blueether
Sad about the fish loss &c:ry. Ammonia spike? Let me help to convince you to stay with the rasbora:
Sophia
haha :sml2: ... I could get some cold water corydora and some hillstream loaches... hmmmm I found a 6th rasbora this evening and a dead one with bites out of it.... I think I know who the culprits are now
Hecticity
Hey Sophia I recently added to my group of mosquito rasbora, and noticed a variation in a couple that resembles the photo of your one. I'm guessing there must be some batch contamination as these ones seem to resemble Boraras merah, not Boraras brigittae. Nice fish still! I seem to have 2 out of about 19. Sophia
I think I have 3 maculatus and 3 brigittae left.
SamH
Have you been running CO2 on this tank Sophia?
Sophia
nope
SamH
That's where the algae is coming from then.
Sophia
since I got 2 otos it hasn't been an algae problem  today I made a change in here, I moved the rasbora next door into the mini fish tank with the CPDs. Next I continue to ruminate over what to do next :smln:
F15hguy
oto's are even more fun in groups, my group adopted a baby siamese algae eater and used to follow it round, the largest oto kept herding it back to the school even when it was 3 times their size, stupid and cute, gotta luv em
Sophia
I'm thinking of getting some corydora and a couple more otos. I had pygmy corydora in here originally but they were very shy, now I think to get some bigger ones like peppered cories.
F15hguy
go for the smallest of the larger species as the larger ones tend to be a bit clumsy around plants and knock them out/cut them off, i've always found the dwarf species to be a bit shy unless you have 20 or so
SamH
since I got 2 otos it hasn't been an algae problem  Treating the symptoms, not the cause. It'll improve plant growth too, you need to balance light, CO2 and ferts.
Sophia
Thanks but I don't do C02, end of story, I'm a low tech tank person. Algae eaters are fine with me while they are doing their job.

Sophia
Today's update... Since moving house in July and settling in to a well lit room, the plants became covered in a brown slimey algae that the 2 otos I added couldn't clean up. After putting the photo period down to 3 hours from 6 it still didn't work so I tried a 3 day blackout. No lights, no food, tank covered in a sheet. After the 3rd day I wiped the algae off the leaves, did a third of a tank water change, and put the lights back up to 6 hours a day. Since the last update I've removed the spindly twisted val, watched the balansae crypt revive, and added some new huge leafed crypts around the edges. There are supposed to be 3 oto in here but could only find 1 at last count. There are still 5 loaches and 3 corydora. Before the blackout shots After the blackout shots

James125
Ive had this problem before, i found that the tank was getting far to much sun coming in through the windows, i moved the tank into a more shaded spot, havnt had a prob since
Sophia
this tank is now empty, all occupants moved to riverbed tank. Have put a piece of paper at the sunny end to block light and am doing a 3 day black out on the algae before I start thinking about who to put in here next and whether I should rearrange in any way. Joe
You could turn it into a blackwater tank with some Licorice Gouramis and Emerald Eye Rasboras or Mosquito Rasboras
Sophia
There is 1 licorice gourami left at HFF. In your investigations are licorice gouramis available for a while or was this batch a one off? At the end of the week I'm hoping HFF will have been able to get some mosquitoes in, and I will get about 10, which would make 14 total. Since they like the twisted val so much I thought I'd keep them in the CPD tank and either let the CPDs and erythromicrons continue to die off slowly (another is wasting), or sell the danios and just keep the mosquitos in there and see if they decide to breed. OR I'd move the CPDs and erythromicrons into this tank with a bottom dweller such as a pair of rams.
