  1. Yes. They are cichlids, so they may find a little territory they'll defend, but never found them to be a problem.
  2. Judging by the size of that white one, they're happy! or at least jolly.
  3. Good information, but please Conch state your sources and give credit to the author.
  4. haha or a hidden joke perhaps (I can't verify that though)
  5. Yeah most plecos I've owned (commons etc) were covered in spikes, at least once large. You don't really want to touch them. Once out of the water some will just stay in your hand, and do the play dead thing, others will flip out. Another trick is to turn them upside down then they're in your hand. Bristlenose are fun too, whenever I go near my males they bring out their collection of spikes to scare me off, and later, to poke me.
  6. Nope, brine shrimp doesn't last that long. Only real choices are a) ask a trustworthy person to feed the fry, b) get an autofeeder for their tank, c) just leave them to it. Putting in heaps of food just before you leave is a bad idea because it'll spoil in 24 hours, brine shrimp may take a day to die first, but after the 2nd day the water would start getting nasty.
  7. Thanks coelacanth Nobody else breeding these? Don't make me write an AquariumWorld article  hehe When they're in full colour they're amazing. I added a bunch of Cabomba and I guess this activated either spawning activity or more comfort as the males went almost black and did more fin displays, fabulous wee fish.
  8. Yeah I saw these guys in a LFS, congrats on your purchase! I almost bought some too, crazy looking guys.
  9. Honestly the new sensation for small tanks e.g. 20L is the celestrial pearl danio (the fish formally known as the galaxy rasbora). They're awesome, and can be bred without assistance in <20L tanks with just some moss, and maybe some baby food? They're tiny and are definately the perfect fish for the smaller aquaria. Example pic, http://www.aquabase.org/member/album/pictures/0630DA72BC0BCFEAE849DD8CF7422811_full.jpg Linky winky: http://www.thetropicaltank.co.uk/Fishindx/celestial_pearl_danio.htm
  10. This only happens at acidic pH levels though right? or am I wrong on that Edit: Great place to read about ammonia in aquaria http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/water/ammonia.htm
  11. Just put a small heater in it, set it as low as possible. Just want to stop it from going under 18 degrees for Borneos, or say 22 degrees for bristlenose/plecs.
  12. Yeah as Ian said, might want to sort something out for the fry tanks, otherwise will be fine.
  13. Ammonium shows up on ammonia tests. Using products like 'Ammo-Lock' etc to convert ammonia to harmless ammonium means the bacteria have nothing/less to eat, so they don't develop, so the tank doesn't cycle quite right if at all. Depending on your fish load and their value alters my recommendations, but I'd be looking towards removing the ammonia remover/locker and letting the tanks filter cycle (bacteria to grow).
  14. Email it to me using the email button below this post, I'll host'n post
  15. I've bought one, and I liked it. Much better than the Shark ADVs etc, suction cups are good, and they come with a variety of output options, good flow too. Like all internal filters, they do clog eventually (because of size limitations) so an external is much better, but if you're going internal, I'm quite a fan of these filters for value for money.
  16. Had to share this story. Was in the garage last night doing crafty things, and noticed my angel fish were laying, but there was two females?? One had chosen to lay their eggs in the corner of the tank, the other female had chosen a filter pipe only a few cm away, and they both like the same male (despite another being available). Anyway each female would lay a stream of eggs, then male would try to fertilise them, then the alternate female would eat them as fast as she could! Was the weirdest thing to watch. For some reason neither female thought the other female was a threat. Talk about a love triangle. (Removed one of the females, let them lay the eggs, and removed the eggs, didn't check for a 2nd set this morning though)
  17. Nice big family you got there! Clowns are awesome
  18. eck do not get chinese algae eaters They a) don't actually help with algae control, and b) end up sucking off the sides of your fish, and c) become aggressive with age. Borneo is interesting, but often small and are low temp, e.g. 18-24. I'm a BN fanboy, standard or gbas, not interesting on their own, but when your tank is full if little miniture bristelnose its an awesome site
  19. My Apistogramma Agasezii often have marks like that. I'm guessing its because they call another cichlids bluff only to find out they actually WILL bite! My little guys bully much larger kribensis, so I can see them getting in trouble.
  20. I think these are an amazing fish, and I want to breed some. I've got two boys and four girls, and am going to be feeding them up Now all sites on the internet seem to agree, they spawn in fine leaved plants, but how do I encourage the spawn? e.g. temps, water depth, any grass? plastic ok or do I need javamoss? Some sites are saying its the same as any other rainbow, but I don't know how to breed rainbows so that didn't help me much! Anyone with info or suggestions or even links to good sites, please reply Thanks again guys and gals, Jono
  21. Yeah I just get mine from the supermarket. They're not for fish, they're for human consumption, but clown loaches (and many other species) think they're fantastic. My fire eel and clown knife eat it too.
  22. NB: thats 180kg pushing down, which is spread evenly over the base, thats not how much force each side is put under.
  23. I used to feed bits of prawn/shrimp ripped up. Put it in in the morning, they'll eat at it all day, whatever is left remove at night (probably none). They LOVE it (well my old school did)
  24. I have bigger tanks than that (extra 20-30L or so) in 6mm, but they are braced (strip at either end, and a wider strip in the centre). Then they have braces along each edge at the bottom. Never had any problems whatsoever with them.
