  1. I have no problems at all with the yellows I have 4 big males in the same tank they have no damage at all on them theres at least 3 bigger females as well and about 12 younger ones that are unsexable (from 4 different sources), the tanks 5ft 540 litres and has a heap of other fish in it too, the general consensus ive seen on cichlid-forum is not to bother with the ratios for yellows its not as critical as with the other africans. Im going to seperate the best male and 3 females into their own 2 1/2 ft tank when I strip the tank to get all the other fish im selling out tomorrow.. They dont seem to be getting enough food to fatten up in the community tank its a bit of a feeding frenzy at dinner time.. Heres a photo of 3 of our biggest males scrapping the smaller one was trying to join in as well nothing ever comes of it though.. Oh and good luck with the auction Steve

  3. Mighty big for a guppie, I think you can get some danio's that get pretty big not too sure about what ones.. And most rainbows get to about 10cm and you can get reds yellows etc..
  4. Always remember that a LFS's job (reputable or not) is to sell fish the amount of bad advice (IMO) they hand out is amazing.. Maybe you could consult the advice of many of the people who breed discus (and have a genuine love of the fish) on here and who can offer you some unbiased advice. Good luck we would love to have discus some day but the africans have taken over all our tanks..

    sealing MDF

You can get a 2 pot sealer for it from most hardware stores I didn't end up using it in the end im just being careful...
  6. Yeah Eheims are a pain in the bum like that... I find if you dont roll it in place it doesn't try to roll off, I know it sounds kinda weird, also when your trying to get the top on/off try leaving the outlet tap open and it reduces the vacumn inside the filter allowing it to come off easily and back on again..
  7. Ive never had a fluval before so dont know exactly but I can pretty much guarantee there should be no gap with the seals in and the unit closed? Are you sure you have installed the seals correctly?
  8. Oh yeah I remember now that should be ok I guess.. I haven't ever kept these guys as adults so I guess it would be a thing to give a go and see if it works out... Im not a fan of a species only tank especially with africans as more fish spread the aggression... Maybe stick some electric yellows in as well but your tank is still a little on the small side..
  9. If 6 would live in there without killing each other.. You can give them a go I presume its about a 3ft tank?
  10. Already got 6 Dan and thats the plan But may be a long time coming they have small broods and we want to get a colony of more than 6 first..
  11. 2"? They whould be breedable at that size.. Damn ours were only 2cm from HFF mt roskill... Yeah we got 6 they're cool looking fish alright will look good with all the yellow we have in our tank.
  12. Different strokes for different folks I guess Im sure Doug will try both and do whats easiest for him...
  13. Try this post http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/ps-dem ... 14576.html was only a week or so ago, we got 6 and they're in with babies in the rearing tank no problems so far but they are only small, someone (frenchy I think) mentioned in that other post about someone who kept them in a 2ft tank?? They do only stay small so maybe with a good filter like 10 of them and some target fish (maybe rainbows barbs or something like that they will be ok in your tank.. I dont think they're sexable at the size we got them at how big were the ones you saw and at what jansens?
  14. Yeah sucking on the hose is easy and painless And once you have it started all you have to do is close the taps clean all your media empty it etc, when you want it to go again chuck the outlet hose in a bucket (below the inlet in the tank of course) open the tanks and it syphons again..
  15. I stick the intake pipe into the water and suck on the outlet pipe until a syphon is established stick the outlet into a bucket until the pipes and unit are full and then it should go.
  16. lol looks like we've got a bit of a vote going on here... Come on everyone else give us your calculations, is the tank empty at the moment? lol maybe you can bucket water in just to be sure?
  17. you can just find the total length front to back.. are you sure its 14.5" using your first measurements (triangle with sides of 4.5" and 6" remaining side is 7.5) I calculate front to back as 17.5"
  18. Yeah check the edit i fixed it up  got my inches and cm mucked up..
  19. Oh yeah I think I know what you mean.. Just thought a hexagon had to have 6 sides... If its what I think your talking about it which i drew a quick pic of its volume would be: Just break it up into rectangles and triangles to get the area of the bottom and times it by the height.. If it looks like what I think I get 120.26 litres without taking any out for gravel etc and not taking into the fact you dont fill it right up.. does it look like this? (sorry crap paint pic)
  20. So is it a beveled edge tank (sometimes called bay window tanks) with just the front 2 edges cut off?
  21. lol continuing on the completly unrelated thread I use dechorinator in my 540 litre african tank in the lounge and do 50% water changes weekly its a pain in the butt to cart 200+ odd litres of water through the house up onto a chair to fill the tank up again.. I have seen these http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 837390.htm and heard about them before but always thought they chlorine would be a problem? Any opinions?
  22. Be careful posting things like that.. Your PM inbox can only hold a limited amount of messages......
