  5. theyre blue to mimic moon light. it gives them a ghostly appearance late at night. ok, i may of made that up :slfg: i put my blueish one in a tank without a blue background a few weeks ago. will see if that changes anything.

  7. there is some negativity surrounding microchips. ie possibly cause tumours. But, from what I can gather, as a whole the risk is very low. still very interested to hear from keepers who have had it done. may be a good way to keep track of breeding lines etc ... frogs: http://tropicalis.berkeley.edu/home/husbandry/tags/microchips.html
  8. to id it yes. to track it no. just the same as for cats n dogs ...
  9. Any info/opinions appreciated. Had a couple of turtles done in the past...no issues. If anyone has had skinks, dragons, and or frogs done Id be keen to hear from you. PM/email if don't want to disclose/discuss publicly. Cherry
  10. rocks are no good for their shells though :sage: what is the current tank like? ? ? basking light? bigger filter? new uv tube? take out the sand :slfg:
  11. yeah, even if you suss out the breeding, it's the time required to do it that makes it undesirable for most. maybe feeder fish, shrimp, daphinia, mosie larvae etc would be more appropriate ...
  12. eliminate moisture and the mites should go away. not good raising mealworms in damp conditions regardless of mites. mealworms are cheap enough per 1000 from biosuppliers. i no longer bother breeding them for my own pets, as much easier to just purchase some and grow them on a bit if need be. i hardly use mealworms in general these days though. id love to see an aro rasied on crickets, locusts, slaters, roaches, worms etc, more so than i would mealworms. frogs fed on crickets daily: grow like nothing ive seen before.
  13. Yeah Ive been dreaming of more cost effective live food for some years. Would be nice to say the least. Superworms have been in NZ (some claim for many years), but authorities claim theyre a new organism so -at this stage- not worth keeping imo. Mealworms are ok, size isnt everything when it comes to live food. But it can be, too big = potentially lethal, too small = no real harm, just extra work/stimulation for the predator which is good as long as they arnt so small the predator loses interest. Lots of small feeders, is much better than one big feeder imo. Can get freeze dried superworms in nz. think hff stocks them. Nice fish Henward.
  14. pellets are so last millennium :slfg:
  15. "Estradiol has not only a critical impact on reproductive and sexual functioning, but also affects other organs, including the bones" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estradiol wonder if that is why the albinos are so derformed ...
  16. 100% water change is likely to stress the turtle. jmo 20-50% twice a week maybe. but i just do what needs to be done and for the water to be clear. things fluctuate, i compensate, animals look great :smln: tbh i sometimes would do a waterchange every day (especially on hatchlings), but only to suck out excess food. upto 10litres then top up. that was fine for 30-40 hatchlings. miss a day or two and you know about it
  17. one weeks observtion of two snakenecks is hardly much to guage what theyre actually like. once filter is cycled, and providing you dont overfeed. 20-50% wc a week should be heaps.
  18. is it fair to say brumation is a survival mechanism more so than a breeding one
  19. does anyone know where to purchase large sheets of foam similar to what spoon mentioned above?
