  1. Interesting replies. I think I won't bother for a while and see how it goes.
  2. I just ran out of my Red Sea Coral Trace. Deliberating whether it's worth replacing. Thought I'd get a show of hands of who doses trace elements, and if so what brand?
  3. For the DIY inclined http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=587186&perpage=25&pagenumber=1
  4. I know, but it's an interesting concept though. Where would one draw the line between dosing 'required' elements or dosing something that gives you monster corals. A few times I've looked at my insulin pen and wondered what a couple of mils to the tank would do. FEED ME SEYMOUR!!
  5. And for good reason too. Do a search for 'GH Gut' to see the impact it's had on modern body-building. Nasty stuff! I'll pass thanks, would rather have an 'average' tank. What's next, insulin, steroids? Or maybe we'll have to start classifying our tanks as 'clean' or 'juiced'

Often wondered if that's a good idea or not. Anyone know how well these things keep? Good idea to feed my fish something that's been sitting in the freezer for 6 months?
  7. I was pretty lucky. Funny thing about this hobby, spending a fortune does not mean you'll have the best tank ever. Cutting curners though is a recipe for disaster. Moral of the story, spend wisely
  8. Speaking for myself, I found automating my calcium and alkilinity supplementation to have a huge impact on my tank. Manual dosing works very well as others have shown (Fay eg.), but for me though I just wasn't getting results. Maybe I just wasn't as consistent with my manual dosing as I would have liked. At the time I considered balling method vs CA reactor. Too be honest I would have gone balling, but a well priced reactor popped up on trademe and I got it. Initial expenses for both methods were about the same from my research. All up I spend: $350 - Brand new Aqua Medic 1000 reactor (with media) $150 - S/H 6.7 kg CO2 cylinder (c/o Wasp) $150 - Tunze Co2 regulator $xxx - Bubble counter + non return valve This would be considered cheap for the setup given what it is. Been running it for about 3 months now and the impact on my tank has been staggering. If you're so inclined, a CA reactor is exteremly simple to DIY. If I ever have to add another chamber I'll DIY it. Just bought an RO unit, so can't comment on them really. There have been minor issues with my tank that correlate to using tap water (cyano, hair algae) but have just been putting up with it. Cheers, Bubs!
  9. Heck yeah, may give us 'newbies' a chance to get some coral growth going
  10. Could well just be a marketing gimmick, but still looks interesting http://www.redseafish.com/Product.asp?dir=y&CatId=98&SubID=68&proID=283
  11. A few of us are pretty keen to get our hands on it. Dogmatix may be able to comment on when it'll be available.
  12. Well there's also the price difference
  13. But you look so young in person Now about those frags
  14. True I do run carbon, should probably change it too now after the weekend's incident. The tap I bought a RO unit on the weekend so will be using that from now on. Have been using Rowaphos to help minimise the impact of plain tapwater. All of the above are fine. Haven't got my logbook with me so can't quote accurate numbers. Also, keep in mind this happened before adding any new water to the tank. I had only scraped that rear glass panel.
  15. Funny you should comment on that as the thought did occur to me. I've been reading through the wetwebmedia toxin section and it's something mentioned there too. I do have some leathers and zoos, but not in the area I worked in. Also the bi-colour blenny went missing a week ago, I would have thought other things would have been affected quicker.
  16. Pretty sure the scraper wasn't used for anything else. Will give it a good clean just to be sure. Whatever it was had to be ingested as not all fish were afftected. No trades people, no pesticides or fly sprays used. Added a bi-colour blenny last week that disappeared after the first night. Didn't think much of it at the time but in hindsight he may have eaten whatever it was. Tank seems fine this morning. Remaining stock are all fine. Still, pretty terrible watching 75% of animals die so quickly.
  17. ... bad things happen very quickly. This is a common saying in our hobby, and I experienced it first hand this morning. Saturdays before breakfast is my usual time for doing my 10% weekly water change. This morning I did a bit of tank house-keeping and also scraped the back pane of the tank where a bit a algae had started to build up. Current theory is that I disturbed some toxic algae by doing this. I had no soap and any deodarant on my body (infact my hands were not even in the tank at all). The scraper used is the same one I use every week. I lost 3 fish in the first 5 minutes, with another fish and shrimp within the following thirty minutes. Corals were not affected. I proceeded to do the water change, thinking it could only make things better. I'm currently prepping more water and will do another large change tomorrow. I've cut my photo period by 2.5 hours, and also covered a section of the tank that got natural sunlight during the afternoons. Any thoughts are welcome. Bubs
  18. Pretty impressive stuff. For me though it's not worth the US$70 shipping fee. For marinedepot orders I use a contact in the States who onships for a small 'donation', usually saves quite a lot of money if time is not an issue.
  19. All that growth, suppose we all have our crosses to bear
  20. I know how much my tank evaporates, so I just run my dosing pump on a timer to top it up.
  21. Hehe, should be interesting to see what it looks like in another year after practicing the 'Leave it alone' system
  22. Hi, I had a brackish tank with a GSP before I went full marine. I spoke to a LFS employee at the time who said that they won't be stocking them anymore as demand wasn't that high. However, they could place special orders if asked to. Go talk to someone at Hollywoods or Jansens to see what they can get you. Worth noting: make sure you pick carefully, my GSP was a little angel up to a point and then wanted to kill everything in sight. Had to get rid of him in the end.
