  1. The only one of your fish that may do ok in an african tank is the pictus.. You could adjust the ph slowely upto 7.5 or so and all the others would live the BGK may look after itself but the others wouldn't handle the aggression.. I went for africans because they're easy to keep, easy to breed and colourful with so much attitude.. With a 200L tank be very careful what you stick in it as some africans will outgrow it eventually. You could do a wicked demasoni/yellows/peacock tank
  2. Good idea to do your research maybe read and post here.. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewforum.php?f=32 http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/t ... corner.php Redwoods seem to get them in at a good price I really want to get some at slome stage too
  3. They're cool fish, some think they're ugly and plain but I liked them I would mix them but keep an eye on them if you have 6 of them hopefully they will pick on each other and not your other fish and remember they get big
  4. I have never kept them but have done a bit of research and just because I wouldn't do it doesn't mean it wouldn't work I think one of the breeders in Auckland breeds them in smaller tanks.... Don't be too disheartened others who have kept them may give you better news Is it redwoods that has them? And how much were they?
  5. I kept mine with the usual malawi's peacocks, mbuna etc.. Males go jet black but there colour does change with mood males also get bigger and females stay smaller browner and keep the stripes.. These guys have a rep for being mean and I have had friends have smaller ones wipe out their other africans and they moved them on, also the males get huge my male was 25cm's+ (so a big tank is needed eventually) he was well behaved but solo I suspect if I added females he will have ran my tank. Good luck I quite liked my male before I sold him
  6. Id say no lol send them upto me ive got a spare 5ft id love to stick some in.. I have seen them in tanks that small before but they can get pretty nasty so would probably recommend a bit more room, might be a good grow out for them if they're only small though.
  7. I have had a heater or 2 explode quite voilently before (they sprung leaks and water caused it) with no ill effects to the fish.. I would be going for something else possibly a bacterial bloom or filter die off for some reason.. Did the filter turn off for a long period when the heater exploded and the CB's or powerboard tripped out?
  8. lol use the poly man you saw my fishroom ill get the details for the free poly for you right now If I can find them on yellowpages online it sucks but the dogs somehow managed to eat the phonebook.. As for stick it up, I went out and brought some 2 1/2" nails to stick mine up lol without thinking and then realised the poly would just right straight off, so I cut up little squares of ply and stuck the nails through them and they seem to do a good job of ensuring the nail doesn't pull through.
  9. I just rinse it and chuck it into my tank, if I want it to sink straight away I soak it outside and let it get water logged first.. Also if there are any nasties a good soak will allow them to leach out..

    Split?

Yeah I don't think there are enough members to justify it here.. I like to read most of the posts anyway and would just create more work for mod's etc look at the number of posts we actually get in the cichlid section and we don't get that many anyway..
  11. Its a shame you can't afford to get a bigger tank more like 3-4ft then you will have alot more options that will probably make you alot happier with what you have setup.. Your tank is really only suitable for a pair of lelupi/pulchers/jullies/brichardi, and pretty much your only option for getting one is to buy babies and grow them out hopefully saving the odd ones and selling them off. You may get away with yellow's but that would be about it and its ptobably not that cool for them as they get bigger, IMO a tank with just yellows would be quite boring but get a larger tank and you can mix a few different types.
  12. Awesome looking fish Glad they're breeding for you guys lol maybe one day ill get some
  13. Cool looking fish I look forward to seeing babies floating around in the future
  14. Hi and welcome.. Im kinda local and there is a few of us around if your ever calling through bulls feel free to call in and say hi have a look at my tanks most of them are cichlids so may not interest you.. I think that wetpets had green swords the other day. And im interested in where the new petshop is in Wanga's too might be worth a look sometime
  15. Glad to hear all worked out well Just a side note with dragons bloods if you have any that are munted or don't colour up please return them to the bottom of the food chain I know its probably tempting to keep them all and not feel mean or whatever but some of them may not throw true (I guess you could argue who is defining what that is as they are hybrids?).
  16. Yeah it would be awesome if we did get fish imported with exact varients.. I think these ones differ from the ones that I got off the import list I have from what I can tell 2 different strains of them, one with the white blazes that stay on the tops of the dorsal fin with mature, one where the white blazes are there whent he male is small and grow out with age, both are awesome fish and true to every pic of a jacob I have seen.. I believe these ones came from OOA so aren't the latest lot off the import list and it appears they are different maybe just from a different source when they were imported but who knows either way keep them seperate and pure and they're awesome fish
  17. Nice fish I cant decide if they're much different to the strains that I have I think they're more yellow.. And for Ant only the males will colour up like that females will be brown, you can keep a trio of peacocks and yellows together if your tank is big enough..
  18. Hi and welcome There are a few fish keepers around here if you ever call through bulls give me a pm and call through and say hi..
  19. I have gone 4 high in my fishroom and the tanks on the floor are hard to maintain and I have to get on a chair to get into the top tanks.. But it is very effecient on space.. I have 4 level stands you can get from any hardware shop the one I have is the smaller one and each shelf measures around 75cm's by 30ish and can hold 150kg's.. You can get bigger versions which may or maynot suit you when they're on special its probably going to work out cheaper than buying wood and mucking around making them..
  20. I think they are meaning Wainuiomata??
  21. Best to post this in the cichlids section Your tank is probably too small for most african's you could do a pair of jullies or pulcher/brichardi/lelupi or maybe a pair or trio of yellows but not much more than that and yellows might be pushing it.. I would reccommend a large 3ft min for the smallest long term african tank that would work and I would stock that with yellow's demasoni and a trio of peacocks. Im sure others will disagree I brought a tank full of fish out of a 2ft tank once there would have been around 8 adult yellow's a large (20cmish) female giraffe and 2 male peacocks so it can be done but IMO its not really that fair and if they get agro there isn't much room for them to hide. I breed most of my peacocks in 2ft tanks filled with rocks but I usually have dividers on hand in case it gets messy and also have more tanks to remove them and try in bigger tanks if need be..
  22. Wendy's But if I had to choose from the options you cant beat a double whopper from BK but I also like KFC.. Mcd's is pretty crap definate last..
  23. lol I guess you can go as hard out as you want to on everything.. I just try and keep my ph above 7 but at the end of the day I don't actually measure it and everything is happy and breeding so no need for me to stress Thats a random mix you have mystic it never ceases to amaze me what works and what doesn't there are so many variables that determine if fish will get on or not.
  24. meth blue (that is abbreviated but any petshop worker will know it) is from petshops its a blue dye, best to catch the fish and hold it over a bucket or something of water as the stuff stains like nothing on earth and if you get it on your carpet or on your hands it will stain, also if you stick enough in your tank it will stain all the silicon an ugly blue colour you will never get out.
