aotealotl
hello, the clerk in the local pet shop told me that keeping Blue Tongue Skink in 'captivity' north of Bombay Hills is prohibited by DOC because if they can escape they would be able to breed in the free. is this the case or just another fairy tale ? aotealotl
it is a local council by-law in the Auckland district thanks, that means further up north it is legal again ?
alanmin4304
Restrictions can be put in place by Maf or any Regional council. In the case of north of the Bombay hills and blue tounges the restriction is imposed by the Auckland Regional Council and will cover the area that the ARC covers. I don't know if it applies to other regions as well. The main reason for the restrictions is that they have live young so do no have to have viable conditions to incubate eggs. repto
i think this almost qualifies as an `urban myth`?? What ever you want to call it .how about an unenforceable piece of clap trap? there are heaps of bluetongues in and around auckland and there will continue to be. Sheepsnana
Maybe they're trying to keep a cap on it? :dunno:
alanmin4304
The theory is that you can't breed them, sell them or bring them in or out of the area but you can keep them until they die of old age. The word that comes to mind is bollocks. In case you are worried it is a very old slang word for a priest.
F15hguy
please remember that we are not allowed pirahna's due to the threat of them escaping into the wild
aotealotl
or bring them in or out of the area did anyone ever get stopped at a road block by MAF where they were looking for illegal reptiles ? :spop: never mind the ... bollocks
alanmin4304
I guess it realy doesn't matter too much what we think. Trademe wll not advertise them and petbus will not carry them. I am waiting for them to ban domestic cats that are let out to roam and kill our native lizards and birds.
aotealotl
I am waiting for them to ban domestic cats that are let out to roam and kill our native lizards and birds. I totally agree, I have two dogs, I live rural far away from the city and my dogs will never come even close to town and I have to pay for microchips and dog registration fees (just to pay for all the mangrol dogs in town roaming free and have to get caught) and all the cats are free FOR FREE killing everything native and everyone seems to be fine with it... ...any cat roaming free does more harm to our fauna than any escaped lizard, skink or dart frog (or White's Tree for that matter) just saying
alanmin4304
You might as well get used to it. The cat lobby is far stronger than the lizard lobby so controls on cats are politically unpopular. People seem to accept controls on dogs but not cats.

F15hguy
:rotf: nice, there is a huge problem with them out there, problem with cats is they kill for fun, dogs normally kill then eat (unless the animals too large) they even have problems with cats killing roos
Zev
I am sure there are a lot of farmers out there who would dispute that dogs kill only to eat. ExotherMan
I had a chat with Jack Craw (ARC) a few weeks ago during a discussion about the current RPMS. Interestingly when I questioned him about the Blue-tongues 'special treatment' in the strategy he responded telling me that they are not restricted and that they are only considered a pest when not in containment just like the other reptiles. :-? Good to know they know what they are doing... protecting us from all those nasty Salmonella spreading reptiles

reptilez
What is the status on this now? Numerous listings of Blue tongues are on trade me. Most of them are located in Auckland. This whole by-law confuses me. What can they do if they catch you with a blue tongue in Auckland?

alanmin4304
It is a requirement of the Auckland Regional Council not the Local Council.
