  1. We haven't seen any of them in our journeys its not to say they're not out there, there are a few fish that are in nz that are similair colours that ive seen around though..
  2. I got microworms if you want some... Dunno where you are in relation to me though..
  3. You could try red zebras if you've already got alot of blue in your tank females are orange and males are closest to pink..
  4. Get a stand from bunnings warehouse they're $70 and each shelf can hold 350kgs.. And I think there are a few people making cheap tanks on trademe atm.
  5. I got mine big but yes you can sex them best bet is to look here http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... php?id=760 scroll through the pics the second one shows a young male and female... It is probably not a good idea to keep more than one male in a 55gal though they are pretty nasty to each other and your supposed to have a few females too cuz the males are nasty to them as well..
  6. Maybe baby platties or bristlenoses? Can you post some pics?
  7. Yeah africans are great As Frenchy has said its a good idea to go with different colours/shapes, basically just have a look around probably through this http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/a ... allery.php see what you like and probably post in cichlids with what you like and see if anyone has any or has seen any because some of them are hard to find.. When you've decided what you like and if they're avaliable then people can probably advise you how many of each to put in or if they're suitable for the size tank you have..
  8. If you dont really care about breeding you could do an all male tank? Is your tank a small 4ft or a large 3ft?
  9. Your tank is a little small really for too many africans according to the experts have a look around here for some idea http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/q ... e_list.php There are also pretty much pictures and profiles on most african species on there. Electric yellows are malawi's and you can get a few fish to go with them.. If you want to go african or you can stick some larger cichlids/schooling fish in with them.. atm we have: 12 electric yellows 5 red zebras (2 holding) 1 blue zebra 3 ice blue zebras (1 holding) 2 red sholdered peacocks 2 big hybrids 2 red kadango's 2 brown haps 2 OB zebras and I think thats about it they're only in a 160 litre shallow 4ft waiting for me to get the 540litre 5ft up and running... All the fish we have are pretty commonly avaliable at most LFS's.
  10. Man thats a big disaster! Im glad its pretty much too cold for cichlids to live over here it would be a disaster to see them cruising around and eating trout etc..
  11. Could stick in some johanni for the same reason.. blue males yellow/gold females..

    new tank

Looks awesome good skills.. Good idea on the sump too its a right pain to get into a stand to clean out the sump!
  13. I had heard that the napier aquarium had to pipe all their waste water out to sea and do all sorts of other things like keep the tank and water completly seperate to be able to get a permit to keep them... Think maf were worried about them breeding and getting out lol
  14. Caper says "Wouldn't that be too stressful for the fish?" Of course it would be but probably not as much stress as the fish it killed or is bullying would be under... I had a similair thing a few years ago with a 3 spot blue gourami and I just got rid of them altogether.
  15. Just found this randomly it has some pretty expensive arow's on it... Link removed as it is beyond screen width Mod Bill.

    Vent photos

We recently vent sexed a "female" brown hap from a LFS and these guys are very similair to your flame backs her vents look like shes a female but she acts and has coloured up quite alot.. Maybe the vents dont work out so well on Haps?
  17. Yeah I got an orange flash cockatoo..
  18. Id hate to think whats involved! Probably a bloody huge tank to breed them in.. and even bigger one to raise them in... Its probably not hard in theory but logistically.. Maybe google it and see what comes up!
  19. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f183/ ... C00638.jpg 2 females.. one top right corner one bottom right corner http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f183/ ... hsmall.jpg male (centre of pic) Pics too wide Please resize before posting. Bill. Mod.
  20. lol all good im sure if you go away as planned we will hopefully have babies when you get back with lots of money to setup a huge tank
  21. Cant really see much from those pics aye.. Check cichlid forum http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/c ... .php?cat=2 or maybe a few of the zebras in here if you think they are zebras.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/c ... .php?cat=2
  22. I guess it depends on how big your tank is.. How young your lamps are and how big (and what type) your malawis are.. Alot of people stick brichardi and other tangs in with their malawis and always see it in shops so I dont see why you wouldn't be able to do it..
  23. Got some nice blue ices from jansens silverdale today Hopefully 1 male and 2 females ill post some pics sometime.. They still had a few left if anyones keen..
