zeebee
Hi there, Does anyone have any tips in increasing oxygen levels in a tall tank? I have heard adding a power-head will help, as creates more surface agitation. Whats a good brand/model?
Squirt
If its a tall tank I would think about adding an air stone to the bottom But I'm general eheim is a good brand
zeebee
Thanks So air stones actually work at dissolving oxygen into the water? I thought they were for decoration
Squirt
If you hook it up to an air pump yeah they expose the water to air and help dissolve oxygen
zeebee
Cool thanks So anyone got a power-head they want to sell??
alanmin4304
An airstone will agitate the surface and create more surface area just like a power head or anything else that increases the surface area.
Ira
Thanks So air stones actually work at dissolving oxygen into the water? I thought they were for decoration  A small amount of aeration from the bubbles, but the vast majority due to circulating water from the bottom of the tank up to the top and disturbing the surface. Air pumps generally use less power and cause less water current for the fish than powerheads.

GrahamC
So, if you want to increase the dissolved O2, and prevent loss of CO2, which is better? I have read that air stones remove too much CO2, but can't see why the same doesn't happen with just surface agitation.
alanmin4304
My understanding is that water has a greater affinity for O2 over CO2. This is born out by the fact that aeration will drive off CO2 which increases the pH and oxidises iron and manganese to a less soluble form that can be settled out of a water supply when it is a problem. henward
if you hae a canister, just lift the outlet so it isnt submerged, this is plenty. unless your tank is heavily stocked, you dont need that muc aeration but in saying that, it can only be good to have heaps of oxygen! air stone with a pump is good, you cant really beat that when it comes to aerating. but if you have a sump system and over flow, that is plenty of oxygen, more than enough that is required. Are you sure about this, Ira? I'd have thought the surface area of all those bubbles would exceed the area of the water's surface? :dunno:

Joshlikesfish
Stick an airstone under a power head.

They're inanimate objects. :an!gry Only people, or sometimes machines, can paint anything. Well, and sometimes apes and elephants.
