  1. I think it looks cool, but I do agree with a tank that deep and this persons obvious DIY know-how they should have made a background for it or built up the back with rocks and stuff, really cool tank though. I wonder where the filtration and stuff is and how he accesses it?
  2. Are you going to fully stock the 700L as soon as it is fixed?

    Who has koi?

Either that or Zayne is a MAF spy
  4. I worked for a year before starting my current job and studying too, gave me a chance to have some fun and just chill out after school and that, but if you were still going to do your last year at school you might as well use your down time studying.
  5. You could probably pick up some extramural papers that would help you out towards the degree/qualification that you wanted to end up having and just chip away at them.
  6. lol there is that, but you do want a "wow" tank if it is on display, there is no reason not to do dems/yellows/shellies and get the best of both worlds.. Hmm thinking about it Nav it would be a good sized tank for a pair of gold heads
  7. If you don't want to run both long term then I would transfer all the media from the old filter into the new one if possible. If you run both together they will take up a share of the bioload each and then when you remove one the remaining one will have to cycle again to take up the extra load. Sometimes it can be no issue but sometimes it can be depends on how your stocking is and tank size and how you hold your tongue etc.
  8. Tons of places that are worth a visit, what sort of fish are you after? The HFF stores would be the first and best option but pupuke/birdbarn and some of the others sometimes have gems or bargains hiding away if you are up for a mission and have transport.
  9. Electric blue rams don't really school.. But a school of schooling fish usually looks good with rams, if you are going to do electric blue rams though don't skimp on the cycling aspect of things they are expensive and quite sensitive to water quality.
  10. This is the best way to quickly cycle a tank, This is very dependant on how big your tank is, how you feed and what fish/filtration you have.
  11. My major problem with a canister filter in this case is if a kid gets at them they are unbelievable destructive I am sure they could pull the pipes off, kink the pipes turn the taps etc, if it is in front of them then they just have to play with it lol
  12. There are probably plenty of people crossing the "spotted bristlenoses" (what people have renamed as rios) with normal bristlenoses anyway to most they are just bristlenoses regardless of if they are spotted, golden or whatever..
  13. I use this theory in my fishroom too and it has worked fine for me, I usually only clean filters when I notice they aren't flowing much and ran 40 tanks in my old fishroom (current one is still getting setup) on this principle for over a year with no issues. What works for me may not work for others, and sometimes what is recommended (based on theory) doesn't actually work in real life. I find things with these "bacteria" very hard to believe and wonder how much scientific backing every theory has.
  14. Your tank looks awesome Jen, the only problem I have with shellies is they aren't that showy, if you have a tank in a public place you want some showy fish in it so everyone looks in there and goes wow that cool. Pretty much noone notices the shellies in my tank inside but everyone notices the tropheus and clown loaches and other bright fish that are in your face.
  15. I would just go with internal ones unless you can easily stash a HOB behind the tank, HOBs are great filters but would be very easy for her to mess around with. I have 2 tanks inside and my kids are pretty good at destroying stuff they are yet to cause any leaks but we do watch it carefully and I can hear the cupboards on my tank opening if they do open them. Why are you cleaning the filter every week? Is it clogged or is it just something you do? I only clean my filters every month - 6 months depending on when they start clogging up.
  16. Yeah I have had issues getting the razor in between the glass it just doesn't go especially with the bracing running along there it is usually too strong, good luck though I meant score into the corners on the bottom of the tank with a glass cutter.
  17. I have some pretty black sand from the wanganui beach in some of my tanks would try some beach sand if you wanted to do it on the cheap.
  18. A tank maker told me score into the corners (corner pieces are the hardest to peel off) and try and crack it into the corners then stick a blanket underneath a blanket on top stick on some glasses and smash it out with a hammer or piece of wood or similar, you want to get the bulk of it out and then gradually bend back the glass and cut the silicone away. It would be fairly easy with a tank as cracked as the one that you have there.
  19. energy online have been good to us and offer a 20% prompt payment which can be close to $100 off in winter..
  20. Any chance anyone can get the red tails/shovelnoses together and try and breed them?

    filters

You really only do water changes to remove the nitrates so providing all the ammonia is getting converted to nitrites and then to nitrates then you wont have to do any more water changes with less filtration. Yes you may want to because with less filtration there may be more crud lying around but it wont be necessary to keep the fish alive. 25 fish in a 60L tank has the potential to overcrowd what fish are you putting in each one?
  22. Yeah I was watching that too.. The safest bet is to smash the existing bottom out and get a new one cut, the price Greg quoted you seems a bit high considering the price he sells 2m long tanks for on trademe, it must be the width or something that makes it cost more? The piece of glass stuck inside would work in the fact that it would hold water but the base of the tank is where most of the stress is and that is why you usually find thicker bottoms than sides so it would quite weak with thin glass as there is no strength left with the 10mm piece broken. Wether or not you take the risk depends on how much of a gamble you want to make and how much you value the fish in it and how much you don't want the floor or area the tank is in wet.
  23. Yeah I got mine off Nav too, I think the colour dropped off alot when I switched them to just spirulina flake now they are on NLS and other pellets the colour seems to be returning.
  24. You have some very nice fish, I am loving the red in your brown hap, mine is not showing that much red anymore I am wondering if I need to raise some of his young to get some redder ones.. Anyone in Auckland have any albino angels?
  25. Yeah drippers work well, the only reason I went the way I went was because I already had the stuff to go that way and it means that I can keep an eye on things when I turn it on. Stella I have one of those timers already Just need to modify it so I can just set it for 15-20mins straight away rather than set it to run at certain time delays ie the smallest time I can do is an hour delay again I want to set it to run so I can do things in the fishroom while my water changes are happening and keep an eye on things in case an overflow blocks or something else goes wrong.
