    Reefs new fish tank

nice reef, cant wait to see some pics of it with the big angel in there.
  2. Joe's juice works well on aipatasia for me, easy and fast to use. a bottle lasts ages, so its economical as well.
  3. mine didnt disapear, i saw it being eaten, funny that you feel it is a good thing, wait till you have the experance yourself.
  4. hay Karma, have you ever had the experance of your anemone eating your prized fish?????? i have..........
  5. Cyno bacterria maybe? there is a good link in the sticky at the top of the saltwater section. most people agree if it is cyno then more flow is your best bet, i had a bit a few months ago, i used vodka at a ratio of 1ml per 100ltrs (400ltr tank, 2ml morning, 2ml night), i also increased my flow, and that took care of it. photos would help.
  6. Thank you pies. do you rinse the drum and replace the kalk every month? or do you just top it up from time to time and keep adding kalk? puttputt, what size power head do you use to stir the 100ltr drum? do you think the pump supplied with the auto top off will be ok to use in a drum of kalk, or am i better to forget the brand new auto top off i have just brought and get a dosing pump on a timer?
  7. Can someone please explain to me the way to use kalk as top off? I am about to get my tunze auto top off running and would like to combine this with kalk, I would like to diy somthing, rather than get a stirrer, but if the stirrer is the best thing then I will do that.

    mysis

i have brine and mysis that ive had for some time, wouldnt be 6 months but at least 3, my fish still eat it with no ill affect. i think the issue would arrise if it was left to defrost then reforzen, then i would chuck it. JMO
  9. Call your boss ignorant, or your teacher, or your partner, or just for fun try it with a police officer. It is offensive if you are on the receiving end. I believe it’s not what your saying its how your saying it. Maybe we could all put together and buy "how to win friends and influence people" for Layton for Xmas, then all you’ll need to do is read it and learn something from
  10. I would defiantly recommend RO/DI over a Ca reactor, to totally different items but you will get more improvement in your tank from spending money on RO/DI than a Ca reactor IMHO i have a RO-MAN RO/DI, good unit, very slow as I'm sure they all are within reason, i got it from wonder world in rotorua, 4 stage, $390. bargain of the year (last year). i have the aqua medic Ca reactor, it is sitting outside my sump and i have no concern about it leaking. i have found this unit needs fine adjustments about once a week, i normally do these when i do the water change, some weeks its all good though. the reg for the Co2 was the pricey bit for me ($149 HFF), i have the tunze model, very good for super fine adjustments, i got the reactor for very cheap so i have no idea what there worth.
  11. From the pictures I have seen puttputts tank speaks for itself (as with some others) 20+ years will have seen some massive changes in this hobby, can’t wait till I have that sort of experience and knowledge. a cold water set up, now that ive got to see, might have to make time to come up for a tank crawl, put some faces to names..... I do still consider myself a newbie in a way, especially when there are people on here that have managed to get through the tuff times in this hobby and carry on to create the stunning tanks they have today. I also believe I have much to learn, seems just when I think ive got my tank sorted I find something else to learn about and correct a problem with the knowledge I gain.
  12. sorry putt putt, i edited that after you posted. (please dont be fooled by the date that i joined this site, i joined RC first, and just read this site from time to time.)
  13. I have had my tank running for 2 years, I have seen tanks that are younger than my setup and they don’t have nutrient problems. I have heard that the last cycle for nitrate can take longer than 6 months to establish, but I think 2 years should be enough. Lots of factors involved im sure, but still more maturing to go? :-?
  14. looks like the genral opnion is uv may help my problem, i will still be going down the denitrator and po4 fluidised reactor road (as i allready own the po4 one and the nitrate one will be here soon) i think rather than add a hole lot of things at once and not be able to tell what changes each item made, i will add the po4 reactor tonight, i will add the denitrator in 2 weeks when it arrives and then look closer into getting a uv after i have seen the results the other 2 have made. this way i will be able to confidentaly say how each item has arrfected/improved my tank.
  15. Evil, i will be interested in following your progress, if you stick to the no fish idea. One question, why did you not put the skimmer on to the smaller tank? You will still get a considerable amount of crap coming out of the rocks, even without feeding. i have a 60-70ltr tank with nothing but rock in it at the moment, the skimmer still fulls up every week, be it less than when i have a fish in there, but it still removing something, so there must be something to be removed....

    chimera's needs help

we could all see that coming. so chimera, anything to report? i hope its getting better.
  17. thanks for posting that Layton, i was going to get around to sending you a pm with some questions, now i dont need too. cheers
  18. yes, i have had thoughts on using uv, i havnt see one that is 40w as this is what layton said i need, but to be honest i havent looked very hard, just lfs and TM, might take a closer look.
  19. a box of po4 remover $70, lasts aprox 6 months nitrate reactor $250 lasts aprox 3-5 years (what ive been told) combined costs per month=$16.66 (no3 remover)+$11.66(po4 remover)=$28.33 this is for a medium stocked 400ltr tank. and you dont need to worry about adjusting your aditives to make sure its working. i can see both side of this coin. however i will be removing zeovit and adding a fluidzed po4 filter and a sulphur denitrator, it will be interesting to see how my corals respond to the change.
  20. needle wheel, its not a brand, its the style of pump. there the best pump in my opnion, and i have owned 4 cheap skimmers, dont waste good money on a cheap skimmer, get one that has a needle wheel pump and you cant go too far wrong. i have seen them for as little as $350 from memory, look like good skimmers, not a name brand but i beleve they are a copy of a name brand.
  21. looks excellent! what lights are you running? seems quite dark in the photos, but could be you camera.
