  1. I am not sure if furan works the usual recommended one is Erythromycin.. The algae doesn't seem to bother fish fish just looks ugly especially on white sand.
  2. Damn thats alot of money, just get a normal tank Joe how many amazing tanks on here have you seen that have just standard old glass and they look awesome.. You could find girls or go off to uni soon and the tank will end up sitting on your lawn or getting sold for a fraction of that price. I would just buy a cheap one and put the rest of the money into other gear or fish for it, you will enjoy it just as much and then later on get a big massive clear one..
  3. You could remove the fish and treat the tank with copper or something to kill the snails clean it all out and then start again? Ideally you would need to find some established filter media to restart your filter though.
  4. Forgot to mention that you can get coral sand or coral pieces/rock cheap sometimes just trawl trademe and keeping looking around..

    Coral

Fair enough if its what you want then buy it I hope it is good when it shows up!

    Coral

I have never used that coral in tanks but I have seen it in plenty of peoples tanks with no issues, as Phoenix has said there maybe sharp edges so run a finger around and have a look first. On another note did you find a tank that suited locally?
  7. lol that seller is known for not knowing what he is doing don't worry about that A google search doesn't take long to see that an angels natural temp is around 26C in the breeding season so it is fine.. I remember quite a few years ago when I first started out when we kept most our tanks at 24 now it is at 26, either way a few C isn't going to make a difference.

    Coral

You could round it off it is not something I have ever considered but it could be an issue so better to be safe than sorry.

    Coral

Chuck it in Just make sure it hasn't been around anything harmful - fly spray ant killer or anything like that if you were really hard out you could boil it.
  10. Its interesting you have had issues with that Ira I have heard of it happening but thought it was another of those "myths", I have regularly had filters disconnected for 10-12 hours and just hooked them up and away they went with heavy stocking etc with no issues.. I even unplugged my FX5 on my african tank and forgot about it for 3 days just did a 50% water change and turned it back on and had no issues.
  11. You will be fine with a 6 hour power cut your only worry will be aeration/water disturbance in heavily stocked tanks..
  12. The tank is a little small really.. You could maybe do a pair of gold shellies or a pair of jullies but they would have to be really compatible pairs as there is little room for error. I would suggest he wait until he can get a bigger tank before he tries Africans.
  13. I usually chuck a strop over the top but only do it up firm and use poly to spread the weight of the tank, that coupled with having it packed out really well with poly usually makes sure they dont move at all, but have also stuck poly under and in front and used a strop to pull tanks forward into the front of the trailer.. We are only talking about 2-3ft tanks here so should be very easy to move/transport, I would question the cost benefits of hiring a moving company compared to the replacement cost of second hand tanks of this size.
  14. You can use any substrate but just make sure you use coral rock or limestone or shells to get the PH up, 8.2 is probably recommended but it doesn't need to be that high, I have seen them happy and breeding in a PH of 6 but I always add coral rock (coral sand) or limestone to all my tanks and keep the PH above 7.5.
  15. I would check the water parameters first, but you may have introduced something nasty with the new fish..
  16. Yeah and even if you stick something under the tank, don't think that sticking a bucket of gravel inside it will stop it from bouncing around it just stops the bottom from moving but the rest of the tank still moves and the bottom gets smashed up.. lol
  17. That's not dedication, I got up at 5am caught and bagged 30 tanks of fish (with tons of help from a few good friends) then drove to Auckland with a trailer filled with tanks, got there at 8pm started settling fish into tanks (again thanks to some more good friends at this end). Then around midnight got to bed up at 6 to go out south and load up some more tanks to take back down to Bulls for another friend and drove back! That was a big weekend.. Taupo and back in 1 day it definitely doable.
  18. Cool fish I am glad to hear they are around I have only seen them once in the flesh and they are tiny but cool little guys. I am sure you could feed them on newly hatched brineshrimp, micros/grindals etc, ones on pellets would be even better!
  19. All the glassiers I have met have said you don't need any special tools to do thicker glass if anything just an older one so it isn't as sharp, I know when Barrie cut 10mm for me he made it look easy, far easier than I can cut 3mm anyway lol But I guess you get good at it when you do it all day If I want it done right then I go and ask for help..
  20. When I drove up with a trailer load I just used poly and packed it inbetween all the tanks on the trailer I packed it so hard that none of the tanks could move, poly all up the front edge and a tarp over the front to stop wind getting into tanks or stones getting flicked up and smashing them and a strop over the top
  21. Yep happened to all the blues and golds that I had as well I tried all sorts nothing worked to save it..
  22. Adtape is the liquid prazi, you can also get droncit (not drontal) tablets which you can dissolve and crush up they are 50mg of pure prazi per tablet.
  23. Yep a big internal bead doesn't really achieve much in terms of strength, in actual fact silicone is a sealant not a glue, cleaning is a biggie otherwise it all just peels off and doesn't stick.
  24. I agree it is always best to buy groups and let them sort themselves out to get breeders but with harem spawning apistos that aren't really strict "pair forming" you are more likely to get away with just a male/female than with the pair forming fish. It does appear the jury is still out on if these guys are better in harems or pairs according to the sites I have read on google. They are supposed to be quite hard to sex always best to do your research before going in, there was one in HFF that could have been a girl but looked too colourful to me, maybe worth a punt if I was feeling luckier. They are a good size though and there were some very nice males coloured up in there. Either way they are very nice fish it would be nice to see someone get some males/females of these together and get them breeding so they don't die out like all the other times we have had them and other apistos in the country.
  25. Lol good point Caryl posting on my phone so reaaly hard to read the entire message and type correctly on this touch screen, it is hard not to revert to text abbreviations for everything..
