there's an apisto at HFF that I was looking at, wondering if I should ignore your advice about the filter .........

in other news, have started putting together my new tank. My husband decided to build me a tank stand after all so I will have all wooden ones. While I'm waiting for that to be finished I have the water in the tank and will start cycling it tomorrow.

Yes Sam, I have taken some progress pics.

Tell me about it :nilly:

I made myself a table with columns for the 5 tanks, and the different fish I would like or already have, filling in the rows. By the time I had finished I was more confused and undecided than when I started. I guess tomorrow I will know whether or not I will give clown killies a go, or if I will stick with what's on my list.

The new tank is reasonably easy, because it's got good current and a sucky filter I need big-little fish rather than minifish. The dilemma is what to put in the other breeding tank and the CPD and loach tank once I've finished rearranging :nilly:

Just remove the filter! In my experience internal filters suck anyway (and I mean suck as in preformance compared to canisters, ease of maintainance, and they also suck up little fish). And they also take up room in your tank.

An Eheim Classic 2213 with hoses, double taps and Eheim filter media only costs $180.00 and will last for a very long time and you can easily put a sponge on the inlet to stop small fish getting sucked up. But the flow isn't that strong anyway. I have one on the tank with my Licorice Gouramis and they don't have problems with it and they are very tiny!

Why not get a Sun Sun HW-302 for $88 + shipping? It has a bigger capacity and higher flow. Spend the extra money on lily pipes 8)

What sort if media does the SunSun come with? Remember that with the Eheim filter you are also paying for really good quality filter media and accessories like the double taps (which are extremely helpful). IMO good quality media > capacity :P

Also higher flow isn't necessarily better, because Sophia wants to keep small fish and they don't like too much flow

Wait why do you need double taps? :-? Whatever media you want to put in it, stock it with Eheim media if you like. I feel that enough of the beneficial bacteria exists in the substrate so the canister filter's job is more mechanical. I just load mine with standard ceramic rings and more recently pumice. I don't know if flow is the right word, you can have high turn over with little current if you set it up correctly. That's my plan on my AA project anyways, high turn over but not a tornado in the tank.
