  1. Yeah that sucks I had no idea they would eat that much crap Its really sad that the animals were here first and living happily and we come along and stuff it all up for them they don't deserve to suffer.. However I guess I really have no right to complain because I do live in this world and contribute to it however indirectly that may be..
  2. lol and with their highly aggressive tendancies they probably wont find many supporters willing to pay for their quarantine etc
  3. lol yeah as I said of course they prefer different conditions but mine seem to breed in the same tanks as the african's (tanks filled with limestone coral sand etc) so it obviously doesn't bother them too much so no need to stress I always recommend them as they work for me.. Of course if you want to be a purist then its no good and you might have to do the hard work cleaning out the tank yourself its OTY I guess
  4. Awesome im glad these fish came in and are being bred lol means im likely to be able to get some at some stage Good work amazonian
  5. lol well trying again the gold bred with a blue again today (has bred another time since this thread but was on the bottom of the tank) I had to watch them today and put rocks around where they were trying to bred to get them to lay on something I could remove which worked now they're in another tank with a filter air stone and meth blue fingers crossed
  6. Sounds like you nailed that on the head pretty quickly Gasping at the surface is a sign of lack of oxygen or filthy water... It pays not to rely on the movement from a spray bar as they tend to fall into the tank and not do too much Also fish can gasp if the temp is too high (ie heater stuck on).. Good luck I hope you fixed the problem, your tank is probably bordering on overcrowded now which isn't a problem provided you have heaps of filtration and heaps of aeration
  7. Sounds good im using nova baby #1 for my cockatoo babies at the moment, remember not to overfeed them they are tiny and don't eat stuff all when newly free swimming Agreed gradual water changes need to be made however make sure you do them slowly and try to make temp etc a bit more than with adults as the babies can be sensitive.. Good luck and get some photo's up when you can
  8. Ring around insulation places I got all my poly free in 3.2 x 1.2m sheets varying thicknesses and it doesn't burn..
  9. lol im sure they will get spread around.. My mother is out with half of her batch today the other half have stayed in the pot there must be 50-60+ of them so thats pretty good for their second spawn.. I probably should have saved the first.. Just because its more on topic here than in the other thread here are some photo's male is getting more and more colourful by the day so is alot nicer than pictured.
  10. Yeah bristlenoses are awesome in African tanks I am yet to have one killed And they even used to breed in my display tank but for some reason they just stopped a few months back and haven't bred for ages
  11. I posted some pic's of mine in my gold ram thread Mekhaela's would be fine if anyone is wondering what they look like, very nice fish thats for sure It will be interesting to see how the babies colour up with the mixed gene's the parents have..
  12. Awesome yeah I think they're relatively hardy My latest batch is huge going to be a massive spawn swimming around soon..
  13. lol man would love a 6ft that size its huge Would make a great african tank..
  14. There are pro's and cons to a central filtration system as far as I can see it to me issues with it were, running all tanks on the same water means you cant have fish with different water types in the system, it can be complicated to setup, and the main reason which has caused problems with people I know who have these setups is disease. It wont take much just that female you've been looking for ages for for a lone male that you just cant wait to add and boom all your fish are sick and it takes alot of med's to treat the whole system. Also even if you qtine all fish somethings show no sign's (worms) and you tie up alot of fish. Also I have thought that with overflows alot of baby fish would struggle not to get washed down them? For all the reasons above (and the fact my fishroom is a dogs breakfast of random sized/shaped tanks stacked all around the place) I have gone for a heated room and individual filters, will be trying to find a kick ass airpump and go for all air filters at some stage, but these aren't cheap.. I am sure that central filtration systems are awesome when running well and if you do it or not depends on how you feel about all the potential problems.

    My tank :)

lol I have been collecting them for a long time now so would hope to have some nice ones Thanks for all the comments everyone for some reason when I look at it I see all the improvements to be made (I started making a stand for it 8 months ago lol).. Get some more big tanks and get some africans they're awesome you wont regret it! Caper overseas trip for me is to Timor..
  17. Your tank is too small for one giraffe long term so don't add anymore... I wouldn't worry about his/her behavour I have had giraffes do random things, also don't add kadango's they get too big for your tank also.. Things you can go for are maybe some zebra's (luck of the draw if they get too agro for your tank) maybe some demasoni.. Or as already stated a trio or more of peacocks but only one type unless your going to try and do all male. Good luck
  18. Id say they just have a little irritation I would stress unless it really bothers them and it happens alot or the fish shows other symptoms.. If it is gill flukes a salt water bath is supposed to be quite good.
  19. lol marking their turf? Thats a new one It depends how much they do it and how violenly it happen's some scratching is normal but alot is not..

    new tank

Feel free to call through and say hi before I go if you want
  21. Yeah for sure the more the better.. However I reckon one FX5 or aquarius 2400 would be sufficient at least to start with More filtration can be added at a later date if needed.. Obviously if money is no object then 2 large filters would be wicked, africans don't really mind too much flow.

    new tank

Hey Deno glad to hear your getting into africans, where are you living? Have you seen the photo's of my tank it may give you some idea of stocking? As for buying fish off me I only have afra and jullie marlieri left I have stopped breeding fish and stopped growing them out because im off overseas for 3 months soon and as lovely as my wife is she wont run my whole fishroom breeding programs and look after my daughter/dogs etc
  23. FX5 or aqua one 2400.. Or 2 x jebo 819's or aqua one cf1200's. I used one fluval 404 on a 540L tank reasonably stocked and it did the job but that was underfiltered and I did descent weekly water changes, I went to an FX5 and haven't looked back, I only clean it out every 2-3months and it filters so well If your lucky you can pick one up quite cheaply too.
  24. Had thunder lightning and heaps of rain here last night too but it appears to have cleared and our garage door power and fences are still intact (this time last year had a fence blow over in the wind). Hope everyone in the naki is alright..
