  1. lol that is what I want! The small one I have is colouring up like that, I am attributing it to the NLS my older one was raised pretty much on spirulina flake when they are carnivores so I think that is why he hasn't developed the best colour. I am going to keep back some babies fed up on NLS and see how they colour up in comparison.
  2. Depends on how lucky you are feeling and what size tank you have, I have 1m and 6f in a 4ft tank that seems to work well the males can be very hard on the girls at times.
  3. I have male brown haps that are almost fully coloured at 2.5-3cm long, egg spots are an indication but females tend to have them too.
  4. It is an interesting one.. I would post it on cichlid forum and see what the members there think, there are so many people on there that see alot more than we see in little old NZ..
  5. Stink looks like a hybrid to me man, you better flick it this way so I can get rid of it for you.... No but seriously it is some sort of jullie Do you have any better pics of it it is hard to id from that pic because it doesn't show the entire fish and it looks like stress coloration (plus I have never seen any of the possibles for it except for regani and I only brought some juvvies today). Just for a guideline we have maleri, trasncriptus, regani, ornatus and dickfieldi in NZ the last 3 of them are harder to come by.
  6. Someone had pairs on trademe for sale? And I think HFF might still have some..
  7. lol I hate to tell you but I told you so with the base I am about to go down the same track with my 5fter.. Glad to hear it is all coming together nicely.
  8. It is a good theory but I have found it doesn't work. I add juvvies of bigger fish in with my other adults and they just grow until they are big enough to take various positions in the tank, my giraffes grew from 2cm to 15cm and took over my 540L mixed african tank. I would say it is a matter of time before they get bigger and aggressive. But there is only one way to find out, how lucky are you feeling?
  9. I got these ones off a guy at a garage sale, brought the lot because they were cheap and thought that fish keepers would want them he had them in the roof of his old shop and when it shut he stripped it out. He said he might have more I am just waiting to hear back from him. I have no link to manufacturers or anything like that I haven't had much luck with the number that are on them, but when opening the ballasts there are phillips components all through it so assume they are something to do with it. There are photos of the number and stuff in that link above you might have more luck finding details. Cooling would depend on how big the tank is and if they are heating the water at all.. Having 3 of them running would be like running a heater in the room so it would heat up quite a bit.
  10. My wife found 3 jobs within 2 weeks of starting to look for one she wasn't going for highly skilled jobs or anything like that though. It was crazy the number of people applying for jobs though she was chosen out of 150 applicants for the job she decided to take. Anyway I do believe that there is something that can be done in your case it is probably just a case of talking to the right person so keep on ringing/visiting..
  11. That does suck They have given you the run around, I would ring and ask to talk to a manager or go into your local branch and (politely) refuse to leave until you have talked to the manager and sorted it out.
  12. I would be looking for something that actually insulates and is water proof. I used carpet/underlay in an old fishroom and although it sucked when it got wet it was nice and warm and free.. lol Rubber flooring works well, you can get pieces that you can stick together from hardware stores, I have heard of people using rubber exercise mats too.
  13. The ones I had are all sold so no point in putting up pics I am trying to get more if I do I will put up some better pics.. Imagine a standard square shaped bracket with some holes in it behind the light, would be very easy to mount it onto whatever you wanted to.
  14. Should ship the same as any other bristlenose I guess.. But I would be wary keeping it with the usual fish that you can keep bristlenoses with, those long fins would be awfully tempting and easy to grab hold of and would also slow it down.
  15. I would be inclined to say that it might be some sort of bacterial mouth rot and it would need to be treated with antibiotics to have any chance of saving the fish..
  16. They would have copies or at least would have in the past, it wouldn't surprise me (having just changed jobs so I know what it is like) that whoever has the office with all that paperwork has cabinets or computer files filled with stuff and probably deleted or threw away the older stuff or just doesn't know it is there.
  17. I have been hunting high and low for people with photos of the early africans that have now died out but either none of the people I have contacted had no pics or aren't interested in replying because they don't care.. Many of them had tang lashers and all number of other things that are now gone..
  18. Most industrial halides are pretty good quality, these ones that I just sold had phillips bits all through the ballasts so they were pretty good. The one you are looking at is around $2-300 maybe more after shipping so you would have to weigh it up how much it was worth to you, also you have no idea what quality that one is, being "cheap" it might not be very reliable anyway. It doesn't show it very well in the pics but there is a mounting bracket behind the light, you would just adapt this onto whatever you wanted to mount it on, you could probably find an old desk lamp with adjustable bits and adapt it onto that, just just hang it from your ceiling. Obviously you would mount the ballast elsewhere and just suspend the light fitting and bulb which doesn't weigh much.
  19. I sold off a few 150W halides for $40ea recently, sure they don't have a fancy mount but basically the same thing as that, you can just buy whatever bulb you want for them and you are away. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=49351
  20. Did your teacher tell you why you failed? It is all very simple maths but if he wants to get complicated then (as Smidey has suggested) you can add glass thickness into volume, bracing in weight and even how full the tank is, in a practical sense if you have gravel/rocks in the tank it can change things even more. But IMO if the teacher wants that then he has to give all the details in the question.
  21. Awesome thanks suphew that clears it up
