Sorry about that I didn't expect all of them to work... :
-
ok that didn't work ill try again.. Male or Female or
-
Mine layed about 3 hours ago so hopefully ill have some babies I am removing the parents tomorrow and im hatching the eggs without them as they alwasy eat them all on day 3. How small are you rams maybe they are not yet mature and may devope some more? I may be interested in purchasing another female to breed with the line that ive got here down the track so maybe if you haven't found a male by then we can do a deal.. Pics of my pair are as follows (hopefully) female male

As previously mentioned your Gouramies will be fine as for cichlids you could try: -Angels -dwarf cichlids (kribs/rams/cockatoo's or similair apisto I had a pair of rams and cockatoo's breeding in my small community until I recently got them a breeding tank each and they didn't hurt anything) -keyholes -firemouth (may get too big and eat a few smaller fish but I did successfully keep a breeding pair of them in a community similair to the one you have and if you get a nice male they are impressive but they dig up plants) I have also heard of people keeping electric yellows in a community tank and I used to keep a brichardi in a community tank as well but I dont think they are recommended. The main thing to look for in a cichlid is something not too nasty, something that wont get big enough to eat anything else and get one or 2 of the same sex so they dont pair off (unless its a dwarf and you'll probably get away with a few pairs in a tank your size) and take over your tank..
-
I cant say that ive ever had that happen before mind you I haven't had too many tanks with dividers in them.. Did you breed your apisto's or buy them?
-
provided you got the room and the goldfish aren't big enough to fit any of them in their mouths..
-
It shouldn't be too hard to find a 12V power supply that will power it.. I know you can jimmy computer power supplies to drive car amps inside so it shouldn't be too hard to do your lighting or look around for a 12Vdc plug into the wall adapter for like a cordless drill or something like that

I know you can get snail rid etc.. Im surprised your male cocaktoo doesn't eat them I think mine does as all the snails that were in the tank have disappeared.. I think you can get snail rid but im unsure how effective it is as ive never used it.. Short of that you could put a loach in there they are pretty good at getting rid of snails.. Good luck with the cocaktoo's im about to do a water change on mine and remove the divider soon so hopefully I have more luck so far ive only raised 1 baby it was soo much easier with my other pair years ago.
-
Id just chuck them back in today it stresses them but they will get stressed if you move them after they've settled anyway.. Im still having trouble with mine as well.. Had another lot fungus and a lot when the female laid before I removed the divider so the eggs didn't get fertilised..
-
Ive got a few bits you can have if you want I got them when I was in the naki last time as the Auckland beaches are pretty bare..
-
Hey they aren't my cup of tea but if people are looking for some of them I saw 3 albino females are hollywood in Albany yesterday and they appeared healthy etc...
-
Whats the recipe for making the food (ie what other stuff do you add and blend up) or do you just feed the ox heart by itself?
-
I have bred these successfully a number of times years ago and recently I have been having a similair problem they have laid 3 times now and the eggs keep disappearing.. I have been watching them to see whats going on and so far they appear to be fertile etc and alot hatch but the female doesn't remove fungused eggs (I dont know why she doesn't) and it spreads and kills all the eggs/wrigglers in the end im left with a heap of white eggs with fungus all around them and eventually the female gives up and eats them all. I ended up with about 5-10% wrigglers after 4 days last batch (4 babies) which I removed but they didn't do so well.. The next batch I have I am going to add some meth blue to hopefully help the female with the fungus and remove the male from the tank, I think I will also add a night light so that she can look after the eggs fulltime and hopefully reduce the fungus again. If that doesn't work I will remove the eggs to a bowl with meth blue and an air stone and give it a go artificially (but ive looked around and it seems people have limited success with apisto's this way and the babies also seem to grow slower).. I would remove your bristlenose and position all your tunnels etc so that you can see in them and shine a torch in there to see whats going on you may be having fungus problems as well.. Keep posting and let everyone know what you do and how you get on and ill do the same.. Good luck

Yeah thats what I thought it seems like person has some super barbs or doesn't know anything about fish... I was tempted to ask him if we were thinking of the same golden barbs..
-
LOL Yeah I figured as much just thought it was pretty odd behaviour I had heard that silver sharks were hard to breed I thought it was something to do with the size of the adult fish and tanks etc..
-
Im just wondering if anyone has bred these or know anything about breeding these as I just witnessed some very odd behaviour from my 2 in my community tank.. The bigger one was chasing the smaller one around in circles (similair to egg scatterers breeding). Does anyone know how to sex them or anything? It was just bizare how they were behaving and they are perfectly normal now..
-
I found this on trademe while I was hunting for bargains, it sounds very odd to me thinking of golden barbs killing another fish or protecting eggs.. http://www.trademe.co.nz/STRUCTURE/AUCT ... tten=true&

If you google them you should find alot of information, I have read somewhere about apisto's just to give them a crack in whatever water you do have and see what happens, as alan has already mentioned the general opinion I have found is that PH etc isn't too important for making them spawn but for fry survival and some say that in certain water conditions you will get a varied proportion of sexes of fish.. Good luck with them and make sure you post again letting everyone know what you did and how your getting along.. lol and if are successfuly how do you think the fish would travel

Yeah stockings or filter wool was about the best I could come up with as well.. Its a fluval 3+ so can be turned down a bit but that doesn't do much, fully grown cockatoo's aren't the strongest swimmers so it would have the babies im sure... Anyway thanks and merry xmas to you too!
-
Does anyone have any inovative solutions on how I can leave my internal filter in the tank with fry and not have them sucked up or killed? Its in my bedroom and I hate the sound of bubbles and cant sleep so dont want to use a sponge filter..
-
Thank you 2 very much for you help you seem to both have input on most of the posts on here and im sure im not the only one that appreciates your experience and input. I wish the outcome was more positive for this fish but it looks like its not the case and I think the damage was done before I got her.. Looks like im on the look out for another female cockatoo.. Anyway thanks again for your help the fish is in quarantine but she doesn't look too good and I think I will just do was suggested and put her out of her misery..
-
Cheers alan I was pretty sure she was a gonner, I haven't seen any come back when the scales start sticking out.. Is there anything I can do to make sure the other occupants dont all die as well? Is dropsy anything to do with poor water conditions etc or is there anything I can stick in the tank to kill it before it affects anything else? Or should I just keep up with the water changes and good housekeeping and hope that everyone else is happy and healthy enough to keep it at bay.. I was foolish to bring her home without quarantine and hopefully I dont learn my lesson by loosing the rest of the tank.. lol in the mean time ill have to hunt around for another double/tripple red female as she was going to be used to breed with my orange flashes to see what she produced..

Hi everyone I just came back from going away for the night and noticed one of my female dwarf cockatoo's is looking a bit worse for wear.. I haven't had her all that long and shes never looked 100% but has always eaten etc.. Anyway shes always been really fat and been breathing heavily ever since ive had her (ive only had her 3 weeks) but now shes off her food looks alot fatter and it looks like she cant swim very well her tail seems to float her up if you can understand what im saying.. her scales are also sticking out when viewed from above. From what I can tell shes probably going to die, does anyone have any suggestions for what I could do to possible cure her, or more importantly anything I can do to prevent anything else in the tank getting what shes got. At the moment everyone else is looking fine but I dont want to loose anything else. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks
-
lol yeah until the convicts your trying to feed to the other fish survive and take over that tank too....
-
How are your fish simfish? I think mine have just laid so hopefully there might be some babies.. Im toying with the idea of removing mum and pot and putting them in a floating fish bowl with a foam filter because ive got a big power filter in the tank to clean up all the other fishes mess and I think it would suck all the babies up...
