  1. How much salt per litre of water do people use to hatch brine shrimp and do you add anything else (my last lot didn't hatch too well)
  2. It sounds like a swim bladder problem and that is usually too late by the time you spot it. I have never had the problem, I suspect because when I was breeding them they were in a heated fish house and the air was the same temperature as the water and also moist. This is hard to achieve in an unheated room and may be the cause at an early age when the swim bladder is developing.
  3. I have a large pleco with my adult turtles as well as guppies which were intended as turtle tucker but move too fast and have now grown up and had babies of their own which have also survived. The pleco has grown up whith the turtles since they were all babies. The only fights are between the turtles.
  4. If you are doing a lot you should wear a face mask as inhaling the dust is very bad for the health
  5. I think every tank is different but I have one 4 ft tank with a vertical heater each end and when it is heavily planted it layers and will be 2-3 degrees lower on the bottom. This is fixed with a small filter at the bottom. It is only a problem when heavily planted ( I guess it restricts the flow)
  6. I use river sand from the garden shop--good for growing plants
  7. Only a hot summer, Sagittaria will take colder temperatures
  8. I have seen glaziers use those narrow belt sanders.
  9. You can use sandpaper as suggested (USE A SANDING BLOCK TO SAVE THE FINGERS). I use an old emery stone---works a treat.
  10. Your chances of getting lots of babies from males would not be good. Do you have adult females?
  11. Not all heaters are guaranteed to be completely submersed so they will be upright to keep the top out of the water.
  12. It will grow in a pond over summer.
  13. I tried to get rid of some with copper sulphate at about 20 times the dose used to kill snails (was after them as well) and they came up out of the gravel then went back down again. I don't think it thinned them out at all. Hardy little blighters.
  14. I don't know but it looks pretty inert in the stick and all you are doing is melting it and letting it reset.
  15. Now that you mention it opaline is a gold/blue cross isn't it? (Shows how long it is since I bred gouramis)
  16. What sort of sword do you have? I use the JBL micronutrient balls as they provide the micronutrient to the roots of heavy feeding plants like swords. If you move swords the plant will normally loose all the existing roots and grow a whole new root system This will cause a relatively dormant period and may make the plant short on nutrient until it gets re established.

    Peat???

You may find that if your water is hard it will neutralize the acidity of the peat. There are tanins and other minerals that some fish like released from the peat (or a tea bag). Some plants like peaty, soft acid water and others do not.
  18. The solvent is methyl ethyl ketone which has a distinctive smell. Make sure the lid is put back on tightly or you will only get to use it the once. The best joints are made by putting the adhesive on both halves, pushing together fully and giving a quarter of a turn. I asked a retired plumbing inspector.
  19. V. spiralis is called that because the flower stem spirals, not the leaf. V. gigantea is gigantic. I used to sell it to the shops years ago before it was made a class A noxious weed. It was growing in some of the lakes in the North Island. It was cut off short and was still about 2 metres long and would have been 5 - 6 times as wide as the one being sold. That one is quite legal.
  20. I feed mine a whole slice of luncheon and I would replace the cloth with a piece of clear glass big enough to cover the food. This will keep them damp and allow you to see what is going on. They need to be damp, not wet; cool and in the dark. The usual reason people lose them is because they get to hot. I have mine in wooden boxes which breath, I have had no success with plastic containers.
  21. If the female is blue and the male gold they will be a cross not blue, unless blue is dominent in which case you will get blue split to gold.
  22. The ones I saw looked like the system worked OK.
  23. I suspect that may also apply to imported guppies.
