    Newbie to FNZAS

Welcome! Sounds like you will have the breeding bug very soon
  3. There is alot of that happening off and on.. we hadn't seen the fish in question so when he rang to ask what they had brought in as Blue Melos, he was told Johanni, maybe because that's what they had in as the last lot so they just presumed thats what this lot was.... There is only one supplier that lists scientific names and he also states what they are to be fed, pretty thorough really compared to others.. Mekhaela
  4. Oh the Royal Blues are stunning! Have you got any pics Dogmatix of your Demasoni , Royal Blue tank?
  5. Ahhhhhh righty o then ..
  6. Oh... so were you referring to me or the fish then aye
  7. I think the correct spelling is.... "Africans.."
  8. To the comment about Marine is where it stops... hmmmm not so sure about that one  We HAD marine and have moved on to make space for more species of Africans  Definately hooked on the freshwaters... even tho Marine are beautiful also and we did enjoy the tank, the Africans came first in the end.
  9. without Sci names I meant   In regards to Johanni juveniles, I have Johanni young often, they stay yellow to a certain point but the males start turning quite early... females of course staying the shade of yellow. These are still quite small when turning.
  10. That's the problem when they don't bring them in with Sci names huh... shame really... as the last lot they did have in as Blue Melos were Johanni, There must be a few of these newbies out there as they are no longer on the lists, so where are they all people so we can have a good squizz at them
  11. Jasmine - Isn't it great when you have a family member that is in a particular trade.. And that's a nice size tank to start out with Mekhaela
  12. Hi Jasmine My hubby is a cabinet maker, hes made a few tank cabinets, Rimu. Depending on what way you are going with filtration, the tank stand would need to accomodate. Not sure what you are using as tank stand materials.. solid timber, just steel frame with surround of some sort? Keep in mind that if you decide to go sump , you will need a lid of some sort.. my hubby made a beautiful Rimu stand for someone and they didn't put a lid on it and the water sprayed all up the insides of the tank stand and of course, the heat and moisture, you can imagine what it did to the timber! Wood moves something terrible! Holes in the back of the cladding on the tank stand is obviously needed for hosing etc.. and a decent height is also a good option, gives you room to play with, enough clearance for getting into fiddle with sump and externals, whichever way you decide to go Sometimes people have a steel structure inside tank stand for extra strength, if you go with a rocky African tank, this is a good idea. Can't wait to see your progress when you start set up
  13. We have a 8ft tank (900 litres) Frontosa tank and a 6ft (700 litre) Malawi Tank.. Have yet to get some pics of Frontosa tank, it has just finished cycling, left it a while.. and here is a pic of our Malawi set up, still hadn't been topped up after the change over and had some fine tuning to be done with rock work etc.. And a pic of some of our grow ons... I am another thats not competitive over tank size, as long as we are happy having big enough tanks to cater for our kids   Mekhaela
  14. Hey stompa Don't shut up about the sump idea, they are great thing to have.. Yes the con with the external filters is the hosing, however, easy enough to disguise if you really put your mind to it, our Malawi tank you don't even notice them really.. just a bit of fiddling around to get things how ya want them Mekhaela
  15. Hiya Jasmine Rather a few people use bubble walls in their tanks for effect and of course water movement.. Frenchys suggestion of having 2 forms of filtration is good tho, as if one fails at least you have a backup. Mekhaela
  16. Oh that must have been devastating Poor guy and Frontosas.. We always like the idea of 2 filters aswell, our African tanks are big tanks, so we run two cannister filters, and with the Malawi we have a powerhead in the tank, breaking the surface. That is one fear we have always had, spray bars dropping under the surface... so yeah, pays to have back up of some sort. Mekhaela
  17. Hiya We used to keep rather a few Suris, definately the extensions and colouration is the key to difference in sex. we keep Jurapari still, and I have a pair, the female who is slightly smaller and not as bright in colour often hassles the male in the same way your Suri's are behaving, she often crowds him and wavers all over the place, he at times is often hen pecked  Mekhaela
  18. Just wondering if there was any more feedback on the recent Blue Melo case? Someone said they had a Blue female holding? Mekhaela
  19. Definately different ideas on brands, comes down to personal experience with each brand and preference In our Malawi tank, we have Peacocks, Ahli, Electric Yellows and Johanni, they all get on surprisingly well, Peacocks were a bit scrappy but the display boys I have are girless now so things are rather harmonious  Mekhaela
  20. What a great piece of wood, definately go with the bigger tank!  What a good excuse to get a new tank, might try and find a piece too big for our 8fter and see if one would be allowed to expand lol
  21. Definately go with cannisters if you can, great filtration, Jebo are good enough but if you are able to spend a little more I would go Aqua One of Fluval, we have Jebo, Aqua One and Fluval, and the latter 2 would be my choice above Jebo anyday. When it comes to heaters, we stick with Jagar and Aqua One. As much filtration as you can with Africans Mekhaela

    Hi everyone

Hi Emily Welcome to the forum, this is a great place We keep Harlequin Rasbora in our planted community... they are stunning in a school, we used to have about 50 schooling in our 6ft tank when it was a community... definately a fish I would always consider.. Mekhaela
  23. Oh yeah, glad Frenchy mentioned the feeding... 8) even tho we changed over the best way possible, with most water and original externals running before transfer.. we still even limited their feeds over the next few days.. just had them on light feeds... wanted to be safer than sorry.. Mekhaela
