    My tank :)

Thanks everyone Tropheus - tank is 5 x 2 x 2 holds around 540L full but would say only 450 or so taking into account the huge pile of rocks and sand etc.. Filtration is fluval FX5 this probably takes the capacity up a bit and turns over around 2500lph so does a good job, I might add another 404 or something before I go overseas just for an extra bit of filtration.. Bulldog - the best way to get over fighting in african tanks is to heap in the fish, there are fish that dont get along but there is enough room and hiding places they don't kill each other, there used to be 6male dem's but 3 dominant males have killed the rest. And yeah feeding time is difficult its hard getting food through the glutten's at the top down to the smaller fish and frontosa at the bottom but it gets down there in the end..

    new tank

Hey yeah I agree, you need to steal some media from your other filter adding water won't do much.. Also once you start your tank you have to stock up slowly to allow the filter to adjust and keep cycling

    My tank :)

Thanks Yeah its probably bordering on overstocked to be honest but good old FX5 hauls some serious ass so should be fine.. lol yeah kribs are trying to breed and watched the male take on the smaller male johannii and win so they can handle themselves Like I said they got chucked in there because I got sick of them shreading community fish.. There is multiple fish holding in there all fishfood Watched the female dolphin spit 60+ babies yesterday everyone went nuts.. And empress male is already quite red so cant wait for him to grow up, it will be quite exciting coming back from overseas..
  5. Good luck finding him a home we have 2 already and one of the neighbours dogs thinks it lives here and keeps digging into the section to hang out with our dogs so cant have anymore.. We only have 2 because we took one to nurse back to health and rehome and he didn't ever leave so don't want to go back down that track.. Anyway good luck again and good on you for doing the right thing

    My tank :)

I have stuck most of my fish in my big tank in preparation for going overseas and for some reason I am compulsively taking photos of it so thought I would share Stocking list is 4 red zeb's 1m 3f 4 ps sacolofi (unsure on sexes these aren't flash so haven't bred them) 5 dragons bloods peacocks1m 4f 8-9 jacob's peacocks 2-3m 5 or so females 3 red empresses 1m 2f 1 male baenshi 1 random male peacock (supposed to be chilumba but is a cross) 4ob peacocks 1m 3f 2 fryeri 1m 1f 2 kadango's 1m 1f 1 big male front 8 yellows 1m 3f 4 babies 4 pulchers breeding pair of kribs (got sick of these killing community fish) Pair of jullie marlieri 6 dolphins 3m 3f 4 johannii 2m 2f 7-8 ob zebra's (unsure on sexes) 11 young electra's 1 bigish giraffes (have 11 more growing out to add when big enough) 10 demasoni (3 females in fishroom holding/recovering) 3 cobalt zebras 1m 2f 3 lithobates 2m 1f 2 afra 1m 1f various bristlenoses Anyway heres some pic's (excuase the crap stand I ruined it) I stuck this poor little guy in here when he was smaller and he got his tail eaten off by something but survived so I netted him out grew him out a bit and now have added him back he seems to get along alright Male empress
  7. Yeah all africans can and will cross breed given half a chance, it is very hard to make statements about what will and wont because people will believe it and try it.. You are just lucky that at this stage in your tank everything is working, it is very rare for all the males to be at the same stage in the tank that when they breed they can defend their females, I wonder if this will always be the case as your fish mature I mean 1-2 years old isn't that old and fryeri especially can get big and do have a reputation (although ive never seen it in mine either) http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/s_fryeri.php
  8. Gutted I have been ripped multiple times but have had some good deals I hope that you manage to sort it, and I have to add geeze look at their feedback I would have run a mile before sending them $1.. I was under the belief that trademe and also the police wanted nothing to do with things like this? Even though you have had money stolen I think it happens so much that they aren't willing to help hopefully with your brother being a cop you may have more luck with it.. Good luck sorry to hear you got stung.
  9. I have hundreds of cross bred fish result in my display tank but they are left to be eaten or if they make it destroyed.. All breeding is done in a seperate tank fish are removed from the main tank put in their own tank bred and then parents are put back in display tank and another batch of parents stuck in the breeding tank, its the only way to make sure they're pure. Your fish are quite different and the odds of producing hybrids are unlikely I watch the fish in my tank breeding and have seen 3 males (kadango, maleri male and ob peacock male) all breed with one female peacock and she held full term, it is always a risk in a mixed tank and if you want to sell or pass on any babies you cant really chance the fact that they bred true.
  10. Yeah that would work.. While I was at it with the peacocks I would just get half a dozen youngsters grow them out there is no point in not having females they wont cross breed with the yellows/dem's and it helps the male's keep colour and also if down the line you want to keep the babies you have the option
  11. If your tank is 220L you need to stay away from the bigger hap's giraffes comp's etc.. Sometimes you can also get in trouble with zebra's and melo's but again might get lucky with them as your tank is not that small. Dem's yellows and some peacocks would work, however I would recommend staying away from all males I have had issues with them getting along in smaller tanks and have even had problems in my 540L tank with male peacocks scrapping all day and not colouring up etc.. That is just my experience and you might get lucky though Dem's are grumpy and best kept in large groups 12+++ you can do that many in your tank size easily lol flick me the 1m 3f I need more girls in my colony.. I have a pair of jullie marlieri in my big tank and they get along fine with the mbuna and peacocks, marlieri are a bit more colourful than transcriptors but each to their own..
  12. Yeah friggen mbuna are crafty little buggers
  13. What type of club is it? You might be able to find some sort of fundraiser based on the type of club that could be fun.. Sausage sizzles are good car washes etc, maybe run a few trademe auctions or garage sales with donated goods from members..

    Gold Severums

Awesome! looks good How big are they?

    Gold Severums

Awesome glad to hear you got them after all the issues Sounds like they're working out well cant wait to see some pictures.. Most cichlids make good parents just don't stick your hand or any other fish you want in the tank
  16. Yeah these ones are cool They are a cross between the tripple red (red fin's) and wild caught, so there is every chance some of their offspring could be tripple red's as both of the parents would be tripple red carriers (in my very simple understanding of genetic's). Yeah the new guy at animates is a good guy and knows what he's doing and is only happy to help out and actually treat fish and not sell them etc well worth a visit
  17. Pretty sure he's read that Thats probably where he's getting the med advice from.. i have used metro it worked on mbuna but not on the tropheus and the article states that clout is more effective and curing, metro only good for stopping the spread..
  18. lol oh yeah I don't have a chance of getting a pic of the bitenatta they're sneaky little buggers even with other fish in the tank
  19. I thought the same after reading about it, it seems like good stuff.. Very helpful when you keep tropehus etc It seems were very sheltered you can buy it over the net for stuff all in america http://www.aquariumguys.com/clout.html http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/P ... catid=4724 I started looking through the list of allowed animal drugs on the maf site and got bored think it might be under all sorts of different names, or because its a specialised fish drug noone has bothered getting it approved and imported it for sale. Good luck let us know how it goes
  20. lol I got some pics mine aren't shy at all probably because they used to be in the community tank and are happy as still The tank before I took all the other fish out.. Pair and the pot they laid in Female PAir again Again Crappy photo of female but you can see the fry.. I didn't know we had a good shop here? lol Animates is getting better though a new guy has taken over and the tanks look way better fish all healthy etc worth a look if you haven't been in for a while The cockatoo's are wild x tripple red (not hybrids for any busy bodies they're the same fish) if the ones at wetpets are the same as the ones I have then I would recommend them the breeder breeds awesome fish and they are doing very well.
  21. Yeah cockatoo's are cool Hope yours spawn too for you guys soon Mekhaela.. Sorry no spare heaters need them all for my tanks that I bring inside while im away.. Seriously doubt the rams will spawn while im away well they'll spawn but with the swordtails, cories and others in the tank the babies will have stuff all chance of survival.. Cool cockatoo's in the shops What shop was that and how much were they? I wonder if they came from the same place as ours or if they're imported..
  22. Yeah it sucks oh well will keep trying The cockatoo's spawned in a community tank once I noticed the wrigglers I removed all the other fish I was trying to grow them up a bit before putting them in their own tank to breed but guess they decided they were big enough If you want to come out and have a look your welcome too, ill try and get some pic's the cockatoo's are wicked..
  23. Yeah it sucks, oh well they get a 3month break from me trying with them while im overseas soon Maybe just letting them chill out and try by themselves will help them sort it out will try them in their own tank at a later stage.
  24. I lost them all Same stage as I always do.. They hatch then a few days later all dead who knows what happens have tried all sorts to get them to live.. The male spawned with the other female the other day but layed on the bottom of the tank so I left the lights on but they were gone overnight.. I didn't get panduro's but got some very nice cockatoo's that are cruising around their tank with a wee batch of babies at the moment
  25. Rumour has it you can give it a wee snip a little longer than a normal guppies bits stick him in a nice clean tank with some meth blue and let it heal and then it should work
