    BristleNoses

i had a large breeding pair that were about 12ish cm...have read that they can get up to 15cm though.
  2. I bought my via aqua 650 (now CF1000) still runs excellently since i bought it over a year ago. Yes, it does only have two baskets, but i think that's enough, definately enough space for all the media i use. Mine did come with media and im still using it (noodles and coarse sponge). I would recommend this filter to anyone...it's cheap and very, very effective. Also, mine starts by itself too, just takes about 10mins or so to get all the air out of the system. Good luck with your decision.
  3. oh thats awesome freshwest, always nice to find babies, even better when ur not trying . Cant wait to see those pics
  4. Hi Fresh, just curious if you had a recent pic of the tank, just so we can see how it's going? Thanks
  5. thanks Luke and Sharn, my lotus and hairgrass was pearling already today which was nice to see. the other two lotus' have gone in with the rams, along with the left over hairgrass, the crypts have gone into another little tank to grow and the huge sword has gone into the cockatoo tank so i can grow the runners better. Yea, the CO2 is back in (dont think it will do much though, but better than nothing i spose), just until i can afford something better. The whole lot would definately be under 1kg. Normal ceiling can hold the weight just fine. It would be about 15cm away from the water and the lids are not on cos i dont want to risk cracking them, i left them on for the first night just in case the light fell down  . Think that covers it, i'll post pics every week and show growth and so on. Thanks for everyones interest.
  6. I have a pair of these fish, what kind of info are you after? Remember, google is your friend. They are awesome fish hope you enjoy them.
  7. ok, so i got the light all wired up, hung and going....here's just a few pics of the finished product. It's kinda huckery but i dont mind (at least it goes ). By the way, i just re-did the tank so the plants need to grow a bit (thats why it looks so bare) this is mounted into a 12mm piece of plywood, then hung bout 90cm from the roof using chains coming down from a single central hook. so bright! then just what it looks like from my point of view (it puts out more light than my bedroom light) I am now an even happier fish keeper
  8. ok, all the ones that you have two pics of, i would say that they are assorted crypts, the one you think is quite common is hygrophila polysperma, and the one you think is a sword is japanese rush. last one is definately tiger lotus. thanks.
  9. me and a mate went up to the river on the kamais to get 40L of sand....looks awesome in his tank, and goes nicely with the plants too. Your plants will be fine being transferred, although if you have crypts, their leaves will probably die away..but not to worry, they will grow back
  10. ok, update.. I have just got the light today. This is not a proper fish light, and this type is usually used for shop fittings. So, what i have to do is wire it all up, hang it and turn it on . This light came with a 4000k bulb, but i have been told that it will be alright. So, here it is: I'll chuck a few more pics on as i go...just incase somebody out there is interested
  11. this sounds like a cool project, just the other day my friend was telling me i should have pipes going all around my room, joining all the tanks  . I thought i'd just mention, in that link that tsarmina posted, it does say that the guy had no luck with loaches going through....hopefully yours feel differently.
  12. ok here's how i did my one. firstly i started by scratching a little bit out so it made a little hole through the side. Next i used my stepfathers dremell and slowly made the circular shape. finished product: please excuse the algae  .... kribs love this pot though
  13. oh yea, i forgot to mention, Luke, that link is so fantastic thankyou! have learnt loads, and am still learning more.

    Hi, I'm new!

welcome Mel great place this. Not enough room? in a few weeks (possibly even days) of looking over this site you'll be wanting more and more tanks, start making room now and you'll thank yourself later.
  15. MH lights last i think for about 10,000 hours. That is what my boss told me (he has them in his shop, and they are 75W). So, if you have your lights on for about 10hours a day the bulb should last approx 2.8 years. However, do MHs need replacing after a certain period of time like fluoros?
  16. ssshhh, dont tell my parents that! at the mo, i have a double 30W fluoro and a 90cm PL tube. I will just go 150W as the 250W is just costs too much.
  17. wot kind of costs does MH possess, apart from replacing the bulbs of course? I have one of those nutrafin CO2 yeast thingys, but took it out as i was seeing absolutely no results... Shall i chuck it back in just for the sake of it? guess it wouldnt hurt....
  18. Ok, well i think i will go MH (sorry to others), i have seen lukes tank and it looks completely awesome. I know with them i will finally be able to get my ground cover plants going well. Then, if im not totally getting what i want, il reach out for CO2. It's just the ongoing costs of CO2 that is a pain. I am only 16 and making $130 a week, so i dont really want additional costs. Thankyou for everyones comments, they are greatly appreciated
  19. I have been told by a few different people that CO2 is better, and by others that MH lighting is better. So, i would like to judge my decision from the responses i get off this post. I have a 162L fully planted tank running at the moment, however, i want the plants going even better. I only have approx 0.62 WpL at the moment. If i can i would rather go MH because it will be easier. i went to the lfs today and they can do me a second hand 150W for $150, and am getting a price on a 250W as we speak. If i go MH do i need to go 250W or will just 150W do? I think that's all i wanted to say, anyways any and all help will be most appreciated, thankyou.
  20. hello paul, i too am a fellow Taurangonian. Not a bad place for getting hold of fish. Welcome to the forums, you will be happy you joined, trust me.
  21. convicts should be sweet, i have a mate who completely re-did his convict tank. he washed all the gravel, filters and glass so there would have been absolutely no bacteria in there at all. Then he just chucked the convicts back in and they were breeding within days
