  1. had mine under a halide and grew out of the water?? You dont want to sell some of the young ones do you or swap for amazon swords
  2. Flourish excell works great, be careful with the SAE as once the algae is gone they may like your plants (JAVA MOSS) in my case.
  3. Ive had this a couple of times for no apparant reason usually just leve it and fresh leaves start to come through
  4. wish I had my camera today as my clownknife and large female con went for the same bit of food and half the con ended up in the clowns mouth (but it got away) NICE PIC
  5. have seen a hydroponic setup at a vegeshop and thought about using it as a filter on a tank? does anyone know if it will work or are the ferts needed anti fish? if aquatic plants grow with just the nutrients from fish poo then would veges? LOL Any ideas
  6. currently based at honiara on the beach near the airport but went diving at vasale and selwyn west of honiara but not on the west coast where I was meant to go
  7. Well Im a fresh keeper but am currently in the Solman Is (for work ) and have had a couple of days snorkeling, with all sorts of corals fish ect (even saw lots of Nemos -as my daughter would say) sorry to say but I ate a few fish that would be amazing in a tank and had to stand on (and break ) a few corals-with one going into my foot well now I want a salt tank- AGAIN-will have to see what plans I have when I get home and might cros over my 1000L???? will try to get some photos of the diving/fish (mates underwater camera got water in it  )
  8. Ive got a clown knife with a lrgeish oscarand have no probs they race each othet to the food but never fight the only time I had prob is when I put a breeding pair of cons in-I know bad move thought with 1000l the would stay away from each other- as long as they have enough space and somewhere for the bgk to hide/rest without being disturbed they should be sweet,, would help if you knew if the O was aggressive b4 trying you luck though!

    Otto's

hey sharn how much are they
  10. It is a good tube IMO gives a very natural colour and good specturum range for plants bit pricey compared to the tubes at bunnings unless your getting them at wholesale cost
  11. BUMP Put a few Java ferns in my planted, and my 1000L and both lots have turned brown-like the leaves are rotting  the only place I seem to be able to get the stuff to grow is in the planted part of my 1000Ls sump and the tank I have setup for my baby amazon swords to grow out ---no ferts lots of fish anyone got any more ideas/experiences
  12. red all the way through and has a couple of bumps know
  13. will try to get a photo when I come back from whangamata, the whole fin seems to be red, the pectoral flappy one. Its in with an O some large Plecs 3 jewels 1male 2 females I beleive and a female con, they all get along... just had a thought I put a few baby cons in as feeders and they hide under te slate rocks ect I think he might have gone for them and (got himself)
  14. my clowns right side fin has gone red (or only noticed its red)?? is this common or a sign of something wrong/damaged???
  15. with all that money gone into a well set up tank 8) I would have thought the fish would have been a little more spectacular (not Platys) no offence to platty lovers-maybe they cant get discus (not the only cool fish) and as already mentioned looks as though plants were just chucked in and yes dark substrate would have been better. Also have to wonder why they didnt use a sump? IMO theyve wasted half a tank could have pushed the background back and used less media and run a sump as well?? but each to there own, I guess once everything is grown and the fish are schooling/breeding (baby plattys as live food) evreything looks natural b4 anyone bites my head off this is all my OPINION
  16. syphoned them when they were younger but now theyre pretty fast  and in a 4 ft 300L tank with lots of amazon swords and other fish, just thought there would be another way  will keep at it with the nets -doesnt matter if a few are left theyll get bigger and be easier to catch and more nutritious for my clown
  17. does anyone have any good ways of catching fry (cons) in a tank that I dont want to strip? baitcatcher? some sort of trap? catching them 1 by 1 has started to wreck the swords and is very time consuming..

or how ever you spell it  I noticed a couple at the beach recently not 100% sure if thats what they were but thats what they looked like, one was pure white and the other purple. was just wondering if its possible to collect these and start a SW tank, Ive got some 14000K 150w MH units lying around so might start playing with SW---once I come back from the solomans where Ill hopefully get to go diving with some wild fish and coral 8) Id use water from there home and some shrimp from the same rock pools ANY ideas
  23. My sump for my 1000L is set up with a danio and a couple of albino cories to feed on any food that gets through the wet dry bio filtration- it also has a light and some plants to help suck up some nutrients. opened it up today to place a little food in there (once a week) and noticed a baby B/N its amazing how tough some fish are it would have had to get past an O, 3jewels, a clown knife, large plecs and a con, over a 70cmish waterfall through my pre filter (is only broken up $2 shop body loafers) through the bioballs ect and into the sump. I didnt even know any of my BN were breeding or they would have gone in there own tank, but theres no way of catching them know..

    filter wool

I use old pillows (good excuse to get new nicer pillows) and just rinse half out at a time when they need cleaning. Theyre a big bacterial area as well as a fine filter and you dont want to upset your bacterial filtration by replacing/washing the whole lot at once.
