  1. The genetics of the beardies in NZ is a lot more diverse than for the leps.
  2. I think some people worry too much about breeding unrelated leos. If they all had the same father about 3 generations back they are all pretty related. When you look at native geckos they live in very small locations and are very inbred without problems that I am aware of. I guess that is why there are so many variations amongst them. I try to out breed where possible but only a certain amount is possible, particularly if you want to improve stock. Agree with Nav
  3. I had one in a freshwater CO2 injected plant tank which was working well before the shakes. They do have a limited life but it is the probes that are the problem. If you can get one with replaceable probes (and get some spares) might be the way to go.
  4. If people have other morphs it is unlikely they would admit to it on here for fear of a visit from burglers or MPI. A small gene pool would make it easier to get two recessives together but if someone started selling really exotic morphs I think they should expect a visit from MPI. Selective breeding is bringing out some nice looking yellows but I am not aware of others. One step at a time.
  5. There are easier ways of getting natural thyroxin
  6. I have not grown banana plant emersed so can't say. Caesar is pretty clued up.
  7. Considering that it wasn't many generations ago that they all had the same father I would't expect anything too spectacular.
  8. Went on a biology field trip to the west coast when at high school and heard the train go crunch crunch then stopped. Teacher pulled a pocket knife from his pocket and said. "All stay here" and lept out of the train. It took a while down the track before he told us he had been cutting throats. The train had run over a mob of sheep and he had put himself through varsity by working as a shepard on back country farms. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
  9. Imported a lot of killies as well but they get hammered by the maf man so they can be expensive.
  10. We have a ranunculus down this way that we used to hook out of the river and sell to the Aucks many moons ago but it did better in cooler water and that was not the leaf shape as I recall. I am not sure of the correct name but we used to call it aquatica. Some of the Ranunculus sp. are sold in the bog plant section of the nurseries but it may be a bit early for them yet. Someone want to grow one emersed and flower it?
  11. Probably pinched from the local nursery.
  12. They don't have the right rootstock for anubius
  13. The grow wool on plants is inert and does nothing for your plants but restrict the root development. It is used as a holding media when growing with hydro You are right however with the fact that they may carry good bugs. How about a compromise and remove the wool and rinse it in water to be added to the tank.
  14. Welcome and enjoy your time here.
  15. I just use light bulbs for locusts and crickets.
  16. All of the Litoria sp. are tree fros so they love to climb rather than spend all day in the water like an aquatic
  17. I have a very accurate and responsive digital thermometer that I find handy. Your enclosures are big enough that you will be able to get a range of temperatures in each enclosure and the lizards have more sense than us so they will go where it is best for them.
  18. I put my thermostat probes up near the top as hot air rises if there is no fan.
  19. You can change the temperatures so that you swap the backup every so often.
  20. I was using them to control a 4 ft tank divided into 6 parts with a bare tank bottom and a below tank heating mat of 300 watts as well as a 4 foot planted tank with sand media and heavily planted, with an undertank 300 watt heating mat. The control on the bare tank was pretty good (hysteresis about 1 degree), but the sand I discovered needed to be evenly spread and not too deep or the hysteresis extended considerably (probably about 5 degrees)
  21. I have built and repaired many tanks and believe me, it would be ten times easier for him to build a new tank from scratch than to dismantle and rebuild this one. Many people just price themselves out of repairs to avoid them. He must be feeling sorry for you so good luck.
