  1. Fish will tolerate 0.25ppm @ pH 7.5 I've found, but anything more caused gills to burn. If your pH is 7 or below it has a much less toxic effect on the fish (but do not use pH adjusting chemicals). Ammonia and Nitrite should always be 0 unless the benefical bacteria hasn't got a big enough population (e.g. new tank, sudden changes in tank stock or feed, filter turned off too long). If it goes to 0.5 or higher you should do partial water changes. Ian has asked the real question here, how long has the tank been setup?
  2. It'll be either: a) bacterial bloom, normally goes away in a few days, I've found the tank also smells a bit off You can use B-Clear etc for this one, but I wouldn't, anything that kills bacteria will likely damage your good bacteria. This is likely when too much food is added, if it was doing this with no fish food, then its unlikely what it is. b) small stuff floating in water, e.g. didn't clean gravel before setting up aquarium, this should settle by itself but you can use P-Clear to help make the particles clamp up, its cheap and at your LFS. I'd go with B at first impression. I'm assuming your filter is on 24hrs, and you dont change more than 30% of the water at a time, and no fish food is left lying on the tank floor for more than a minute or so max, and the tank doesn't smell.
  3. Don't have any agasezii on the go by any chance?
  4. Base should be the same size as the tank or larger depending on what finish you want. Best to buy a piece of wood thats a little too big to allow for cutting errors etc If its too small when you get it home, just attach it at the front, nobody will see the gap at the back. Can paint it with whatever you want, you could try and find a good quality sealer if you want it to last a long time (as plywood can bend overtime when exposed to moisture). Hope that helps?
  5. And being capitated with FNZAS is better than being decapitated by the FNZAS.
  6. Nope, makes you a sensible person, but I would have loved some Oscar fry from that pair
  7. Congratulations Do you raise many of the young? Great looking parents.
  8. What he said. If you change more than 30% make sure to use water ager. Don't change more than 50%. How long has the tank been setup for? Sounds like a nitrite spike to me. Test results will confirm, your local pet store should be able to do one for free or only a few $$.
  9. Jebo R338's come with 400lhr pumps. This is dumb, so was going to do a kiwi fix up job, but need a small powerhead that does about 150L/hr. Ideal budget would be $20-30. Any idea who might sell pumps like this?
  10. Bristlenose eat it. If your bristlenose is too small get some more. Apple snails will just eat all your plants, and likely to go for a walk if you dont use a lid.
  11. When they get a bit older they'll slowly become a problem. They're cute when young, but annoying adults.
  12. Doesn't need to be perfectly flat, great if it is, but don't worry too much. That tank is 1.2m by 0.45 by 0.45, which is 243 litres. About the equivilent of 3-4 average men standing up. Not quite as serious as you think when you put it in perspective.
  13. Get them a lady friend. That helps.
  14. Breeding pair of Jack Dempseys got dropped off at hutt pets not long ago. Not sure if they are still there.
  15. Thoroughly recommend getting some NZ Brine Shrimp, I beleive AMAZONIAN on here has some for sale, or might know where to get it. The stuff you buy in those little test tubes with the black lids I've found to be frustrating to hatch, overpriced, and sometimes impossible to hatch. The NZ ones are fantastic, and that's an understatement, you'll get the bright orange pulp you should get when harvesting these guys. With that out of the way, the upside down coke bottle is what I've always used. Don't forget to add a generous amount of baking soda to the water mix, a pH above 8 made a big difference. I used the coffee filters (like $5 from supermarket) to seperate the bbs from the saltwater.
  16. Yeah was just joking around thinking it might be a good idea, as there isn't as much information about these guys as there is other species, so I think people would benefit from it. Stimpy, great links, thanks! Stu, awesome stuff My fish are actually in Upper Hutt, only about 2 blocks from your place. Thanks heaps for that write up, just the kind of local and experienced knowledge I was after!
  17. Make sure its Flourish Excel. Flourish is a trace element fertiliser, Flourish Excel is a carbon supplement Otos are an algae eating fish, prices seem to be $14-18ea and they're small. http://badmanstropicalfish.com/profiles/profile76.html
  18. Yeah hair algae blows. I'm told that Oto's eat it, but I haven't tried it. Using Flourish Excel helps a lot, and so does pouring boiling water over any ornaments that have it growing on them. It normally grows due to an imbalance, finding what is out of balance can be near impossible sometimes though. I recommend flourish excel though, only thing I ever used that worked, and oh god the plants grew like CRAZY, was awesome, expensive though
  19. Red Devils are a pretty cool fish. Ones I've seen in NZ are pure white, or a dark yellow, but full of personality.
  20. Just wanted to share this with you all in case it explains a case of 'missing fish' for some of you. My partner has a Jebo R338, in a tank with danios, bristlenose, and some blue rams. Now in these tanks flow is very high (400L/hr on a 38L tank), so to rest the danios would sleep near the filter pump. The filter pump connection where the suction pipe attaches to, has a small hole. I haven't pulled it apart to identify exactly where but its definately there. Obviously used as a backup to prevent the filter from stalling in the event of a pipe blockage. (and yes the suction pipe is attached properly) Anyway, the current isn't very strong, but it is strong enough to slowly move in a sleeping danio. Until I recently blocked this small hole, it had consumed 4 danios, and one baby bristlenose. First time we noticed it, I found a zebra danio tail sticking out. Since then other fish have disappeared at night time, without leaving so much as a trace. Definately a job for the hot glue gun.
  21. Yep. Sounds like a female to me too Egg laying fish don't get pregnant but the female does carry roe (unfertilised eggs), and when fed well this roe builds up and makes them look a little fat. Completely normal part of being a female danio
  22. haha good stuff. Was just worried you'd done a cut and paste job, but obviously mistaken. Back on topic, if its only affecting the one fish, try to do the treatment in a seperate tank where-ever possible. If it is genuinely white spot (ich) (which it sounds like it isnt) then you'd need to treat the main aquarium and all your fish will likely have it or develop it quickly. If you want to upload a photo, you need to use a site like photobucket.com etc, then paste the link to it here. Being in the US you'll have a larger range of medications available than us in NZ.
  23. Oh my apologies! Good work!!
