  1. Crushed coral looks good Its commonly used in african tanks to raise ph and hardness.. Its a crapy pic but I think it looks cool Sweet well id get rid of the others before sticking the crushed coral in might be less stress on them.. If it was easy to do id just siphon out the old substrate and stick the new stuff in..
  2. Are you keeping all those fish in the african tank? I would setup a large bucket or chillie bin or something with water from their tank in it a filter heater etc.. Take your tank outside clean it out stick your coral and stuff in it then move it back inside maybe half fill it stick a heater etc in and let it settle for a while then acclimatize the fish to the new tank, best way to do it is half empty the bucket and just siphon water from the tank into the bucket seems less stressful than bags.. Good luck with the tank, any idea what the "5 something else" might end up being yet?
  3. Awesome man exactly what I was looking for also for my swords got some nice albino ones and don't really want to go down the letting them drop in a planted tank and only have 5 survive route..
  4. Yeah that way can work have had people say its hard to know when to remove the parents though as you cant see the eggs under the marbles unless you can see under the tank.. Another thing people recommend is not having much water on top of the marbles/netting so the eggs have less distance to fall and less chance of getting eaten as they fall..
  5. I would make a breeding net (homes small enough the parents cant fit through but not really really small so eggs can still fall through, that takes up half to a quarter of your tank, separate the sexes and stick them in the net along with some plants.. The theory is they will breed and all eggs will fall through the holes in the netting and not be eaten.. Put some anti-fungus stuff in the water and raise them as per all the other egg scatterers. Of course you can fill up a tank with plants (your small planted tank might do) and leave them in there and remove them after they have bred, but they will likely eat alot of the eggs and its hard to know when they have actually bred so I would think you'll have limited success unless they dont egg their eggs/babies.. On another note lost 3 tiger barbs so far.. lol 2 died one jumped after I isolated it for smashing the remaining ones, so not much luck there!
  6. If you wanted to go for something a bit more exciting and colourful with a bit of personality you could try some of the larger africans.. Giraffes, dolphins and comp's commonly get to 15-20cm's (goto butterfly creek ), most other africans max out at 15 cm's with some haps getting larger.. Or go for frontosa.. But thats big money and your tank isn't big enough for a grown colony (takes years for them to get that big..) Really depends the colours you want, how much you have to spend, if you want it planted, what types of fish you have access too etc etc etc..
  7. how is that not g rated??
  8. Id leave the pictus they should be fine
  9. Yeah I have the same problem with my cichlids they're soo happy until you take them from the community tank and then they just sulk You could try and add some dither fish something cheap and easy WCMM or something like that to help them feel confident they're also very easy to catch when they breed.. I'm about to stick some gold rams in their own breeding tank and im sure they're going to pack a poop and hide all day too so yeah let us all know if anything helps
  10. man slappers you have one hell of a bad damm attitude..You did the same in my baby arrival thread...
  11. Mine are with peacocks yellows etc and even when breeding they let tje others push them around I have only seen demasoni be aggressive to their own kind which is why you keep large numbers of them and they're fine I personally think their bad rep is unjustified well maybe not unjustified they will attack their own type but maybe just misunderstood.. Have had people come out and see my tanks to buy fish and gone oh those stripy ones are the real agro ones thinking they're going to wipe out all the fish in their african tanks..
  12. Awesome its good to see they're doing well They grow pretty quick I have some from your batch left here im going to add into my colony when they're big enough not to become food for the dolphins and giraffe.. I like the plants all of my africans eat them though so any I add seem to just be food or uprooted and get chewed on until they're nothing or get stuck to filter intakes etc.. Looks like those ones are well attached
  13. Glad to hear all is well Win send us a text when your ready for visitors and we'll be over to meet her
  14. Yep they are bloody hard to catch thats for sure fast and small and very good at hiding im going to design some sort of trap to get them since they like to get into small places might be worth a try..
  15. I bred mailieri but sure transcriptus are similar Baby jullies will eat what the parents do They keep breeding and breeding but I had trouble when the babies got around 2cm's because the male kept chasing them away from the new babies and the female almost killed him for it.. So take the babies out when they get a bit bigger to keep the peace
  16. That tank looks awesome man Im glad to see the fish are doing well, how big are the dem's now?
  17. Yeah thats a pretty good price they're supposed to be easy to breed too
  18. lol the person probably didn't know it was bad there are plenty of places and people who will happily sell "small" goldfish for small bowls and tanks.. So people don't know its cruel..
  19. Malawi's, tangs and south american's Mainly the africans though
  20. Agreed my fish are in a heated room now and temp varies from 24 some cold nights (usually 26) up to 30 on a hot day (generally max 28) the only fish with a constant temp are the discus.. Everything else is fine dont stress too much, obviously if your fish are showing discomfort or gasping at the surface its too hot but if they're all happy and healthy leave them be
  21. Sounds like its all going well.. Regarding cycling your best to have it all running for a few days, but if you don't add any ammonia you wont cycle adding food could do it, I personally would wait a few days for everything to settle and pick one of the smallest fish you wanted to add or a guppy or something and add that it is so small it wont create a large bioload and the tank will cycle, if you have test kits keep an eye out but I doubt it will create anything that will make a difference, then slowly build up your stock a couple of fish a week or 2..
  22. Yeah sounds good They should be able to stand up for themselves and adjust to the PH.
  23. I had the same problem I usually started the filter by suction but tried that cap thing and now its got a mad leak really annoys me.. I haven't found a descent way to sort it out either im about to silicon something over the hole lol
