i have just gone and found my hole saws so i will now be setting up a sump in my spare room :bounce: i have a 4 foot display and im thinking of setting up a 4 foot sump, the main reason for 4 foot as my sump is, i am sick of not having the room in my current tiny sump and figure bigger is better, however i am not certin bigger is better so any advice will be a great help. dose anyone have a picture of there sump design that works well for them? im keen to get a few differant designs and take the best bits and make my own. to get the picture i have the current things in my sump: L7 (return) deltec ts1250 2x heaters 2x sml power head (1 for zeo 1 for ca reactor) zeo reactor (soon to be pump for chiller) i would like a refuge in the sump design, might go dsb might go for frags grow out might not use it at all, just like the options it gives me. i have no limit of space (well under 10ft long) so if bigger again then cool or if smaller then cool. advice please

my high temp alarm went off yesterday, 30.2o at 5pm, had 2 pc fans hoked up and they had evaporated a heap of water but hadnt helped in cooling, i put a big fan pointing down towards the water surface, also put a frozen coke bottle into the sump. it took just over 12hrs to come back to 24o, i will now see how today goes, lights have just come on but im at work so cant be sure of temp. anyone got a chiller for sale? my guess is i will have to get one as we are no where near the summer months and already i have cooling problems.

thank you for sharing fay, its a good read.

Ca reactor. i have used the seachem reef advantage calcium, works well also contains strontium and magnesium. how many hard corals do you have now?

i now have a heater controller with heater and chiller out puts. :bounce: i am going to try hooking the chiller part into 2 pc fans via a small 12v transformer, and see if that will be ok before spending the huge cash a chiller costs. would it be better to have the fans sucking or blowing air past the halides? i have a suround on the top of my tank that i will mount the fans into. any ideas are welcome

some very cool pics, i like the downward shots.

sorry i dont have one, but i am very interested to hear how well they control bristle worms, my mums tank has a few bristle worms and she hates them.

raglan is 1.026-7 refractometer at 25 degrees, i add a bit of hot RO DI water to take the chill out and tip it in my sump let the heater work for a few min (while im packing up my buckets etc) the turn the return back on. should add i run my tank at 1.025 normally.

it is deceiving, but i agree there is not enough room, i also want to run my carbon on the top which is not possiable with the room that there is, i will be getting a larger cannister this week which will have plenty of room for the carbon as well. i should say that although i set this up it was not my idea, ben is to be credited for thinking outside the squre and coming up with the plan for this one.

im too lasy to take the reactor out tonigh so i can get a decent shot. top down with water cascading over the top of the chamber can just make out the power head that is running it, connected via a short peice of tube.

yep thats reef tamks totally sumed up in one statement, good things take time. im sure i will notice the differance in a month as the no3 starts to drop. just think of all the poos my anemonie will do after eating its most expensive meal yesterday. :-? ill take a pic of that reactor and post it for you wasp.

totally agree, that was the idea i was hoping for. come on guys and girls, dont be shy.

i got home from work today and looked into my tank, to find my anemone eating my regal angle! yes that's correct, it was half way out its mouth!, my maroon clown was hiding behind the anemone looking very shy! i wasn't sure weather to try to remove my favorite fish from the mouth (it was well dead) as i didn't want to damage the anemone, after looking at it for a few minutes i couldn't take it any longer and decided to remove it, to my surprise it was easy to remove from the mouth but the tentacles were holding onto it very firmly, i decided to let it keep it and see what happened, after 15min or so it let go of the regal angle and i removed him from the tank. here is a link to a picture i took just prior to removing him from the anemone's mouth, i have left it as a link as it is graphic and may offend some people, you have been warned! http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j41/jdm_2006_2006/IMG_0275.jpg i believe this is the most horrible thing i have witnessed in my tank over the last 2 years, i am gutted! however, i would like to learn from this experience so at least something good can come of it. do you think the fish would have to have been dead to be caught by the anemone? (it looked happy as only 10hrs before) the sting on the anemone is defiantly stronger than it was a while ago (i can feel it through my hand) is this a sign that i am not feeding it enough? i guess this is a relatively normal thing for anemones to do, as they would use fish as a source of food in the wild, how can we prevent such tragedies in the future?

thanks chimera, i have the brochure as well, its a good read but im more interested in the experance of people here. i guess i will have to make sure i shake the media daily, makes sense and the bacterria needs the zeolite as a place to do its thing so shaking the media will therefore allow new bacterria to do it thing and allow the old bacterria to be skimmed or consuimed. i get it now

i will post a pic of the DIY reactor when i get home later tonight, it isnt the best and i will be making more mods to it when my larger ehiem cannister arrives this week some time. i should come clean and say that zeovitnz said to use the 2ml zeostart daily for the first 2 weeks and then 4 drops after that, i did that but then increased it again 2 months ago on his recomendation, maybe cut down? i will put the reactor on a timer tonight and see what differance that makes. wasp, do you shake the media daily? i have not been doing this as much as i should  hence the design change to the reactor.

ok i am not trying to start another long winded thread on the contents of zeovit, this thread is being started to talk to local people who use or have used the zeovit products, not the other products that are similar, i want to discuss the genuine zeovit system. all are welcome if you questions are on topic and will be in a friendly mannor. i am sure there are quite a few people on here that have no idea what the system is used for and how to use it (notice i did not say how it works, as this has been one of the factors in piror threads that has ended up going no where) i have been using zeovit for the last 3 months or so, i have been sticking strictly to the advice given to me by zeovitnz (you are very welcome to talk about the products zeovitnz, as i beleve you have experance that will benifit us all) i am not using the reccomended reactor, i am using a DIY ehiem filter cannister with a open top and a tray with a stick attached to it, with a ehiem 400lph pump pushing the water through. i decided to use this system to reduce po4 and no3 as well as the other benfits that come as far as feeding corals etc, i started the zeovit system just as i added my first sps, i started becouse i want to add more sps to my tank and would like to give them the water quality the need to do well. i am currently using the basic 4, zeolite rock, zeofood, zeobac, zeostart. my first of many questions is, i have a low po4 reading (0.00-0.03) but i have a no3 reading of approx 40 ppm (its darker than 20 but lighter than 50) i dose 4 drops of zeofood and 2ml of zeostart daily and 2 drops of zeobac twice weekly, i have a 400ltr tank, i have been dosing this way for nearly 2 months having only missed 3 daily doses. what can i do to lower my no3 reading? i was hoping it will get lower with time but i would like it to get lower sooner rather than later.

i have the cannon power shot S3IS, it is a very good camera, with the added feture of super macro, (has standard macro as well) great for close ups, i can get a perfect picture of my finger print! defenatly gets my vote for best value for money, allthough it is a little over $500  i got mine from harvey norman for $650 and the guy even through in a free bag, parallelinported.co.nz is good but harvey norman managed to beat there price and i got to play around with all the cameras before i decided which best suited my needs.
