zeebee
Hi guys, So i'm thinking about making polystyrene rocks similar to how backgrounds are made, (carving it into shape, plastering with cement then sealing) Has anyone done this before? Any tips to get them to sink? I'm thinking about putting a rock in the middle to weigh it down.. any suggestions?
spoon
one the cement has set melt most of the polystyrene out , you will need a reasonable layer of cement to do this though
zeebee
That's a good idea, how would I melt it out?
spoon
could use a solvent perhaps but its probably safer and more easily controlled to use a heat gun or hair dryer
oO SKIPPY Oo
heat guns work a treat on high but make sure you do it outside as the poly stinks when it melts
zeebee
Thanks for the tips I would prefer real rocks but have no idea where to find them lol.
Hamstar99
We use petrol to melt out he Poly
zeebee
Ooooh thats a good easy idea, petrols expensive though, every drop is like gold :slfg: Me+filling car up, lifting hose up to get every little bit haha :sml1:

spoon
what kind of rocks exactly are you after? as it will probably be cheaper to use real rocks even if you pay for them also less time consuming
zeebee
Rough sort of cliff looking rocks lol, you wouldn't have thought rocks would be so hard to describe... :-?
si_sphinx
haha I am going to start lifting the hose aswell, GREAT IDEA! :slfg: Lifting the hose doesn't do anything. the fuel shuts off at the nozzle, not the pump. and the hose is always completely full of fuel so you can only shake the nozzle to get the last few drops in the end of it. Fake rocks are good if you have problems with the weight of real rocks. If not then real ones are best IMO. petrol is the best to melt poly, just make sure you clean it well after. Ira
I suggest putting a real rock in the middle. Iwonder how well a good squirt of superglue would melt the polystyrene? Any that's ever melted a massive hole in their brand new foamy RC plane when they used regular superglue will have experience with this. F15hguy
haha I am going to start lifting the hose aswell, GREAT IDEA! :slfg: had a mate at a petrol station fill a 5Ltr container every day by lifting the hose after ppl had left, surprising the difference it makes <=== Tightass
#!CrunchBang
haha I am going to start lifting the hose aswell, GREAT IDEA! :slfg: :smot: But you have a valve in the handle, you get nothing extra out of the hose, but do get a laugh out of me.
