  1. I'm glad to hear that all is well with Mekhaela and Daf, I look forward to catching up with them when they get back online
  2. Tank is probably on the large side but they should be fine, usually a smaller one is better as they don't seek out food when young they just sit there and eat it when it falls in front of their face, however a bigger one will be more stable and take less time to foul.. Leave the meth blue until the fry have all hatched and left whatever it is they were laid on, it can be hard to do water changes to get rid of it while the fry are young and sensitve anyway so make sure you do it very gradually and match temp etc. I would just leave them be they will hatch and move around a bit when they're ready to, I have no idea how long usually 3 days for most egg layers. Remember not to feed them until they're fully free swimming.. Good luck!
  3. Hi Paul that tank looks great ive still got to make it out and see your tanks etc at some stage.. Any chance you can post a pic and stocking list of your african tank? I would love to see its progress.. Did you hear about the chilumba's?
  4. When I looked into it on this site http://www.cichlid-food-canada.com/info.html you can hover over the food and get the nutritional info, I was interested to see the difference between the cichlid formula and discus, from the pop up that came up I couldn't tell any difference in ingrediants the only difference I can see is the price and the fact they dont do discus in bulk.. It appears to me that NLS packaged the same product in a different smaller container with a higher price marketing it to the discus keepers who will be more likely to see something with a discus on it and spend whatever they want.. I got some NLS and im slowly getting my discus onto it from colourbits, frozen homemade food and whiteworms they're starting to get onto it, sounds like yours have a good diet As for quantities if they're eating it all its obviously sweet.. I am impressed with the quality of the NLS food the fish seem to eat it, I haven't seen any changes in colour (they claim you have to feed it exclusively for that to happen and I will never feed only one food) the pellets are very small and you have to chuck a few in but the fish seem to love it and its good to mix in with all the other foods I feed.
  5. Yep some of the girls learn how to eat while holding. I think as livingart said they just manage to work it through the babies in their mouths and eat it, they don't ever seem to eat enough to maintain any sort of condition but anything is better than nothing I guess
  6. lol no you should sell the red tops me me and johannes and we will live off the millions we make off them.. Yeah right! I would give them their own tank so there no chance of crossing and breed a few batches pass some on if I was you. I hope your enjoying your tank now everything is growing up
  7. And yes overstocking as such is good as it gives them a heap of targets However it can lead to alot of hybrids created due to the muddle of fish in there.. It wont matter if you dont take the babies out though.
  8. Sounds like a good mix However I agree with Mike as I first suggested watch the ice blues I used to sell alot of them and kept in touch with people only to find they got rehomed as they smashed everything in tanks even upto 6ft.. I recently sold all of mine as I got sick of the aggression and nothing else breeding successfully. I have to echo Johannes ill happily take a trio of the red top trewvassae I would like to see these guys more avaliable Wish id brought some when they were on the lists! Also your doing bloody well to sex 2cm socolofi? I cant sex mine and they're 6-7cm's its only when I see one of my "males" holding do I know lol You will also most likely end up with one dem if you only have 2 of them, they are pretty agro I have done alot of research on them and I even attempted to try and keep 6 and ended up with 1 guess that worked out well to have a big spare male as I added it with another 12 from a different source to get a better gene pull. If you only have 2 your probably not too worried if you loose one. I have an older pair of kadango's and they're push overs so who knows there, they will become the biggest in your tank and they're not in my tank maybe thats the difference, you will probably be ok as you have a heap of their own kind to smash up before your others get it.
  9. lol yeah the guy that came out to get my glofish was clueless was looking at all my tanks saying how clean they were and how cool my fish were didn't even bother looking in half of them no doubt he wouldn't have seen a RTC or a piranah or anything if I had one..
  10. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_R._Axelrod interesting reading
  11. If you have a large number of tetra's in the tank then id say its not a problem with fin nipping.. Most tetra's will all school together and chase each other around a bit, if they're getting pale and fins looking a bit ragged it could be stress? Have you tested your water lately?
  12. lol ill happily chirp up on those ones Sounds like David is onto it so ill take his word for it They are nice looking fish as adults good to see you got enough of them to have an attempt at breeding some and spreading them around.
  13. I was thinking the same thing however I put it down to being a bit of a sth american nube so kept my mouth shut
  14. Also check here for avi-verm http://www.hippo.co.nz/1884,0,0.mel Although SRVS should have this too.
  15. I thought prazi could deal with that? Win ring the SRVS ask to talk to the vet and explain the situation they are good there and happy to admit they don't know anything about treating fish and as long as you know what you want in what strenght and the dosage they shoud give it out and only charge a $5 dispensing fee.. Ask them to give you some and get some metro hit them with that at the same time If you wanted some metro to try that asap give me a yell I have a few tabs here you can borrow and get some more later.
  16. lol dont you wish There are alot of fish coming in like that fusco's livingstonii and giraffes seem to be all on the last lot imported as giraffes and they are quite different fish..
  17. Fair enough man. I think it comes down to where they are getting their fish from, if they could source a whole lot from a supplier and get what you wanted im sure they would do it, give them a call and see what they can do
  18. Thats the whole idea of the thread but noone has seen any of the ones identified so far.. David R if you want something thats on the list contact redwoods and they will try and get it, if you saw some in Napier why don't you own them already I cant help with either of those 2 don't think ive ever seen either
  19. Yes but there was nothing wrong with it.. They would have only ticked that because of the lack of sticker, honestly if you kick up so much of a stink ring them daily and annoy the crap out of them about it contact their governing body make such a stink its easier for them to fix it they will fix it.. Have you got your findings in writing and gone back to them yet?
  20. I would go back there and kick up a stink they destoyed your bottle at the very least they owe you a replacement the same as what you had or a refund of the repalcement price to you.. I would be very *insert word here* off about this happening I hate being ripped off or treated like an idiot. Is there some sort of organisation that is under a governing body, you know how there are like master builders and plumbers and all that sort of stuff? I would jump them and go straight to them kick up such a stink that they have to give in and fix it. Say you have a heap of fish keeping friends and they will all stop going there, say you'll write a complaint in the local paper etc etc. Surely if this place is supposed to be operating under these rules they must legally have to have a copy of them on hand? They had no right to take your stuff maybe you should have called the cops saying they had stolen your bottle and could provide no paper work to justify it. If all that doesn't work maybe goto your local community law centre and ask their advice I wouldn't let it go. Good luck tihs sort of stuff really annoys me it happens so much and the reason it happens is because people let it go, or they believe the crap and spend $$ at the place.
  21. lol didn't this thread disappear fast With absolutly no potential of finding any of these fish.. Maybe it is as sad as I thought that we may have lost a heap of species in NZ as people haven't kept them going
  22. Jags do get that big and maybe the persons eyecrometre is out a bit and its actually a jag, but there would be no difference between the 2 as babies so it is possible who's prepared to shell out and see if it stops growing? lol
  23. I agree buy the biggest tank and discus you can afford.. Unless you buy a pair for your smaller tank, I have 2 that seem to be a pair at least they get on and the female lays eggs and they're in a 150L tank with a mix of other fish they get water changes every week sometimes 2 and they're fine seem to be doing very well. Obviously im not going to get good growth rates or anyting like that ideally I should be doing more water changes but they're doing well so I dont care.. If your getting young discus you should probably do a bare bottom tank and try to do water changes every day or 2 and they are more sensitve id say dont buy them smaller than 30mm long, I guess you could get them smaller but only from a descent breeder like Ron who knows what they're doing, most breeders wont sell smaller fish because they're not likely to survive. Good luck and don't be scared they're not hard to keep if you do the research, get healthy stock to begin with and keep up with the maintenance.
  24. And then they go and change the import list exclude a heap of fish that would have no show of surviving in our waters? Unfortunately its the powers that be and you cant fight them no matter how much it doesn't make sense or is a complete contridiction..
  25. 5 x goldfish at 20-30cm's which is how big they will grow is too big for your tank sorry to say also agreed with evil a tall tank is worse for stocking than a long tank as the surface area is smaller.. Yes the petshop or your friends may stick 3 goldfish in a tiny bowl but that is just cruel and here we try and do whats best for the fish and educate people If you want lots of fish setup a pond or bathtub outside for your goldies and go tropical you can do a nice number of smaller fish in your tank..
