    Faethery Algae?

I'd love clown loaches! But I've been told they're best in groups >5, and that equates to about $60...

    Faethery Algae?

Sorry to hear that peety - maybe I'll pay Hollywoods a visit next weekend (Payday YAY)... Bristlenose Plecos aye? These aren't the pleco's that most "office tanks" have in them are they? I saw one of those at Hollywoods and it was MONSTROUS... I'm talking a good foot long, and the guy said it was only about a quarter of its full size... I don't want one of those monsters in my tank!! So I should go on a genocide against snails in my tanks?

    Faethery Algae?

The tank doesn't receive any direct sunlight, gets plenty of indirect though, as the sun seems to like peeking into my bedroom  yeah, I've been a bit lax on the old water changes recently, didn't want to interrupt the treatment for Ich... I'll get onto that as soon as I get home from work today Would the snails be any good for getting rid of the algae??
  4. I've just noticed in my tropical tank, that there's a feathery kind of growth on my tank... It's quite hard to see, I only noticed it 'cause I was hunting around to find snails (I seem to have an recent immigration to my tank). Actually, now that I think about it, I don't even know what kind of snails they are either! The biggest one is about 5mm from widest point to point. The shell seems almost see-through, but not quite. I noticed that I had one, then there were three, and now there's about 10  Maybe they were all in there, but just too small for me to see! Back to the algae, it's kind-of light brown, maybe 1 - 2mm in length, and it's attached to the glass in my tank, mostly on the front face, but there is some on the side faces, but considerably less. Any ideas? :-)

    Quarantine Tank??

so just a tank with a filter & heater/thermometer? What a boring tank lol Would I just have one (expendable) fish in there to keep the tank "live"? Would a cheap sponge filter be sufficient?

    Quarantine Tank??

Thanks for the info guys, But what will I actually *need* in a Qtank? I just want some basics to set one up...
  7. Hey guys, I've now got a 26L tank sitting around doing nothing in particular. I was considering turning it into a quarantine tank, and putting it down in my garage. What am I going to need? Presumably thermometer, filter etc etc, as it'd be for both tropical and coldwater fish, so I'd probably be keeping it around 23°C and pumping it up a bit when I need to put a troppo fish in there? Anything else important that I'm missing? Also - what is a good substance to really clean out an old tank? This one was getting quite manky, which is why I bought a new one (which was also bigger), and it's just sitting on the balcony, empty, getting plenty of sunshine It does need a good scrub though, as it's got plenty of scum on the sides...

    ICK!!

The Ich is still there With treating every 3 days, I treated on Monday, so do I treat again today, or tomorrow??? Maybe I'll put the temp up a bit, it's only sitting around 25°C atm...

    ICK!!

yeah, I've just treated both my tanks Hopefully it clears up soon, otherwise I'll have to make ANOTHER trip into Newmarket to buy more Ich treatment!
  10. Ira! behave! Then I wouldn't be able to keep MY fish! AND - I'd be out of my job - I work in the callcentre for Mercury Energy

    ICK!!

I think it's water conditions... What's the best temp for a Siamese? The tank is sitting around 26-27°C at the moment, I brought it down to that about a week or so ago, because my room is getting incredibly warm and I didn't want poached fish! I've got 11 neon tetras and a peppered cat in there as well, so I'm hoping to find a temp they all enjoy.. I also just recently (like, yesterday) replaced the carbon filter in my Millenium 1000 wet-dry trickle filter... Maybe I changed it a bit too late :-? I've just doused both tanks with Blue Circle White Spot Cure. It's turned my tank a lovely shade of very light blue... Maybe I should keep this stuff in there all the time! I've also pulled the carbon filter out, so it doesn't steal all the fish medicine  I doused my new tank, (coldwater, for the minnows, I just bought a new tank for them) becuase I've put one of the plants that was in my tropical tank into the coldwater tank, as it's a taller tank, and the grassthing looks nicer in there (I don't know what it's called, but it looks like a few strands of cutty grass) Hopefully Mitsy will survive!!!!

    ICK!!

My siamese fighter (Mitsy) has Ick!!!! He looks like someone's been chasing him with a salt cellar!! How dangerous is this? He's still in the tank with the other tropical fish, as I don't have a quarantine tank to move him to... He's moping around the tank, sitting near the bottom a lot... Here's hoping he holds (what alliteration!!) on till tonight, so I can get to the pet store after work for some anti-ick stuff... Just needed to share! Nik

    Peppered Catfish

you talking about baby peppered cats peety?? I'd love a couple! I've decided that once my current spawn of WCMM has matured, I'm gonna transfer them all to the tropical tank, coz the other tank just isn't big enough! (26L)
  14. Caryl - he's in with 12 neons & a peppered cat. They all pretty much ignore him And yeah, he seems VERY tame, came up to have a look when I brought some food to the tank, the other fish scarper as soon as I enter the room!! The lady @ Hollywood fish farm warned me against getting some bumblebee thingees, I've forgotten what they were  But yes, he seems very content, even though he *is* boring to watch lol
  15. YAY I just bought one! How pretty!! He's pretty much all blue, with just a hint of red. What's best for these guys? The neons thought he was fascinating for a couple of minutes, and now they pretty much ignore him. Catfish doesn't seem too impressed with him though!! I've bought some Nova tabs for them as well, but the fighting fish doesn't seem to want to eat at that depth, so I'm feeding him flakes??
  16. You mean that it makes the water go cloudy for a little while? Would adequate filtration clear that up??? Just my two cents worth
  17. Does anybody own these fish? They're so good! A tad worried though, I only have one, I've dubbed it a 'he' out of simplicity (and coz boys are better! ). He seems to be really really really energetic! It's almost like he's on speed of some kind... Is this normal?? I was under the impression that they would be the shy retiring type...
  18. they're a bit small @ 1 day!! I just want to know how long it takes until they're a reasonable size
  19. How long does it normally take for the fry to reach a suitable size to be moved to other tanks to live? I want to move maybe 10 or so into my tropical tank, and I have a few friends that would be interested in taking as many fish off my hands as they could get away with It's going to get interesting, because if say, half of the fry survive, the tank they're all in is going to be hugely overstocked lol - it's only 26L!!!
  20. I just couldn't find anything in the handbook about when I should be changing lol But after a rinse or two, the water is still crystal clear, so I'm not going to worry
  21. hahahahaha! Errrr..... maybe
  22. Has anybody got any experience with these filters?? I've got one going in my tropical tank, which is 56L, moderately planted, with 12 neons & a peppered cat, and it's only been going about a month, and the carbon filter thingee seems to be really grubby already! I've given it a rinse under the tap, which has cleaned it quite a bit... I was just wondering, what sort of timeframe should the carbon filter last for? I don't really want to pay $14 every month for a new one if I can help it. Other than that, this is a brilliant filter! When I first plugged it in, the water was extremely murky, and within an hour, it was crystal clear!!!
  23. I've been trying to get in touch with the contact persons that are listed in the Clubs section here, but haven't been getting any responses... Does anybody know who I can get in touch with? I live in the Ellerslie area of Auckland, so something fairly local would be the best.... Cheers! Nik
  24. Ooooh, that sounds good Oh yeah, I bought a tube of Liquid food for the fry, and they seem to love it - almost as much as the adults do lol! And I think maybe even the fry are pushing more babies out! There are SOOO many babies!!!!! I think that even if half of them die, I'm going to have one seriously overstocked tank.... maybe 5 or so can go to the tropical tank, and the rest can get sold/given away... Anybody in the Auckland area interested if my babies make it through the first month or so??
  25. hehehe stock troughs??? Sorry love, I live in the suburban garden.... I don't even have a lawn!! Yeah, the pet store mentioned Liquifry for both egglayers & livebearers... Obviously I'd be using the livebearer Tetramin E.... will keep it in mind and if anything goes wrong, I'll blame Caryl - she started it!! hehehe
