  1. thanks! have gotten some Oto's which are going well for starters.
  2. Righto have a slight algae problem that I was wanting to fix by adding in something to handle it, now I don't have a tank anywhere near as big for a Pleco, however since I have Siamese Fighting fish thought about Siamese algae eaters?? has anyone used these fish before with other semi agressive fish? I'm looking to keep them with several other female fighters and possibly a school of dwarf chain loaches. I was also looking at oto catfish too as they are a numbers fish too. thanks Steve
  3. I added dwarf chain loaches to my tank, and not only are they a great addition to the tank (looking zebra like) and have bottom dweller shoalling behaviours but if you don't over feed your fish they rip through snails like a drunk eating a curry. You usually see the damage they have caused when you do a water change / gravel clean and you see all the empty snail shells in the bucket. (They suck the snail out of their shells you see) remember to always do research on fish before adding new ones to your tank, but dwarf chain loaches are relatively cheap, nice peaceful non aggressive fish, like certain gravels (softer finer for their whiskers), are small so good for smaller tanks, BUT are a schooling fish and need to be in numbers 3 - 5+ minimum. Now I have gotten rid of the snail problem, I now have an algae problem!! time for a Siamese Algae eater me thinks.
  4. Well after googling the possible diagnosis, the symptoms do match that and pics for columnaris, also explains the accelerated growth/kill rate and how white spot cure really did nothing for the fish. Symptoms: •White spots on mouth, edges of scales, and fins •Cottony growth that eats away at the mouth •Fins disintegrate beginning at the edges •'Saddleback' lesion near the dorsal fin •Fungus often invades the affected skin •Rapid gilling in cases where gills are infected So in NZ what would be the best buy for treating this? since it took me ages to get the females to begin with, and so I don't have the same outcome with any of my community tank dwellers.
  5. cheers sounds like a good plan with the salt!! as for diagnosis, well this has baffled me as it looked like white spot to start with, then a cotton like texture emerged and this closed one gill, then covered eyes, then formed around mouth giving them white lips. On a side angel you could see furry bits from the infection site. (sort of like lichen on trees). Don't have any pics I'm affraid as all fish are dead and gone. thanks
  6. Hi everyone, after losing all 5 of my female fighters due to contamination from pet store fish I am wondering 1) what would be the best way to disinfect the qarantine tank they were in? 2) after trying the white spot cure from pet store this had no effect in my mind and simply made it worse as the cotton like white stuff spread rapidly from fins to gills to eyes over night on day one, and all were dead in the morning &c:ry is there a better faster treatment for this available? 3) after checking online there seems to be some treatments like jungle fungus eliminator and Bettazing has anyone tried these? or is it even available in NZ? since my pet store seems to have nothing but white spot cure and ironically fish in tanks with whitespot. thanks
  7. I am of both types I believe. I have guppies and platys that I haven't named. (go figure lol) but have named Demon - Red Siamese Fighter Rayo Azul (Spanish for Blue Lightning) - Blue Siamese Fighter Angel - Grey with white fin tip female fighter Badger - Silver with green fins female fighter Hannya (Japanese mask for jealous female demon) - Grey and Red Siamese female fighter Sakura (Cherry Blossom) - Whitish Red/pink Siamese female fighter Wednesday - Darkish Grey Siamese female fighter Katana - Dwarf Chain Loach Tanto - Dwarf Chain loach
  8. Thanks will give it a go.
  9. Thanks everyone 1. will check into the smaller loach to see if its compatible (wouldn't want to get a smaller clown loach as don't really have a bigger tank for him once it starts growing) 2. I only have x1 Male fighter in the tank, along with x2 guppies, x1 platys. otherwise a complete change will be in order.
  10. ok, it seems my Betta tank has been overrun with the lil blighters, and while they are 50/50 good and bad for the tank with eating all the algae they are getting to be an eyesore. I have tried the following techniques and haven't much success, anyone have any good remedies for this? 1. Simply squashing them on the side whenever I see one. Outcome: Too many to squash :an!gry 2. Lettuce at the bottom overnight. Outcome: some were removed not many, they seem to like algae more than lettuce  3. Considered a Clown loach, however they are too big for my tank and could possibly harm my fighter So without using chemicals as I believe this to harm other stuff in the tanks, is there any other option available? Or is it a complete water change and gravel hot water bath in order? Thanks Steve
  11. Thanks! yes good to be here. I am contemplating the drip system as I have space and like the plumbing aspects too. I only have x2 male fighters at the moment but what I am finding difficult is tracking down females in my town? Anyone know of anyone with females for sale in the hutt valley, Wellington Area? PM me cheers Steve
  12. Wow thanks for the break down on breeding tips n tricks. Am really into these fish aye and looking to set up a breeding fish room where I am. I have been looking at the 'Betta Barracks' idea but after searching around I found a how to vid on making a Betta Drip System. Has anyone tried this concept? which really looks like hydroponics for fish lol.
