  1. Very tidy - Is the glass that optiwhite stuff or is it just nice n clean?
  2. GZ_Loach - yeah probably. i think the smugglers got off lightly. smuggling is not as harmless as one may think
  3. "sentenced to 4 1/2 months in prison. But because of the time they have already served Dieter Ernst and Thorsten Richartz will be released in a few days. They were arrested two months ago." two months + a few days doesnt equal 4 1/2 months :sage: must be getting let out early on good behaviour lol GZ_Loach driving a car drunk and crashing it, is a bit different to intentionally travelling across the world to smuggle endangered wild life. If you drive drunk and crash your car, your a b idiot...mechanics are not cheap
  4. just curious: where do yours brumate? do they dig holes, or just under foliage or... ?
  5. ive seen that once after one frog tried to eat another and failed. maybe just keep it in a small plastic tank on its own for a few days and see how it goes.
  6. i would just drop a cube of bloodworms in. maybe poke with a stick to try an attract turtle eyes to the food. remove any uneaten food after 5 minutes they hardly eat greens when young. duckweed is good as it floats and if feeding floating pellets for example they cant avoid eating some of the duckweed. gives them a little bit of cover which they seem to like. http://www.youtube.com/user/nzexotics#p/u/20/uYPoCLljj5g could bump the temp up slightly to 28C. once the turtle has been settled & eating well for atleast a couple of weeks drop back down to 25/26C. Fish could be adding stress to the turtle. bns are nocturnal (i think) so could be disturbing the turtles at night. bns have nice barbs too.
  7. try and find out what it was previously eating. stubborn hatclings often like frozen bloodworms. sand is very questionable. cant beat a bare bottom tank for monitoring whats going on and keeping water pristine. they can be very shy when young. i wouldnt bother trying to feed in a saparate container until it is eating on its own and with confidence. even then if you have a good filter i dont see the point. just causes stress for the animal moving it around. try not to disturb it too much while settling in. maybe cover the sides of the tank with a towel for a week or two. it wont bask if disturbed too often. once they start to trust you and associate you with food things change rather fast
  8. what does the inverter do? would i still need a power adapter to run them?
  9. they were on the dse website within the last year or so. guy in shop couldnt find anything similar the other day. i use to use a bug zapper hung next to the tank as a moonlight. led strips would be much more direct though and is what i want. bunnings had led christmas lights similar to what is in the trademe link above. they didnt have any blue left though.
  10. you'd have to be pretty out there to feed coke and pork to an aro at the same time :smln:
  11. seems that dse no longer have them ...
  12. which led strips in particular is everyone using/having trouble with. jaycar have two sorts. http://www.jaycar.co.nz/productResults.asp?keywords=blue+led+strip&keyform=KEYWORD&SUBMIT.x=0&SUBMIT.y=0 then theres these http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=371473902
  13. 120cm long x 30cm wide x 30cm deep (may make it double the depth yet).
  14. Any recommendations for moonlighting? Blue leds strips run from a dc adapter? or has anyone else seen something suitable on the market. What about Ultraviolet lights? Bunnings had a UV compact fluro. Is for whistling tree frogs.
  15. Just watched a frog shedding its skin. It had little bits of sand entwined amongst the skin :-? . As they shed they they work the skin forward to their mouth & eat it. So maybe not a good idea to use sand. I've never noticed this with coarse sand before though.
  16. whistling/brown tree frogs are such characters
  17. yep river sand. i normally use daltons propagating sand, that's coarse grade (could cause impaction very easily but never had any trouble here). I do try cover most with moss but not always and frogs seem ok. beach sand maybe ok, southern bells breed in the sand dunes near the beach down this way. So must have some salt tolerance. Not sure about other species. You try it first and let me know  . Oh yeah get it from a quarry you dont want to get in trouble lol
  18. i put some bells on sand last week. for the first few hours they had sand stuck to them. Now not a trace. Is like they got use to it and stopped rolling in it lol
  19. Bunnings had (probably still do) a single fitting, double fitting, and a double fitting with sensor. like this .. http://www.mitre10mega.co.nz/shop/lighting/exterior_lighting/arlec_diy_security_light_bc_fit_102767/ Inside the plastic is a ceramic screw fitting just like on tm. Single or double fittings were under $10 from memory. Was cheaper than just the fitting from an electrical shop anyway. I use to strip the plastic and just hang the fitting. Good with plastic on and actually mounted to something to though. just need to wire a plug on but that's basic enough.
  20. I had a rat trap outside the back door at my old place. Heard it go bang then heard the trap flapping around. Went out and the rat had made it about 5m out to the garden where it had a hole that went under the house. Thing is it couldnt fit back in its hole with the trap attached :sml1:. Not a very humane way to get rid of them.
  21. It is silly how the flash is automatic on some functions. In M/manual you can still get just as close i think. I want a macro lens and decent flash. Probably should pay off the camera first though
  22. Cool. I thought you already had an HD capable phone (i recall from your youtube)? I use the M function for taking pics most of the time. Probaby M for manual? lol Manual focus all the way. Auto focus is to slow and noisy for my liking. I really need to go back and read the manual again. Sometimes everything looks yellow and need to work out how to blur/un blur background especially when recording. I generally just push a few buttons, turn some nobs. and normally that works  haha.
  23. cheers. i should be able to grow a few different mosses and what not in there now.
  24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF1xMrFj6N8 fog tank. should be enough fog
