  1. so you have a cannister filter as well? in that case i would take all the plants out, and get rid of the ugf. pointless having it in there if you have a cannister running. then it allows you to put some good substrate in there, instead of just gravel. you will find you get better plant growth. bristlenose arent hard to catch after you take everything else out whatever you decide to do, hope it goes well.
  2. sounds good dixon, only thing i would do is leave out the b/n. they are poo machines.
  3. yes this is how i move my tank when i move house, and its bigger than yours. all i do is get a strong wide piece of wood to transport the tank on, a bit longer than the tank, but not too much longer. i then just slide tank wood and all into my van, the wood makes the tank much easier to manage. you must be very careful when shifting a tank like this though, even just with substrate and an inch of water it will be heavy and easy to knock/break.
  4. looking good man, are those cory eggs as well by the kribs?
  5. bah go for the discus mate. the fish all have different personalitys, and you have heaps more options for tankmates. can have a planted tank also. dunno about all discus but mine spend all day fighting and bickering amongst themselves, only stopping to eat.
  6. possibly, i have tried that but they were always fighting. however i have seen a fire eel and tyre track eel in the same tank somewhere else and they were fine.
  7. honestly id just go and buy 1 male and 1 female. be very surprised if they dont pair up.
  8. 9 times out of ten if you put in a male and a female, they will pair up. usually you can sex them at around 2-3 cm easy. they dont take too long to reach maturity, normally the ones in your lfs are old enough or not far from it.
  9. go for it, they will be fine. kribs get a bit protective when breeding, the other fish will soon learn to stay away from their cave.
  10. black ghost knife, hoplo catfish, bristlenose, eels, some larger tetras, apistos, jeez could go on for ages. you have heaps of choices as angels are usually peaceful fish, they may give passers by the odd nip but thats about it. have fun!
  11. nice wish i could get my anubias to grow like that  matt and nemines, do you guys use co2?what about lighting?
  12. very nice matt yea have been meaning to shift that stargrass, it just turned up there a few weeks ago from the opposite corner. show us a pic now zev, u can always give us an updated one when you get a bit of growth. i personally reckon that a tank looks best just after a good clearout, mine had a shopping bag full of dead and overgrown stuff pulled out a couple of days before those pics were taken. keep em coming people!
  13. discus will always be fighting amongst themselves, and there will always one that gets picked on more than the rest. hopefully though the one thats picked on will pluck up a bit of courage and get out there and have a feed, and maybe even fight back once in a while. best just to try and get a bit of food to float past that one for now. sometimes takes up to a few weeks before things settle down after adding new fish. hope they settle down for u soon.
  14. yep it is a balanese crypt. got it a couple of months ago from pupuke. its just staring to take off now, so there should be a few new ones popping up no doubt. will let u know if i find a spare one 8)
  15. hi all, would be great to see everyones planted tanks, I know theres some awesome ones out there! heres mine: not sure exactly what types some of the plants are, but theres various crypts and swords, tiger lotus, anubius, java moss and fern, stargrass, dwarf sag, and a few others that im unsure of the names. fish include discus, various catfish, fire eel, bgk, rams, rummies and guppies. cmon, ive shown you mine, now you show me yours!
  16. i would try 2 or 3 mountain minows, or maybe invest in a heater and then u have heaps more options- neons etc...
  17. no i dont but its on alach st in greerton on the left hand side about halfway down. they have heaps of drums stacked everywhere.
  18. there is a place here in greerton that sells food grade 200l bins which i used for a while. only an hours drive and a good excuse to visit a few fish shops?
  19. if you can pinch a bit of gunked up filter stuff from your existing filter, it should speed it up heaps. not sure about using just the water, may work but never tried it myself. others may know more
  20. nitrates at 30ppm wont kill your fish. in my experience b/n are very resilient once they get to 4cm and over, but until they get to that size they can be quite sensitive to changes. tank looks good too, nice healthy plants, hope things settle down for you.
  21. 200mg per 10 gallons seems like a really high dose? i seem to remember using 100mg per 100l and it wiped it out in a day.
  22. i have used erythromycin a couple of times successfully, without any effect on the filter. kept a close eye on it too as its probably a tad overstocked. didnt notice any spikes at all.
  23. andrea i have a cycled sponge filter you can borrow if you like, should give your cycle a boost. also how much are you feeding? pm me if you want the filter
  24. the kribs will waste any guppies that come too close, once the fry are free swimming you probably will see all the guppies herded into a corner of the tank. kribs are usually excellent parents.
