I have used a similar product and its realy good i was a bit weary about it to begin with but its realy good and cheap to run i have a blue one and a white one. if i could upload photos and take a decent photo id post what it looks like. $12 just try it out

speaking about leds. Have anyone used led grow light? What's the difference between grow and normal?

can you get led grow light? or is it just leds?

Only difference would be color frequency. If you can find exact model numbers or anything of the leds you should be able to find out the color spectrum, leds tend to be a bit monochromatic though.

Yes, there is such a thing led grow light, for hydroponics. I've seen it on fish mag as well but I recond the one for hydroponics may be cheaper and much more effective. Lets do some research into them, info thru nett or check them out at hydroponics store if they carry them. It'd be cheap to run, could be expensive if buy ready made but should be dirt cheap if we can DIY. :)

how many lumens are these things?

i had a brief chat to a mate who owns an electrical supply store & he came to the conclusion that 5 or 6 rows (cannot recall exactely) of LEDs were required to match one fluro tube which made it really expensive, ie: a five foot fluro tube = 25 or 30 feet of LEDs to achieve the same lumens.

Sounds about right. Not much higher lumens/watt+much lower wattage=much lower lumens.

I must point out that it really depends on what LEDs you use, high-watt LEDs are generally high-lumen but they are also generally more expensive.

If you're just using them for lighting fish then it doesn't really matter what watt/lumen they are just as long as you can see the fish ;)

A LED strip for plants(6,500K) was $120 USD or something in that range, the guy selling them told me I would need two for my 60cm x 30cm and 3 if I wanted to grow high-lite plants(glosso etc). LEDs are more beneficial in marine setups due to the lower heat output and matched efficiency of MH lamps, along with the much coveted 'shimmer' effect.

It's also effective for smaller or odd sized tanks imo. I really don't like how fluro tubes add constraints to your tank lengths. All the lighting comes in set 'foot', sizes and it's a pain trying to get high wattage lights for nano tanks. Sure, LEDs may have lower lumen per watt, but imo that's not the only thing you should be looking at. With metal halides or fluros you get light across the whole spectrum, even if the light peaks at the right wavelengths, the peaks are not as sharp as in LEDs, so even with higher lumen per watt, it does not necessarily mean you're getting more usable light. It can also hard to tell where these peaks are, as many tubes only give a kevin rating. While from what I know, the good thing about LEDs is that red green and blue LEDs are all separate, white LEDs, are done by combining the 3 colours together to get white. This is good because it means that it's usually very easy to find out the wavelengths of the separate LEDs so you will know exactly at what wavelength the bulbs peak at.

I really want to do a LED setup, but as I am absolutely dismal at DIY, and all my family is overseas so no one can help, I'll just stick with the eazy 'plop this over the tank. Done' system. I do hope to have a LED lighting setup one day though.
