed my males doing it
  12. i can recommend cichlid-forum.com Here are some pics of my juvies Fryeri another fryeri Yellow Lab another yellow lab
  13. I have two 150 jebo's in my 200L tank & have no problems to mote. tank has been going for over a year & never had any problems.
  14. i got my swamp kauri from a subdivision excavation
  15. dont they scratch the glass, i use a razor blade to scrape glass clean.
  16. the best for fry tanks are the air pump run sponge filters & the filters are quite cheap, think my twin sponge filter was around $12
  17. i purchased three e yellows & all were females. maybe females are more common in the wild as males can spawn with many females.
  18. i had alot of BBa in my 200L tank. dosed as directed & after two days the BBA started to go red then white on the third. I used a standard size bottle & have not had it back. that was about 6 months ago. I tried another product which didnt work, replaced all my plants & that didn't work either. it ended up costing me about $120 in the end & i originally got it from plants that i bought at the LFS in the first place.
  19. anyone think the same principal would apply with these as africans, more fish to disperse the aggresion. if there is too many to fight with they loose interest
  20. make sure its flourish excell
  21. I look at it like we are trying to best create a naturale enviroment so i think night time is important for them. I have noticed that if i turn the lights on in the morning before dawn & throw some food in the fish stumble round like they are waking up when they try to eat.
  22. I know exactely, i drove the LFS employees batty for a while there as i would ask for fish that weren't available in NZ.
