  1. ive wanted one for 18 months now & havn't seen one let alone a price. there are brackish puffers usually available.
  2. yeah & who minds if a neon or two go missing. they are cheap enough & thats what would happen in the wild.
  3. clown loaches will demolish the infestation you are about to have if its a community tank you have.
  4. don't we all? maybe if one of us manages to get one we could share, month on month off. these are what you are after Brazilian Puffer or SAP (south american puffer)
  5. i'll net em out & see what their bits look like. also 2 of my fryeri males have not coloured up (they have a bit of colour) while one male has been fully coloured for two months now & they are all the same batch.
  6. really? why wodn't mine have coloured yet? here's a pic of mine
  7. I have added a apir of baenschi peacocks to my tank. they are about two inches long. anyone know what size will they will colour up?
  8. angels & discus etc are south american & electric yellows & blues etc are african cichlids & have thier own specific water parameters. I have only had peru altums & they were "chasey" of the gaurami at times but faught between themselves more than with others.
  9. dont get confused with African cichlids. africans should never be mixed with community fish
  10. i just broke down my community which had a pair of large angels with gaurami, neons, glowlights, serpae neons & a range of loaches etc. i never had any probs with the angels eating or attacking others when they weren't spawning.
  11. i have seen something either the same or similar to the maingano recently in my LFS. unfortunately i didnt see a name for it.

    Rockwork

I have found a source of rock work from a quarry locally which is near the Golden Bay Cement quarry. The stone has a high lime content, anyone know if this affect the fish in any way?

    My next skimmer

is there a quick explination for a freshwater hobbiest that has no idea of what it is.
  16. i hope for their sake they do settle in, they are the lowest on my prefered species list so it will be a case of seeeeyouuuu if they cause trouble.
  17. figures, the shop couldnt tell me what exacetly they are. they are by far the smallest in the tank so they shouldnt get the upper hand. would i assume the blueish one is a male & yellow female?
  18. Hi all, when trading in my angel pair the store gave me these two cichlids. They were described as Stripped cichlids. Can someone please tell me what the latin name is?
  19. well, its done & the fish are happily swimming around in their new larger home. went from this to this in under 24 hours. please excuse the aquascaping, that will be progressively done.
  20. well, i have just done it. I ended up emptying the tank completly as the sand got all mixed up. I turned off the taps to the canister. added the crushed marble substrate then half filled the tank with a hose & added hot water to get the temp up while the heaters were also working. once the temp got to 24 i opened the taps & pluged in the filter. all seems to be fine for now, will test the water tomorrow & see how it goes.
  21. i have seen brackish puffers in HFF Albany a litle while back, there must be some around. now i think of it, im sure there was also one on Trademe recently to.
  22. I guess if it turned the filter off, emptied the tank as quick as possible & refilled it the bacteria in the filter wodn't die over that time....... what about the temp vs the bacteria? if i filled it with the hose would the temp kill everything in the filter?
  23. Thanks, i have had a pretty lucky run so far with getting good stock. Spose at the end of the day I like them & im the one that has to look at them.
  24. i thought i may chuck it in then do a water change an hour or so after & let it settle. i am going to remove the sand/gravel substrate first which i may let settle then use a gravel vac to get the last of it. this may turn to custard & i may have to start from scratch thinkn bout it. :-?
  25. Hi all. I am getting rid of my community fish in the next few days to change my 200L community tank to an african setup. my favourites (africans) are out growing their tank & i don't have the space for another big tank. Should i just remove the fish, plants, driftwood & substrate etc leaving the existing water in the tank. Then add the crushed marble that i intend to use as a substrate & after settling for a day or two start adding the africans or completely empty the tank & start from scratch as if was a new tank? hope all that makes sense to you.
