  1. Chances are wetpets will throw tonic/melafix/furan2 or something like that at you which probably won't do anything, even with pics and tons of experience diagnosing these things is next to impossible..
  2. The dwarf neon gouramis are prone to dropsy there are many theories why but who really knows..
  3. Pretty sure you cannot legally breed and sell them either without some fancy expensive permit..
  4. I will approve all the member requests later, have managed to see the requests but can't seem to approve them on my phone.. Will have to look into the page types and stuff because the page is very hard to find and if it isn't being seen by people then it isn't really promoting anything.
  5. I think you need to give us more details than that.. What size is your tank? What fish are in it? What filtration are you running? What would cause you to think that things might not be working ok?
  6. How often you clean the filter depends on what media you run in it.. If you stick really fine filter wool in it or polishing pads then you will need to clean it more often because it clogs up faster, I clean my FX5 every 6months or so could probably go upto a year even more as it still has good flow, that is with the standard filter pads around the outside of the trays and noodles etc in the middle. The trade off for the longer maintenance period is it doesn't get 100% of the really fine crud out of the water but still keeps it clean enough for me.
  7. Yep I can help, but saw this fish listed on trademe with a leaky filter so can only assume it is too late
  8. I have used snail rid at the recommended dosage on a tank filled with fish in an attempt to treat a disease..
  9. Used to have these they were awesome, but lost them all Glad to hear they are still around though..
  10. I would try and source healthy and good quality fish, and a good selection.. It would be a very hard market to get into though not much demand for tropical fish and your tank of exotics probably wouldn't generate many sales when 99% of sales that go through shops would be the common varieties..
  11. I am pretty sure if you give the shop the time/date they can look through the computer and print a new receipt and it should have shown up on your card as well so you should be fine.
  12. Have to agree with Alan here, doesn't look good.. Unsure on treatment but here is some light reading that discusses a few.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/columnaris_disease.php
  13. Fish 2 and 3 could be socolofi (or socolofi crosses that have thrown back - very hard to know without knowing who bred them etc) and the first one looks like a hybrid call it a blue zebra or whatever you will, it is not an ice blue. I should add these fish are likely to get bigger and very aggressive because they are zebras (especially the hybrid male).
  14. You need to identify the unknown fish in your tank first.. But I wouldn't recommend getting any more unless you were going to start again with 2-3cm youngsters which would take time to outgrow the tank.
  15. Yeah the food is probably too hard/big and they will eat it after it has soften up a bit and broken down..
  16. Ok well your tank is too small really for one eye biter (they easily get to 15-20cm long) and the majority of african cichlids.. I would probably only try for 1 pair of lump heads in there once they pair off they can get quite agro, and probably only electric yellows. Depending on what your other fish are you may need to move them on before they outgrow the tank as well.. It might be working now but as fish grow and mature that is when things go wrong and there not many mbuna that can be done in a tank as small as yours, dems/yellows and some peacocks might go alright for a while but most will outgrow the tank in a year or 2.
  17. Sometimes new fin grows back slightly white before it colours up, is the whiteness going back into the fin or growing?
  18. For your mix you really need to go for something like NLS which is suitable for vegos and predators you have a big mix there, you can also use some vege based foods to mix it up a bit. I have used all sorts of foods in moderation with no issues in all my tanks but the tropheus ones, but I do know a good breeder who feeds all his fish (even tropheus) on a high quality standard flake with no issues.
  19. Good idea on the pot scrubbers, I had heaps of issues with media stuck in the impeller and they aren't cheap to replace if you wear it out. But yeah have heard the same can't really go wrong with cheap and heaps of surface area. The thing to remember with bio media is that bacteria will only build up proportionatly to how much bio load (ammonia) is produced in the tank. I would be confident in saying that you have already provided more than enough surface area for as much load as you could produce in your tank with your existing filter, so any extra is just a bonus. Carbon is not needed it doesn't really do much (some even go as far to say it can cause harm by stripping too many minerals from the water) just use it if you are trying to remove something like meds etc.
  20. Just buy some biomedia off trademe, some ceramic noodles will work well. You can also goto a garden centre and buy some pumice chips the right size (you will have to grade them for FX5 because otherwise it passes through the holes in the trays and ends up in the impeller as I found) but it is cheap and works well. Some will say you need to buy the eheim (ceramic gold) ones that cost a small fortune because they have the surface area of an inner city block per kg or something crazy like that. But I am yet to see anyone tell you how much surface area you need for a given stocking or tank volume and I would suspect even if you filled 2 FX5s with filter wool you would have plenty of surface area for bacteria and would be fine. Several options for where to stick your filter inlets/outs, you could stick both inlets and both outlets at the same place this would create massive flow in the same direction. You could stick both inlets in the middle and outlets at each side, I don't think there is any real wrong way of doing it apart from sticking an outlet by an inlet (sucking in clean water not waste). So just do what works with your tank and move the outlet jets until all the poop is getting picked up. 2 FX5s on a 700L tank would be awesome!
  21. lol been up since 6 Check on here sometimes at work... Make sure you post back and let everyone know what you choose. Also you haven't really talked about what african cichlids you keep? Diet can be different for different types, some are vegos some are predators..
  22. The price does double with shipping.. But if you get a few people together the shipping price decreases, select some and continue to check out and then change the number ordered to get the prices etc. I tried the cichlidgold and it was ok, my fish didn't really seem to like it and I think it was floating. I am also very wary of trying new foods because I don't want to bloat my fish, the Hikari is good food haven't used it with africans so not sure how it would work out for them but does have a good rep. I would just buy a few different things and feed in moderation, you have seen how many tanks I have and despite the cost I end up going back to NLS. Another option would be this one http://www.trademe.co.nz/Pets-animals/Fish/Fish-food/auction-376171385.htm which is a good food.
  23. Just goop over it, it will be fine
  24. Hi Alex, How big is your tank? Remember that if you are stocking for breeding then you don't want to stick an assortment in there that is how you end up breeding hybrids.. Generally if you are trying to breed you want to do it in a species tank or mix the species that are less likely to cross (or produce obvious hybrid babies which can be culled or given away). Also if you plan on getting more eye biters you need to end up with 1m and 3f++ the males are super aggressive and if you end up with a pair chances are your female will get killed.. As for juvvie fish I breed a few and live out west, usually sell things for $6ea depending on species around 2-3cm long let me know if you would like to come out and have a look. Put up some pics of your randoms and we will see what they look like. Stone and water world is probably the place for your rocks as well. Good luck and get in touch if you want to have a look.
  25. Awesome pics Nice fish too!
