  1. Cichlids aye who would keep them This happens from time to time with them, hope she will recover fine, as for reintroducing them wait until she is recovered and intoduce the male into the females tank so he's coming into her space and she's settled before him. Heaps of hiding places and im sure they will be fine.
  2. I think he meant 8mm Im glad you got them breeding the ones you got off me showed no signs at all.. But I think I might have had 5 of the same sex, I might have to get some more back off you at some stage, did you ever manage to find any of the orange/red ones?
  3. As long as the heater is isolated from the supply (ie unplugged) then the water will be safe to unplug and wont have changed at all, its quite scary when they go, ive had one go and the before but I think I had cracked it by accident and water got in causing it to explode..
  4. lol I thought you had been bitten by the african bug! Why would you put oscars in those tanks! If anyones after some I know of a breeding pair of oscars for sale too..
  5. Id have to agree with oscarboy (might be a first lol) alot of fishy friends partners have got into fish and even bred a few, but when they have their first disaster and loose them all they got out of it.. Hopefully its not the case with you guys, it would be better for the bank balance if she wasn't into fish though!
  6. If the ph's are the same just catch them and chuck them over, if you have to aclimitize I just use a bucket fill it maybe a fifth of the way up with the fishes original water and then gradually syphon the new tanks water into the bucket..
  7. I only pay 5c a bag for standard large bags or 10cea for the huge aqua one bags so they're not dare go talk to Ben he'll sort it out..
  8. Turn it on and see what temperature the water stabalizes at if its too high turn the heater down if its too low turn it up..
  9. Media in any filter should be able to be replaced by filter wood and noodles or other bio media that fits and doesn't clog any moving parts.
  10. You dont have to have any number of times per hour ive done it with much less had my 540L african tank fully stocked with a 404 (1300LPH empty) for ages and it went fine, just as long as you keep up with maintenance etc you'll be fine with any filter I doubt sponge filters used in breeding tanks flow that much water.

    Import list.

I have often wondered how easy it would be it is good to know There are plenty of fish that would have no chance of surviving here that id love but we cant get..
  12. I have ob zebras and used to breed them by the 100, I have only just got hold of some offspring that I bred to grow on and breed from again, their father was similair to the pic you have posted, that fish would be under blue lighting I would say.. Heres a pic of my original male

    My New Fish

Glad to hear you've got a cool fish Fighters aren't that hard to breed either, just hard to house all the babies! Its probably a good thing you didn't get another gold ram female when 2 of them pair off the 3rd wheel will get beaten up they're a pair forming fish not a harem fish.. Looking forward to the photo's

  15. I have 6-7 young ones that will be for sale soon J malieri if your interested.
  16. Yeah you might get away with it I wouldn't do more than one pair of jullies and maybe 1m 3-4f yellow's watch them for size and aggression they may need to be moved on or upgraded in due time.

    Import list.

Id say contact maf, but I would imagine its a very hard long and expensive process. As far as im aware maf did a big thing a while ago when they asked people to submit photos etc of the species already in nz and those were the species allowed to be imported there are still alot of fish floating around who people didn't get pics of. It would be easy if maf went back to allowing a whole genus of fish say all of aulonacara (all peacocks) as you wont find a peacock that would survive in cold water. Kinda cracks me up because guppies etc are allowed in but they are actually living breeding and surviving in NZ waters. Good luck though let us know how you get on it might be easier than I think, what fish were you after?
  18. Glad to hear they're still ok What have you got in the new tank Doch? As for the problem if they're still swiming around grazing etc they cant be too bad but I would still be worried my africans dont go off their food except when there is something wrong or they're holding. With the exception of any new fish they can take a while to get used to my food and that but once they get into it they're fine, I to would suspect as tropheus has suggested as white stringy poo's aren't a good sign unless your feeding a heap of white worms as that can cause it too..
  19. If they're young even when older they should be ok provided your tank is big enough. The only problem I can see is if the convicts pair off and breed they could be hard on the other fish..
  20. They're not too bad it depends on the individual fish, I had my 2 pairs of golds in one tank and they were ok, the first pair layed and both of them chased both members of the other pair, but when the second pair went to lay all hell broke loose and I had to seperate them.. You could get away with 2 pairs in a 3ft tank, but if you wanted a nice display then stock it with a heap of males and it will be awesome
  21. How long have you been keeping fish for?
  22. prazi or metro Good luck getting some! Have to find a good vet..
  23. Check his profile.. Its not as simple as just working out its weight couriers go on volumetric weight which is worked out as L x W x H (in m) x 200 which will give you a volumetric weight in kg's which they will charge you for. I cut polyboxes down to around .30 x .29 (the 2 manufactured dimentions) and make it around .25 long so it works out to 4.35 volumetric kg's when once its packaged they usually only weigh 3kg's and if they were any bigger they would still weight 3kg's but they would charge for 10kg's freight due to volume and it costs twice as much. Most shipping companies charge in 5kg lots either actual weight (if your item is small and heavy) or volumetric weight (if your item is big and light ie a polybox) so either way they get ya
  24. Like I said just package them well, to ship those fish I would say courier would be $24 using nzpost which is who I mainly use or I use nzcouriers.. It is a bigger risk shipping larger fish which is why I try and sell fish smaller so they don't have the risk of shipping. Go in and buy some big bags double bag them stick them in the box with a heap of newspaper no need for a heatpad in this weather and then overnight courier them..
  25. They will be hard to ship at this size but basically it just equates to big fish use big bags and big polybox (and probably big $$ to send it) you have to take more care and ensure they are double bagged etc due to their size.
