Awesome tank!

Hey everyone, I'm planning a 60cm half cube planted tank with a 10cm back partition to hide all the equipment. It will be 60cmLx60cmWx30cmH 10cm of the back will be sectioned off by a piece of glass where I'll put all the hardware. The overflow will be in the middle. On the right I'll put the out/in for a cannister filter - the return pipe would fit through a hole in the glass and enter the aquarium directly. On the left I'd keep the heater and a separate pump to get some extra flow in there. I wanted to get some feedback on what you guys think about this type of setup? Particularly the back section - is there anything I've missed? Here is a pic in case my explanation sucks:

Hey everyone, I was kind of active a few years ago; although I mostly lurked. I quit because of Uni and now that I've finished I decided to get back into the hobby. The plan is to start a small/med planted tank that requires minimal upkeep. I wanted to go for a marine nano, but at this point it's going to be too expensive so I've decided to put it off for 6-12 months. So thats pretty much it, I have some ideas for the new tank so you'll see me posting in the forums

www.aquastyleonline.com have some good cheap kits. If you want something more high end then Rapid LED is where you can get a really nice kit. There is also a very good thread on nano-reef.com about these kits in particular and tons of other info about LEDs in small aquariums But tbh you don't need anything more than a CFL to grow just about anything in that tank, something along the lines of 6W should do it

Yes you can use clay-only kitty litter with no smell added. But when daltons aquatic mix is so cheap why would you? Kitty litter is not going to be much better than it(if at all) and will probably cost more

No, its only 3.5W. If you want to go LED then its best to do it DIY - check out aquastyleonline.com for some cheap kits The other options are a 150W MH or some T5's

Its a very fine line between tax evasion (illegal) and tax avoidance (legal). Basically you need to have the intent to pay taxes, you're just reducing the amount

RO water is perfectly pH 7.0, if you mix it with your normal water it will only go up, which as you said isn't the best for discus etc. Im not sure what 'good' minerals you're talking about, unless you want to keep plants RO water should be fine I think.

Colombian tetras would work well as a replacement for the silver dollars. And you could get a moonlight gourami instead of the silver shark. Another fish that is blue is the electric blue german rams, which could replace the fighter. So a possible stock list is: Cochu Blue Tetra - 20+ Colombian tetras - 9 Moonlight Gourami - 4 Electric Blue Ram - 2/4 Bristlenose - 1 to keep the tank clean The tank will have to be 3ft, preferably 4ft and have a canister filter. You're unlikely to find any of these fish being bred, apart from maybe the rams, so either keep an eye on Trademe or buy them slowly from a fish shop

Depends on your tank. Is it fish-only or planted or saltwater?

River/sea sand would tend to be less sharp because its been ground up over a long time so the edges should be smooth. What you want to avoid is man-made sand which is usually done by smashing rocks into sand which results in sharp edges. Anything else of a fine enough grain size will be fine.

I think you're meant to put sponge or bio balls inside the PVC to trap the CO2 bubbles until they naturally absorb into the water. Maybe if you can have a diffuser connected inside the tube that would help with the CO2 dispersion

Should be fine as long as you keep it at 28C and not much higher and not much lower I know people have kept L66, L002 and the butterfly plecs that are around with Discus. Possibly the Choc Zebra but I can't quite remember now.

Ive used the cheap chinese one, which can be imported. The bottles were kind of a pain and I ended up upgrading to a proper CO2 setup after about 6 months - the 3 bottles lasted me about that much on a 90L tank. Turning it off at night was what really annoyed me because its difficult to get the bubble count just right, on the chinese one anyway

Anything made from Polypropylene is also fine - look for the PP or the recycling symbol with a number 5 in it. In fact I think numbers 1-5 are all fine for fish. Check out this article on wikipedia for a nifty table http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recycling_codes But, just to be safe, fill up the container as you would and add some fish you don't mind losing. I did this for my big water change tub with a couple of tetras and they were fine so I went ahead and used it.

You can also collect rain water for peace of mind. Or a more expensive option is investing in an RO/DI unit? Not cheap but will take out 99.99% of impurities.

Finally got around to trying something tonight (first few weeks of uni = no time). The leave out of water thing worked very well. Two hours later and he finally gave up :happy1: Thanks for all the help!
