Yes, totally agree, spastics should use razor wire.

Have tried clove oil in the past. It takes ages, and stinks. A quick whack and there isn't time for any stress or pain.
-
Don't really want to send, I work 8-5 in the city. Too awkward for me to bag him up and drop off at the couriers. If you can work out someway to get somebody to pick him up then I've got no problems with it.

To put it lightly, its f****d. I'm going with bent spine. Not suprisingly nobody at all is interested in taking him on, so I've passed on orders (with instructions) to have him put out of his misery/uncomfortable situation. Using the instant method of a wack on the head. Its the quickest and least stressful option. Being my pet there is no way I could do it, hence why I've passed detailed instructions on to somebody else to do it (who isnt gushy over animals). If he wasn't going to get bigger I'd keep him, but a fish that grows to over a metre long and already has a bent spine this early, growing him out is a BAD idea.

Yeah for sure, anyone who wants one I'd happily give him away. Currently eats defrosted prawns and bloodworms. Not aggressive unless a large fish is near his gave and you see the mouth open as he gently pushes them out. Used to get excited and swim out at feeding time, now because its harder to swim he does this less. Might be an interesting fish eater for breeders with unwanted stock too.

Its not hunched, its bent. Its also causing him to keep his mouth slightly open. Simiilar to this example: http://www.3reef.com/forums/attachments/fish-disease/3389d1076381371-fish-bent-please-help-img00005.jpg If it was just some small fish I'd let it live, but its going to grow to a metre long here, thats too much money and investment to put in to what will become an eyesore.

Thats a good idea, as it also insulates the tank, saving you coin.

rocks made from foam, epoxy and sand (lots of pics)
SpidersWeb replied to owen's topic in DIY Section
I'd say they would. In the wild angelfish lay eggs on leaves, mine for example will hunt out anything long, fairly solid, and bright green, usually my filter hoses Amazing work owen, thanks for sharing the process too! -
Chemicals/driftwood probably wouldn't help. If pH is above 8 it means the water is quite hard, making dropping the pH very difficult. You'd need to change the water bit by bit to slowly drop it, but first you need to find why its going so high. There would have to be something increasing the hardness/pH. Coral, shells, bird grit, lime etc will all do this. Also recommend doing your tests again, and making sure the containers are 100% clean before taking the next sample (I've made that mistake a few times, got some crazy results).

Add more It prevents the one-on-one problem, and will reduce territorial issues. Assuming your tank is big enougn. Or remove them, redecorate, and readd both at the same time.
-
Yeah do not keep angels in a 38 litre tank for more than about a month (assuming they're babies). It'll stunt their growth. Would be like raising a human in a closet.
-
You can buy just blue or just black, but the easiest way is to paint the back of your tank (on the outside). Good idea to do it before its set up though.

Because he looks rediculous, nobody wants to see a metre long clown knife thats in a constant S shape. He's also less energetic which I imagine is because its much harder for him to swim now. Looking at him just makes me feel sad and thats not really why I have fish. Looking on other forums it seems that it is likely a physical injury and unlikely to fix itself. If anybody wants him they're welcome, but over the next few weeks I'll have to put him to sleep somehow (clove oil?). Really sad about it but I can't fix him. In the wild he'd get eaten and it'd be done with. Lesson being that young clown knives are delicate, and structures where they might get stuck should be avoided at all times.

help with malawis,is this something to worry about?
SpidersWeb replied to Anna_&_Chris's topic in Diseases
Doing that generally isn't a good idea. Try to keep water changes below 40% except in emergencies. Because of possible chlorine, temperature changes, and pH changes you *may* have a nitrite spike from a loss in filter bacteria. With Africans you should be careful to not swing the pH too much anyway. Test for nitrite. If you've got 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite then keep an eye out for white spot, otherwise things should settle on their own. If the white spots start appearing more and more, then you may have white spot, but hopefully thats not the case. -
Bettas vary depending on personality. I'd expect a female fighter to be fine with that combination but remember 'small angels' aren't small for long! You'd need to trial it, if it doesn't work out you'll need to rehome the fish or return it to the petstore (if your local lets you).

Overnight courier works fine. Drop off just before they close, on a Mon, Tue or Wed. No problem. Never use ice cream containers tho, always use proper fish bags inflated with air. Otherwise the fish will die, I know this because I tried it once.

Unfortunately my clown knife (~12cm long) has turned in to an S shape. He *can* straighten up but does so only to swim and its very rare. Was hoping it was temporary but its been two weeks now. He's eating happily, no problems with other fish in the tank. Being fed 99% prawns from the freezer, kept at around 26C, looks healthy except for the bends Any ideas? My guess is we'd need to put him down, but hoping somebody here has some ideas.

If you only have one or two then what I do is leave them to it, if you want them to grow big you'll need to keep them feed daily. Algae chips/wafers are great but what I find works better for me is courgette, put a slice on a fork, drop it in, change daily. They'll love you for it

Trouble with saving the fry is it never ends. I have at least a hundred of them, and whats worse is they're so hard to catch I have at least 5 in every tank now. Have to wait for them to get larger so I can catch them. But as for saving fry there are two methods. First method - mildly effective - save at least 30-40 or more - get a piece of hose, and syphon the babies out in to a bucket, then transfer this bucket of tank water in to a new tank, add heater + air filter and you're away. Feed them crushed flake, and you'll have little stripey convicts begging for food in no time. Second method - painfully effective - could result in hundreds of convicts - syphon some tank water in to a fresh aquarium, move eggs in to new aquarium, keep as vertical as possible (to prevent debris from landing on them) and use a nearby airstone to keep water circulating over the eggs (do not let bubbles touch eggs). If you are LUCKY some of the eggs will fungus  If you're crazy and want to improve numbers further, options to try are adding meth blue, covering the tank, manually removing any fungus, and using temperature matched fresh water instead of tank water. After 2-3 days they'll be wrigglers and take care of themselves, few days later they'll be swimming around looking for food (crushed flake works).

With angels its quite easy if they're fully grown, or near to it. Females are noticeably fatter and rounder in side-on-profile, and if in 'heat' have a large round 'thing' that sticks out below. Males are skinny, and have a short spikey 'thing', normally visible when near a female carrying eggs. Males also have a more angular profile. Sorry I'm at work and can't look up the correct terms and can't photo my own fish for ID. Hope that helps a little though. If they're babies you can't tell acurately IMO. With adults I haven't incorrectly identified angel sex since I worked out how to do it.

My Haliea sticks to the tank great, makes no noise, came with multiple output options etc I've been very impressed by it for the price. With the AquaOne it'll likely get quieter with age too, I've got an old 104F running one of my tanks, its about a year old and runs silent and powerful but it is held up by the cord/rocks because the cups have long gone. If your filter was purchased in under 30 days then yes you can return it, talk to them first though, either on the phone or by email. If you can spare a few more ponies then I'd recommend just bighting the bullet and getting a proper filter. The 104 does 1200L/hr from memory, so look at either the AquaOne CF1000, CF1200, Jebo 815 or Jebo 819. CF1200/819's are normally around the $150 mark. Pretty sure petplanet do the AquaOne cannisters for a that price. Cannisters are much better because they dont clog up like internals do, quieter as they're better insulated, and hold much more media.

Black + Black = Whack? Angelfish Breeding
SpidersWeb replied to SpidersWeb's topic in General Breeding
Heya, Not for a while, the number of offspring is very low I'm hoping that using the new female with the white male will give better results. That pair is in with a young clown knife at the moment, and breeding chances seem slim until I work out my tank situation a bit better. The black + black combo netted a total of 6 fry (free swimming for 3 days now). But this female does regularly lay every 2 weeks. Am considering dividing my tanks up for breeding. If you want those Kribensis you saw when you visited, you can have them btw. Should have offered them when you visited. Great fish, just taking up space I dont have at the moment. -
Personally I dont start worrying about floor weight until the total weight gets to around the tonne mark. Best thing you can do is make a small platform to distribute the weight along the floor, I doubt you'll have trouble with 500kg. Thats basically 4 overweight men. Only bad story I've heard so far was a friend who had a 450 litre tank on the 2nd floor of the house, overtime the house slightly moved causing things like doorways needing to be filed on the bottom floor. Nothing disasterous though.
