    Anemone troubles

no new stock in ages, i have changed my lamps, the new ones are far brighter, no other changes. defenatly NITRATES, there the cause of all the losses in my tank (which have been few so far but when they happen its the NITRATES  ) interesting about the secondary feeding thing, i have only fed the anemone maybe 3 times in the last 4 months, i was under the impression i did not need to feed it if i didnt want it to grow, guess ill start feeding it every second day for the next little while and see what responce it has. i dont think its a preditor, it seems more likely to be the feeding. cheers B and KP

    Anemone troubles

my anemone is not looking fantastic it is loosing tentacles, they just float off around the tank. :-? i noticed this for the first time about 2-3 weeks ago, at that point it looked fine, now its not looking so hot and is still shedding tentacles. it will eat, and it is not bleached. i can add a photo later tonight, i figure this will help with diagnosis. so has anyone witnessed this or any ideas on what possibly might be the cause?
  6. wasp sums that up perfectly IMO. if it was me, i would do as has been said, do nothing in a way, may be its best shot. i hope she pulls through.
  7. wheres wasp? i have seen his and its excellent, i beleive he spent some time training it to eat. be good to have a detailed method that you used wasp, if you have time that is.
  8. i have over-under working in my sump, takes up the same room as having it the other way and i can say the over-under should work. (cos it dose in my sump).
  9. this would depend on how you mean "live". most if not all of us start with dead coral as base rock, this will go through a bacteria cycle, after this cycle is complete it is then referred to as live rock, it is live in the form of bacteria that live in the small pores of the rock, this bacteria preform a very important part of the filtration in most reef systems. as far as a coral that is dead returning to it former glory, not in my experience.
  10. honestly, my method is joes juice. work perfectly for me. don't buy a fish to control pests, buy it only if it will do well in your system. copper bands are very hard to keep. great fish that with time an knowledge you can keep for long periods, but this involves teaching them to feed in a tank environment. also there not a sure bet for aiptasia control. this is coming from someone who has lost 2 copperbands. i will try again, next time i will spend more time teaching them to feed.
  11. yep, im in on some stuff if you break it up. EDIT: spelling
  12. HAPPY BIRTHDAY FAY it sucks when things go wrong on your speical day. lets hope he pull through.
  13. excellent, im amazed at the photo, i had a razar recently, never transfered any of the photos to my lap top, wish i had now. the screen on the razar makes the photos look low quality, but from that pick there defenatly not! very cool.

    Red Slime Remover

try taking the sand out, giving it a good rinse and putting it back, or take it out and replace it. this will be easier said that done but will probably go along way to fixing the problem. and any sand you miss will be easy to stir up in the tank, but be careful if it is very dirty, don't want to disturb any nastiness. i have heard bad things about red slime remover, although i have never tried it. i know someone who has a bottle, he will defiantly not be using it, i could see if he will give it to you? that is if you are very certain its the only way for your tank.
  15. should have droped me a line, you would have been welcome to come have a look at my tank.

    Anenomes

plenty of people have plenty of cash for an anemone like that!
  17. well done, looks very good. will be interesting to see how bright the tank looks under thses lights. should be good.
  18. just got home, house very hot, tank 27.5 with all fans running (2 large pc fans over tank and big pedistal fan pointing down on sump), about to drop in a bottle of frozen water, hmmmm chiller is now gone from wish list to need list. :-?
  19. i use 2 large pc fans on my tank, firing from one end to the other, it is open top and has 2x 150w metal halides over it, the fans are controlled by a timer set to come on 30min before the lights and 1 hour after the lights go off. i also have a pedistal fan over my sump that is connected to a temp comtroller using the chiller output. i also use the frozen coke bottle idea, i aim to keep my tank below 27*C so if i notice it just getting over than i will drop a 2.25ltr frozen bottle in and this will drop it back under 27, i have a total volume of around 600ltrs and the frozen bottle will drop it around .5*C and thats with the lights on. i have a saltwater set up, but the same should apply to freshwater. IMO fans are the way to go, unless you can afford to buy and run a chiller or aircon the room.

    RO/DI Units

RO/DI is not dependent on the size of the tank, it is all about water quality, if you use tap water for top off or for mixing salt then you will be adding neutrents to your tank. if you have an RO/DI unit and use this for all water entering the tank, you can be sure it is good water and will not add any neutrents to the tank. its all about keeping the water as clean as possiable. hope that helps. ohh and welcome 8)

    RO/DI Units

this is the same model unit i have, very good units! i got mine from wonderworld in rotorua, Arty sold it to me for $350, but it was at the same time i brought a very large amount of live stock so i think he gave me a reasoniable discount. from memory the box had $450 on it but i may be wrong.
