Yeah ive spent a few years in blenheim and although I wasn't keeping fish down there I did keep an eye out and didn't see much around..
Maybe contacting the person who sold them to you would be a good place to start?
Thanks Cam, its a pic of my male fryeri I took the other day
Id go for WCMM or something easy like that, surely someone in Welly has some to spare, or else ill let you know when mine are sexable and get you a pair or 2 to try..
Or as suggested post what you like or already have and we can go from there.
Have you tried feeding some peas to see if it frees things up, or try epsom salt either way should relieve constipation or internal swelling.. Or she is just really pregnant!
Sorry to hear about that, is there any chance you can find another one? It sucks loosing fish it sucks even more when you cant find another one to keep them going..
Do you want to try and breed this fish in a community tank? If you have another tank just breed the danio's and take the parents out raise the babies easy to do.
WCMM's are easy to do just fill up a tank with plants I got a few and also had heavy losses to begin with too but have sorted it out and they're breeding now, not very prolific when the parents are left in the tank but still cool
How about dwarf cichlids, kribs, ram or some sort of appisto rams and appisto babies can be a little more difficult to raise but not hard to get them breeding.
Have you tried WCMM?
Just an update on the fishroom situation, I lined the door to get rid of the drafts got poly to overlap all the sides and gaps that I can.
Now the lowest I have seen the fishroom is 24 upper tanks still seem to be 24 sometimes higher, lower tanks get to 22-23ish so im happy with that I have livebearers and will be moving the mountain minnow tank down as well. The discus tank has a heater in it (which probably helps to keep the temp in the room up a bit) and I stick heaters in tanks when my gold rams breed because I kept loosing the babies which I put down to temp variations, thanks everyone for their input I will post updates as it gets colder outside..
I thought Chch water was supposed to be sweet for chemicals and stuff? I dont bother with dechlorinator anyway just chuck the hose into the tanks a couple of degrees temp drop wont hurt the fish..
At a guess it will be because the KH in your water is low making your PH relatively unstable and fish their waste excess food etc tend to turn water acidic.
If you want to keep your PH stable add some baking soda or something to raise the KH.
Was this fish beaten up at all? I have kept alot of africans and haven't seen any with swim bladder problems so I dont think its that common in them.. Im not sure though maybe ive just been lucky.
Does it sound like this?

Bloat causes swelling and can cause swimming problems.
You can do the courses through polytech etc and they are very easy I did all mine when I did all my courses at work. You also have to be registered to charge and I think there is some practical experience required, I am not too sure on that one as I work under my works license and don't charge anyone anything.
The motors wont be true 3 phase if they plug into single phase, I think what your referring to is how they split up the single phase AC to get a rotating magnetic field to start or keep it running. My motor theory is pretty rough as its been a few years since ive looked at it and I don't work on them at work. But if it plugs into single phase then its single phase.
To do electrical repairs on any single phase portable appliance and charge for it you have to have EST A (electrical service technician A), to do repairs and charge for fixing 3phase and fixed wired appliances you have to have EST A and B.
These courses are very basic and ensure you have a basic level of electrical knowledge, some sort of standard of work and know the basic tests to carry out to ensure an appliance is electrically safe.
I would say if your only doing mechanical repairs you might not need this but if you were charging for repairs and it all went wrong (ie someone got electricuted from something you had repaired) you may be liable.
A local guy I know who breeds them removes the eggs and has no problems as far as im aware (apart from risking his hands getting eaten). I haven't really talked too much about it because im not too interested in oscars but I know he's got his pair still because he wants to sell them so they obviously haven't killed each other, I guess like everything its down to the individual fish if you wanted to give them a go you should probably isolate everything else.
If their breeding tubes are different and they're both participating then its a good chance they're boy and girl.. Girls have broader bits to allow the eggs to come out boys have shorter and pointer bits.
You can remove them and raise them much the same as angel babies if you want or leave them too it, I guess it depends how much you want the oscar babies
Good luck and prepare for 1000's of oscars if you decide to raise them.
Yeah thats all the information they have on them seems strange how they can be imported and not have a specific scientific name. I wouldn't touch them but thats just me if you like them and want them in your tank go hard, weren't they like $30ea?
If you wanted Melo's then hold out a while and find a descent breeder who's breeding johannii. But I recommend doing that with all fish its very ha to find descent fish there are some crap ones coming through the wholesalers and some wholesalers breeding their own misnamed or dodgy fish, or buying the same misnamed or dodgy fish off local breeders. Judging by the size of those blue melo's I would say they're babies bred form the original imported lot.
Sounds like he's just being picked on discus are better in pairs that get along or larger groups to make sure you don't end up with a 3rd wheel that gets smashed up.
If its eating and not too sad just keep up your water changes and good food, and keep an eye out for any fungus or anything that can get into any wounds or torn fins. Have you tried any live food to get him eating? What colour are his poo's?
What melo's are they? The random "blue melo's?" Melo's get very agro you might not have enough fish with that plan to spread aggression, also I would touch those blue melo's as noone actually knows what they are..
