  1. You could fill it with really fine media to polish the water.. It would be alot easier to clean out than pulling down an entire FX5
  2. lol I get the impression that Phill has no real idea what he is talking about and probably wont post in this thread anyway so we will never know
  3. That tank looks awesome! It will only look better as the plants grow.. I hope that Ron is working his magic with your discus and they will be happy in there
  4. I am pretty sure that the "other site" he was mentioning was to cichlid forum where Phill has suggested that he got his ID from..
  5. Sweet as when you said breeding group I had assumed they were breeding for you.. How big is the tank you have them in? Looks like a good setup so far and sounds like you are already tracking down the shells so will only get better I tried all sorts of pots and stuff but they won't have a bar of it they only want the shells..
  6. What sort of ratio do you have in your colony David and how many fry have they been having from each spawn?
  7. HI matto HFF recently advertised they still had 3 for sale.. I got lucky with my 3 and got a pair so maybe get in touch with them if you want some?
  8. Doesn't seem to match either photo on the profiles nor can I find a thread discussing them either?
  9. Yeah they are cool fish thats for sure I have some fry viewtopic.php?f=13&t=45830 and looks like the pair have gone again too
  10. We use energy online at the moment it is reasonable on rates but the big saver is a 20% prompt payment discount meaning you save a stack off what they actual unit and daily charges are just by paying on time.. Another option we considered was power shop but didn't like the winter prices going up..
  11. I haven't been through them all but there might be some good info using the search function search.php?keywords=drilling+tank&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search I searched for "drilling tank" but other searches may bring up more..
  12. They love eating most plants For the most success you can try anubais and java ferns as both them are a quite hard, but very slow growing in hard water.. Some of my fish still eat both of these though so it depends on your fish..
  13. Be aware that if you are importing to sell you can (should) be paying customs fees on it, and also I think I remember that it has to be (at your cost) treated with radiation or something like that when you bring in larger quantities..
  14. Oh cool good to know, I probably wouldn't recommend them for community tanks at all really.. But that is just me and I have found mine to be aggressive. I mean not that much compared to other africans but still more aggressive than what I would put in a community tank. Even profiles on the net regard them as aggressive http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... hp?id=1536, but I guess it might work.. http://reviews.ebay.com/Julidochromis-G ... 0004073350 I did some reading up on them when I looked at them and the pair can fight when moved but I guess that depends on the pair and how well they get along etc..
  15. I have found the Maleri (very similar fish) to be very hardy the only issues I have had are with aggression between adults or within a pair (female is very aggressive to male) but have my pair in a 2ft tank now and they are fine. They can be sensitive to water quality so making sure you don't overfeed and keeping up with regular water changes helps apart from that I don't know what you could be doing wrong to kill them. They don't need a PH at 8.5, 7.5 will be fine and certainly wont kill them, I sold some to a guy who kept his in mildy soft water with a neutral ph and they still grew up and bred fine.. I would be cautious about buying an adult pair, jullies are known for packing spats between pairs when you move them obviously there are ways to do it but at first I would add them to a tank with other robust cichlids so they have some fish to pick on together rather than turning on each other.
  16. You can just leave him on his own if you wanted.. Personally I would take him to your LFS and trade him or sell him on to someone with a bigger tank with some bigger more robust fish that can handle what angels are like and start again with the smaller tank.. But that is just my person opinion
  17. As always awesome pics and fish
  18. Drop the temp a bit and do no water changes for a few weeks and feed them less, then increase the temp and do lots of water changes lots of good quality food.. It works for alot of the amazon type fish as they usually spawn in the rainy season ie when they get lots of good quality fresh water and lots more food..
  19. I would get rid of the angel fish or keep him as a loner fish in a 60L tank, it isn't big enough for more than 1 angel or possibly a pair, but generally I have found angels to be quite nasty and he would most likely deal to any other angels you added and eat any neons or guppies etc you added as well if he is big enough..
  20. Yeah they are the same fish just both highly line bred to give specific traits so a cross between the 2 would be advantageous in introducing new genes to either line. Without knowing what the genes do I would guess you would get a large number of normal blue rams out of that cross but they would carry the long finned and electric blue gene crossing offspring would result in some elecric blues and some long finned babies. But putting offspring back to the parents would be the best as you would get the largest amount that exhibit the traits you want and they would be hardier from the introduction of new blood. Of course without knowing how the genes work it is just guess work but the cross would soon tell you
  21. They are supposed to be a colony type fish but can go alright in pairs but like everything in life you cannot believe everything you read on the internet it is just a wait and see.. When I first got them the 2 I have now were nasty to the 3rd one so I had "her" (I think it was a girl) separated and in a guppy trap the first night, I forgot to turn off the light and the guppy trap sunk (I had a shell and some sand in it) and I found her dead in the morning. I was very surprised as I followed all the recommendations having them in a 140L tank lots of shells and other hiding places etc.. I know 2 people with 6 of these in a colony and both of them have had no problems with the colony situation although one has said that they were spawning but females started fighting over the same shell which appeared to put the breeding female off..
  22. Yeah they are wicked little fish, one I have been wanting to see in the country for a long time so very glad they have bred, I know there are a number of larger colonies with experienced keepers and as I have found they are pretty easy to breed so here is hoping they become common here.. I gave the fry a feed of microworms last night which they have eaten and have BBS on which I am hoping to feed them tonight. I also managed to count 21 when I transferred them so there is a few more than I first expected which was good I was only hoping to get 10 to grow out for another colony for me.. The male and female are not friends at the moment I just found the female beat up floating in the corner of the tank so had to separate her seems the male has taken exception to the disappearance of the fry. I might have to setup a 4fter for 2 2-3cm fish lol.
  23. My fishroom is flooded due to a stupid Jebo filter.. But apart from that all good here, although we have had a fair bit of rain today..
  24. Oic you can find as much info as you need using the search function, I know you "don't have time to look through lots of info" but it is all there and searching "painting backgound" or something like that will surely bring it up..
  25. Thanks everyone I didn't do much to get them to breed, so far they seem really easy to breed so I am pretty sure there will be plenty of babies out there soon Now to raise them..
