  1. Because the more suspended solids in the water being treated the less UV penetration.
  2. Not much deters mice when they are hungry other than mouse proofing.
  3. When I built my fish house I applied for a (then) building permit for the importation, quarantine and breeding of fish and they tried to get me to change the application but I insisted it stay that way. After breeding fish for many years I applied for quarantine and one of the conditions (as per the existing standard) was that I had to get confirmation of Local Authority approval and it was a bit difficult to decline when I pointed out that the Building Permit was issued by them for that purpose and therefore had existing use rights. It helps to be working for another Council at the time and they cannot bluff then.
  4. After reading the standard it becomes clearer why not many people are doing it.
  5. I would suggest that if you are serious about creating a quarantine facility you should get the standard and also apply for a building consent from your Local Authority for the purpose of: "the importation, quarantine and breeding of fish," and get the written consent of the Regional Council for the discharge of effluent to the ground. Then construct a building that meets the requirements of Maf (that shed will not) Any building that is less than 10sqm and one story high does not require a building consent if it is at least the same distance from the boundary as it is high (the one in the picture is not) unless it is for certain purposes like what you propose. (a garden shed doesn't, a quarantine facility does). In summary: You will need to comply with the Requirements of Maf (NZS 154.02.06), your Local Authority (Building Act and RMA), your Regional Authority(RMA) and you will need to be listed in the gazette. Most of the above will require site visits for which you will be billed. You may need an application under RMA (which could involve a hearing at your expense) at either or both the Local or Regional Council. Good Luck. If you succeed I could be in the market.

    Problems

Sounds like swim bladder problems---very hard to fix.
  7. I think you are more optimistic than me. Where did you get that info from?

    Problems

Does it swim in a circle?
  9. You also need an ante room that you enter and change into your overalls, gumboots and gloves before you enter the quarantine room.
  10. Unless things have changed since I imported fish you will need to sterilize water with 50ppm Chlorine and that will probably kill off the septic tank and if that doesn't the antibiotics you use to treat any diseases probably will. If you you put the water from your tanks through the septic tank it will be completely overloaded and will fail. Not a good Idea.
  11. It is pretty small but you could use that as a shelter and build a decent flight to it.
  12. I used to have nine avieries which I built and after making a few mistakes concluded that the best netting is the 1/4 inch sq Made in China stuff because it keeps out mice and keeps in baby Chinese quail. As advised they need to be vermin proof or they are a total disaster. I have only ever kept hook beaks and soft bills seperately. Even quail get a hard time with hook beaks often (particularly love birds)
  13. Fundulopanchax tailbita
  14. Is that a guilty look on the faces of the fish in the foreground. I have some very similar after throwing a number of guppies in the same tank including tuxedo and snakeskin--a bit of both.
  15. I am going but I may stay a bit longer. How will you keep the fish during the conference?
  16. PVC solvent glue is used on water supply pipes in plumbing so it cannot be poisonous when dry.
  17. The place I told you but it sounds like Oderings may have something similar.
  18. Most plants don't like formalin
  19. If you you have a tank like one of mine that was built with six compartments there will be less clearence between the glass than if the partition was added as an after thought.
  20. On the left we have--- and on the right we have---. You pays ya money and takes ya pick.
  21. The proportions are all wrong. A tall tank which will need a lot of light and no room for lights. Would make a good terrarium
  22. I have a planted tank at 22-23 deg with killies Sae and clowns and they all are happy. Still have snails but not many. They wont eat snails if you feed them too well on everything else.
  23. Standing water overnight only gets rid of some of the chlorine and will push the equation towards the monochloramine if all the chlorine dissipates.
  24. It is vodka when it is done. You could try wine yeast and nutrient salts from your local home brew shop and it will probably last longer.
  25. Turtle sticks have been formulated for turtles and generally contain additives that they need. Don't feed bread, cat food or other junk like some do. I feed oxygen weed (Elodea canadensis) which you can buy from the pet shop at great expense or hook out of the river for free. Baby turtles are carnivors and will only eat plant later on.
