  1. Sounds like Aragonite you are changing to? When we changed over our Malawi tank, we syphoned all the water into two huge drums.. and transferred fish over into drums, ran air and heater and kept the filters running on drums... ran hose into the tank as we syphoned old gravel then emptied, took old gravel out, tank sparkling after this long process  then moved the 6fter into our room, layed down the rock work and once all sussed put the freshly rinsed Aragonite in the tank, started pumping original water back into the tank and hooked the 2 big externals back up and we were away, fish as good as gold. Good Luck and btw, Aragonite is a stunning substrate! Mekhaela
  2. Thanks very much for that , hope you don't get in trouble either
  3. It's funny because JBL pleco chips are the ones that my plecs prefer... the odd one takes its time to sink but doesn't take long.. Mekhaela
  4. Oh noticed Taupo wasn't mentioned, hubby and I stopped through there on our travels and he has a nice tidy fish set up, with some nice fish when we were last in there. Mekhaela
  5. Great info guys.. thanks Cyberfin - I haven't even got around to doing a proper breeding set up for them as yet, someting that is in the pipeline but have had other projects at the moment that have kept us busy enough, Frontosa set up etc and other typical African things lol, however, trying to aim with breeding these plecs is something I would love to do in the near future, aim to try at least   I have noticed mine are alot different in head shape, 2 having huge chunky heads and the other two having more delicate heads.. not sure if thise is a real difference, hopefully its a start anyway. I mean the right sexes are needed to even attempt huh  I have found they don't care much for the Pleco chips either, they always seem to be coming out of their hidey areas when blood worms and frozen dapnia are giving to others occupying the tank at the moment... 6. Beautiful pics cameron, our Fron young look exactly like miniatures of your ones, markings etc.. Mekhaela

    Cichlids

That is great that you have no problem with it, as I stated above it CAN have other trace elements etc in it, depending on where it has come from. Mekhaela

    Cichlids

Hi There According to information that we have studied, lime chip is another form of calcium carbonate, but sometimes it can contain traces of heavy metals ie. copper etc... depending on where it comes from. We stick with Aragonite (marble chip) It can be found in Auckland at roughly $40 per 25kg. That is the substrate in our above pics of our Malawi tank. Mekhaela
  9. Hiya We have 4 of these guys, looking at breeding them also, however, its going to be one of those challenging projects me thinks   But it is something I want to aim towards doing, so can only but try and keep fingers crossed (hoping things are done correctly enough for them to do their thing) Mekhaela
  10. Our lot have all got 6 bars, and well marked in regards to straight bars etc.. Yet to get some more recent pics. Mekhaela

    Cichlids

Hiya We keep rather a few Africans, we use Aragonite as substrate, white and rather classy in our set ups, also helps buffer. Even tho light substrate can wash the fish out a bit, this hasn't happened in our case, our fish are as bright as anything and look great... Good Luck and keep us posted on your choice Here are a couple of pics of the substrate, we have only just recently shifted the tank to our bedroom and set it up again, yet to top the tank up as you can see and it needs some fine tuning  Mekhaela
  15. LOL   Love the way you put that last bit

  18. Hi ludimac It should be exactly the same as the 980 however different pad sizes.. Single spray bar over black pads, which is over a sponge pad then over your noodles. Then there is the plate. Hope this is of some help

I am currently raising up some Lithobates fry from my girls at the moment, totally easy raising and they have grown like weeds... Hardy little blighters, well they are Africans of course
  20. Yep we are the ones that bought Angus off you He is absolutely gorgeous, and is in the 8ft tank out at my hubbys work... Everyone loves him, hes coming back home soon tho, miss him and my Jack Dempsey pair so making space for them to come back  I have never met an Oscar quite like Angus, even tho Oscars as they get older are reasonably laid back, I don't think I have quite met an Oscar as laid back as Angus  He reminds me of Sal off the Sopranos with that crooked mouth so at times hes called Sal.. 8) And yeah wouldn't it be great if MAF came up with a list of safe newbies that could come into the country
